The prosecutor of the International Criminal Court requested arrest warrants
Monday against five top-ranking Israeli and Hamas leaders, including Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leader Yehiya Sinwar, on charges of
war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The ultimate decision on whether to grant any of the warrants rests with judges
in the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber.

Senior Israeli officials quickly hit back at the court. Israeli war cabinet
minister Benny Gantz said Israel is “waging one of the just wars” of history and
called drawing parallels between Hamas and Israel “a deep distortion of
justice.” Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid called it a “diplomatic disaster”
and said the comparison between leaders of Hamas and Israel is “unforgivable.”

Hamas denounced the court’s attempts “to equate the victim with the
executioner.”
