WELCOME TO THE SOUTH DAKOTA PRAIRIE, THE HOMELANDS OF THE LAKOTA!

ENJOY A BUFFALO ROAD VACATION ON THE LEGENDARY FARLEE RANCH IN THE HEART OF
LAKOTA COUNTRY.

FARLEE RANCH

TRAVEL THE BUFFALO ROAD TO FARLEE RANCH

Far away from the hustle and noise of the city, on the Cheyenne River Sioux
Reservation in the center of South Dakota, the Farlee Ranch is a Native
American-owned and operated buffalo and cattle ranch. The Farlee Family history
in the area can be traced back to the days of the Battle of Little Big Horn.
Running through Farlee Ranch, is a centuries-old trail known as the Buffalo
Trail, which was originally forged by Native Americans as they followed wild
game herds and later traveled by fur trappers and frontiersman as they followed
their dreams. The trail crosses the Cheyenne River, known by the Lakota as the
Wakpá Wašté or Good River, on the south side of the Farlee Ranch, which is also
the southern border of the Reservation. In the mid-1800’s Lakota tribal members
living on the west side of the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation journeyed down
the Buffalo Trail to receive their monthly government rations.

THE PRAIRIE

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE WIDE OPEN

During your Buffalo Road vacation, you’ll be immersed in the beauty of the
sprawling South Dakota prairie. As part of our Prairie Safari, you’ll spend a
day in the peaceful, wide-open spaces within the land of the Lakota. You’ll have
the opportunity to observe native fauna of the prairie ecosystem, including
fragrant sagebrush and swaying sweetgrass. The day will be spent among the
Farlee Ranch’s magnificent buffalo herd and other wildlife. A bald eagle
(wambli) may fly overhead, or the elusive coyote (sungmanitu) may cross your
path.

Native Americans. During your stay, you’ll experience the cultural and spiritual
connection between Mother Earth (Maka Unci), her children, the two-legged Lakota
people (oyate), the four-legged animals, and the winged and finned animals,
which is deeply rooted in the Lakota way of life. Beyond the Farlee Ranch, we
offer tours of cultural attractions, such as Bear Butte (Mato Paha), the Black
Hills (Paha Sapa), Crazy Horse Mountain (Sunk Witko), and the Badlands (Makoce
