For those efforts and more, UL Lafayette is one of 11 universities to earn the 2016 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools Postsecondary Sustainability Award. KEEP UL LAFAYETTE BEAUTIFUL As a Keep Louisiana Beautiful University Affiliate, we are committed to continuous improvement in addressing sustainability and environmental issues, promoting student environmental stewardship and engagement, and rigorously measuring outcomes. Learn more ZERO WASTE We're committed to not just recycling, but reducing our waste overall. Our Zero Waste initiative includes efforts to reduce food waste, recycle electronics and office supplies on campus, install bottle-refilling water fountains, and increase recycling from tailgating with the national Gameday Challenge. Zero Waste also includes our overall recycling program, Geaux R.E.D., which spans across campus. LEADERS IN SUSTAINABILITY At the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, we're leaders in sustainability. Our new Student Union is the first major building in Lafayette recognized for environmental sustainability by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program. Being LEED-certified means that we met high standards in construction, recycling, and efficient energy usage. Learn More SUSTAINABILITY RESEARCH As a university, we're committed to research for a reason—which includes finding alternative fuels, studying the effects of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, and designing and building green homes. Find out more about our efforts to promote sustainable practices through our academics and research. Learn More 12345 FÊTE DE LA TERRE Fête de la Terre is a week-long celebration of the Earth! Fête de la Terre takes place Monday through Friday around the week in April that contains Earth Day, April 22nd. It's a week filled with film screenings, lectures, and events, all culminating with our biggest event of the year - the Fête de la Terre Expo for organizations, businesses, and non-profits who are committed to a more sustainable Acadiana and Louisiana. See a video here. See more about this year's event here: Fête de la Terre ➝ ZERO WASTE At the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, we are taking a stand against waste. A Zero Waste philosophy is not just about recycling, it is about reducing our waste stream altogether. We have many programs on campus that help us achieve this goal. These programs include Geaux R.E.D., E-Cycle, Good to Geaux - Ozzi Program, Plastic Bag and Film Recycling, One Less Bottle, Gameday Challenge, Goodwill Not Landfill, and Food Recovery Network. LANDSCAPE As good stewards of out environment, we have many initiatives that involve caring for our landscape. Some of our low impact design strategies include constructing rain gardens and bioswales on campus to help mitigate stormwater runoff. Our first bioswale has been planted adjacent to Wharton Hall! We have constructed rain gardens with Soul Camp volunteers. We have also parterned with Backyard Sapphire to provide recycled glass mulch to our landscaping. Food waste produced at home football games are brought to UL Lafayette's Cade Farm to be composted and turned into mulch, which is then used at new planting locations around campus. Our University has been recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree Campus USA university every year since 2008 and by the Xerces Society as a Bee Campus USA university since 2022. We also work with Bob's Tree Preservation on the Acorns of Hope, a non-profit initiative that aims to begin the reforestation of the quickly eroding coastline of South Louisiana. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Getting involved in on and off campus service projects is an important part of achieving campus sustainability. Our goal is to lead the discussions and initiatives that will increase awareness and inspire positive, active involvement from the entire University community and Acadiana region. Special service projects include: * S.O.U.L. Camp (Service, Outreach, Unity, and Leadership) Day of Service * The Big Event * UNIV100 class special projects Service based student organizations include: * AmeriCorps * Students for Sustainability * BioSociety * Beacon Club * Blue Key National Honors Society * Circle K International * Omega Phi Alpha If you would like to get involved in a service organization or project, find more information on the Office of Community Service website! FIND US ON FACEBOOK SUSTAINABILITY IS IN OUR ROOTS. At the turn of the 20th century, the first president of the University, Dr. Edwin Lewis Stephens, hand-planted live oaks on campus. Now known as the Century Oaks, these majestic trees symbolize UL Lafayette’s strength and stability. Our University’s values are deeply rooted in the Cajun and Creole cultures of our Acadiana region. These values strongly connect us to our environment and communities, and influence our inclination toward collaboration to solve problems. We value the right of each person to have the resources he or she needs to live and thrive. At a time when resource and economic efficiency is more important than ever, we must all commit to do more, together. Our 2018-2021 Sustainability Strategic Plan sets out strategic, time constrained objectives that will guide the entire University community in continuing our steady progress toward achieving our sustainability goals. Faculty, staff, students, and administrators worked together to incorporate principles of sustainability and strategies for progress into all areas of our institution, including our operations, our mission of education and research, and engagement of our campus community. In working to achieve our goals, we will utilize our campus and region as a living laboratory to inform and inspire our students, faculty, staff and community to create positive, systemic changes for a sustainable future. This plan is holistic, ambitious, and essential to the sustainability of our institution and community. * SUSTAINABILITY BLOG * AMERICORPS 2023 WRAPPED Blair Begnaud -- Wed, 01/03/2024 - 8:37am WRITTEN BY BRIANNA OLALEKAN I am a part of UL Lafayette's AmeriCorps team whoes sites are with the Office of Sustainability.
