WHAT WE DO

SUPPORTED LIVING

We provide support for people to maintain their own tenancies (liaising with
private and social landlords), and manage themselves, their finances, and their
health, focusing on living principles.

A homely environment which is conducive to supporting young people to develop
and maintain daily living skills. All activities of daily living are tailored to
meet every young person's learning style and are built around learning in action
with very clear, tangible, outcomes. We can support people to cook family
recipes as well as explore their own culinary ambitions.

INDEPENDENT LIVING

Supporting people to maintain the place they call home

HEALTH

Supporting people to remain their health and wellbeing

BESPOKE FUTURES

This is not your average respite service whilst the need for a break away from
family and caring duties plays a very important role in maintaining a stable
home environment, this service provides an environment to learn, grow and
transfer skills into daily life.

Transition to adulthood is a journey built up through many stages and layers
each with it's own set of jumps and hurdles and with this in mind, our staff
team come with a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience to support young
people and their significant persons to navigate through the journey to leading
a purposeful, adult, life.

MEET THE TEAM

Phoenix Bespoke Support services evolved out of the experience of working in
care provisions to create client-centred provisions which families and clients
love.

Phoenix rose from the ashes as a service based upon Paul’s previous experience
managing provision of care for people with challenging behaviours in the South
East of England. (Challenging needs services for the NHS).

Paul has an intimate knowledge and understanding of all the services which
Phoenix runs as he set them up based upon years of experience in the caring
professions.

PAUL BECKER

He began his career at the Indiana Resource Centre for Autism. Following a move
to the UK he worked in the NHS for 15 years managing the challenging needs
service within a psychology team.  He has subsequently worked in the private
sector which culminated in the forming of Phoenix Bespoke Support in 2010.

Starting as a production assistant in Radio Drama I moved to work for World
Service English where I remained for 17 years. The highlight of my time in the
BBC was working on a project over 4 years, developing and implementing a digital
scheduling and broadcast system Following some years working in community and
arts development as the Community Grant Manager for Central Manchester
Development Corporation.

GLENICE LAKE

looks like. I was part of the inspection teams for Mental Health Hospitals,

I am a mother of 3 young men all of whom are autistic. 2 have a learning
disability and behaviour that could be seen as challenging and one was assessed
as gifted and talented and was assessed as being within the top 5%
intellectually in the UK.  In a previous life I was a senior manager in a Local
Authority until my caring responsibilities made it not possible to continue. I
have set up parent/carer groups, been a governor at my son’s local schools and
colleges. My goal is that young people have the right to live as independently
as they can with the right support at the right time.

Lifeshare
I started my career in what was called a lifeshare where I lived with and
supported a lady with Autism, Learning Disabilities and severe Epilepsy. We did
exactly what the title implied and shared our lives including our families. We
maintained professional boundaries but this was a truly remarkable experience
and we had a wonderful 3 years together. We both lived our best lives.

I then went on to work for a local authority at the start of an in-house respite
provision to support clients with Learning Disabilities and a number of
associated diagnoses. This service was for people aged 18-65 and operated two
support phases one was for people with moderate support needs and the other was
for people with more complex needs who were considered ‘high support’. As part
of my role, I was responsible for carrying out residential assessments,
completing support plans and delivering direct support to clients in order to
develop their independence skills.

Day Service
After 5 wholesome years, I went on to work in a local authority day centre for
adults with Learning Disabilities as a peripatetic day centre officer and worked
across the service which supported 120 clients. There was never a dull day for
me or the clients as we built up very special support relationships including
their family networks. Clients were actively supported to access the community
including Colleges and employment opportunities as well as nurturing personal
interests and doing fun activities. As you can imagine, there was a vast array
of differing needs and I worked particularly well with people who had the
potential to present challenges to self and others. This work was particularly
rewarding as my training and emotional intelligence enabled me to drastically
minimise levels of challenge from individuals which helped to broaden their
horizons and remove labels which would have ordinarily restricted their choices
and activities. It was within this role that I spent 8 years supporting adults
to work for and gain their NPTC in amenity horticulture and I could see first
hand how therapeutic gardening was for emotional and physical wellbeing. So much
so, I have had my own allotment plot for 13 years now.

Social Worker
It was in my seventh year that I was put forward to undertake an
employment-based Social Work Degree which I successfully completed over 3 years
whilst working. It was a sad day for myself and clients when I left to embark on
my career in Social Work, it was a natural progression and my colleagues
reminded me that I was needed as a Social Worker due to the fact that I could be
an active advocate for our clients and also have an in-depth understanding of
social care service delivery and support. Supporting carers by offering carers
assessments and working collaboratively to find solutions to everyday
challenges.

My career in Social Work is firmly nestled in Transitions for people with
Learning Disabilities and whilst this was a very challenging area, it was very
rewarding. I supported young people aged 17-25 to participate in their
assessment and subsequent support planning. I have a strong command of Social
Work and Education legislation in order to carry out my role effectively. After
2 years I was successful in becoming a senior practitioner and it was another 2
years before I became an advanced Social Worker with supervisory
responsibilities.

Practice Educator
I also completed my Practice Educator Training and have been instrumental in
teaching Social Work students. I was a finalist for the category of Practice
Educator of the Year in the  National Social Worker of the Year awards in 2018
and I believe that this is due to my passion for supporting the Social Workforce
of the future.

Social Work Team Manager
It was also in 2017 that I became a team manager and continued in this role for
5 happy years.

I used all of my knowledge and experience to support a team of transition Social
Workers to assist young people and their families in navigating the
ever-changing world of growing up with a disability. This included understanding
the legal framework in transferring from children's to adult services, and
supporting young people to achieve developmental milestones using funded and
community resources to reach good outcomes. As a manager, I was responsible for
leading and nurturing as well as supporting the Local Authority in commissioning
services.

Safeguarding adults and children is a central component to everything that I do
and I was a competent chair of case conferences who supported others to identify
risks whilst balancing rights and choices to make unwise decisions.

Social Care Consultant
I always intended to not stop at Social Work and went on to work as an
independent management consultant supporting small organisations to troubleshoot
and improve their services.  I come with a wealth of knowledge and experience
from both a provider and Social Work perspective and it is this that drives me
and enables me to deliver the best possible outcomes for our clients.

"GLAD TO BE HERE"

"I’ve been supported by Phoenix for 5 years now.  I like that they don’t use
agency staff. The staff and clients are nice and friendly. I like going out with
my friends from Phoenix. I do things like swimming, gym, pub, clubs and art. I
do my own housework with support, even though it’s not my favourite thing to
do.  Staff support me to cook the foods I like - stir fries and curries. This
helps me to learn new skills, save money, lose weight and it tastes nicer.  I
wouldn’t change my provider because they understand me."

AND FROM THE FAMILIES…

"HE HAS ACHIEVED MORE THAN WE COULD HAVE ALL DREAMT OF"

"At a crossroads in our son's life, his transition from teenager/Adulthood
seemed scary. He really needed a supported living placement giving him the
independence that he wanted and we needed.  When we met with Phoenix they seemed
to ‘just get it’ and certainly had the expertise and knowledge when it came to
what our son's needs were and how they could help him achieve the lifestyle he
wanted.  They have helped our son turn his life around and he enjoys his
supported living placement with a skilled team of support workers to encourage
and assist with his independent living skills. He has achieved more than we
could have all dreamt of. Thank you!"
B.G

"I CAN SLEEP AT NIGHT KNOWING THEY ARE WELL SUPPORTED"

"My sons are encouraged to live the absolute best lives. I can sleep at night
knowing they are well supported – they choose who supports them, and any issues
are resolved speedily with the utmost care and compassion. I often visit and
they are out and about. I have often been given a bag and shown the door by my
sons if they think I’m preventing them from doing something."
G.L

"WE ARE VERY HAPPY WITH THE CARE AND SUPPORT PROVIDED BY PHOENIX"

"The correspondence is excellent, and any issues that may arise are dealt with
quickly and efficiently. The care for my daughter is paramount, I have no
concerns whatsoever that Phoenix is not providing a good service to keep her
safe and well looked after."
