In partnership with the Durham County Sheriff’s Office, Durham Tech
celebrated its 72nd Basic Detention Officer Certification Training Academy.

This class is particularly special, though, because they were an inaugural

Officer Certification Course with probationary detention officers (referred
to as Basic Detention Officer Training by the Sheriff’s Office).

The hybrid arrangement is the first of its kind in the state. Durham Tech is

As Suicide Prevention Month comes to a close, we reflect on the harsh reality
that in colleges and universities in the U.S., suicide is one of the most
common causes of death among students. It is because of that reality that we
work to develop meaningful and impactful partnerships within the community.

We were thrilled when Durham County Department of Public Health gave us an
incredible opportunity to deliver a suicide intervention program called
ASIST. LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is
the only workshop of its kind as it teaches participants to provide a skilled
intervention and develop a collaborative safety plan to keep someone safe and
   alive.

As a result of this partnership, we have trained multiple employees ranging
from Student Services and Instructors to Library staff and Human Resources
and Talent Management. Equipping our faculty and staff with this knowledge is
another way Durham Tech can support our students.

We are so grateful to have Durham County Department of Public Health as a
   community partner! #DoGreatThings
