NEF+ 2022 BOOTCAMP SURVEY

26 RESPONSES

AN ENTREPRENEURIAL FRIEND OF YOURS ASKS YOU,
"HOW WAS THE BOOTCAMP YOU DID ON THURSDAY AND FRIDAY?"

HOW WOULD YOU ANSWER THEM IN ONE SENTENCE?

25 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

It was human first, allowing the cohort to get to know each other with the
guidance of the NEF team and alumni founder speakers
It was fun meeting new like-minded people and learning what other people are
working on
We often underestimate the real value of being amongst like-minded problem
solvers.
It was a really engaging and informative session. I really felt like I got to
know everyone very quickly as well!
It was great to meet everyone and I am looking forward to the real learning to
start
It gave me a real sense of belonging and excitement
The boot camp gave me a fresh and refreshing perspective to business
It was informative and pretty interesting with insights on design thinking,
decision making, leadership management, financial management, critical thinking,
collaborative and friendly, very welcoming. Most importantly, the ability to
learn from and with others, in an interactive and unexpectedly remarkable manner
centered on play (gamification), education, discovery, on how startups can
leverage and harness mechanics to succeed.
insightful
It was so insightful and inspiring
It was interesting
Really useful and helpful but also very intense as there was a lot happening and
lots of big personalities.
Insightful and thought provoking
Amazingly informative and I am so pumped for the rest of the course.
High intensity entrepreneurship 101.
Energising and empowering.
[I only attended Thursday] It was really enjoyable. Topics and speakers were
varied. There was ample time to speak with my cohort and network.
Organised
I meet some inspirational people (speakers and students ) and came away with
some actions I can move forward. It was very much geared to start ups, but
hoping this will change as we move into the modules.
Inspirational and thought provoking, it really makes you want to do and be more.
Great - it really made me think about some things I hadn't before and it was
fantastic to meet lots of new people
Incredible - fantastic group of like-minded people (who are all hungry) and it
looks like a promising 6 month course.
I learnt a lot in just two days
I don't think my brain has ever been filled with so much information, knowledge,
advice, excitement. The speakers and experts were amazing, as are the cohort. I
feel so exhausted and so excited.
Full, engaging, it was both good and a bit overwhelming to meet people, but
really I can’t wait to dive into the content and learn from the different
challenges.

22 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

She got the room to be open, honest and vulnerable
There are topics that I am very passionate about and it's good to hear and learn
from Laura
Laura engaged us to dig deep within our own selves and definitions, whilst also
giving us permission to be safe spaces for eachother- despite many of us being
strangers to each other.
I thought Laura was great but the session felt quite long - although I don’t
know if this was because it was towards the end of the day!
She was great and engaging and great way to start the course.
I thought Laura was very engaging, and the content was very interesting and
thought-provoking.
Improvement in timing, everything else was good.
Laura's session gave me a new perspective on emotional intelligence which is a
Soft skill that is often overlooked
Laura was very knowledgeable, she was very personable and made everyone’s
opinions feel welcomed and appreciated.
She was engaging
I found the session on vulnerability really interesting however sometimes I felt
that the sessions lacked structure as it was often "any more thoughts on this?"
which led people to go off on a tangent and lose track of the conversation.
The method of resolving what was is a major blocker. The only thing that maybe
could be improved would be possibly outlining more of the expected results are
likely to be, but after everyone has had a go as not to deter there outcomes.
Having us open up early established a sense of trust amongst everyone. I thought
there could have been more time spent in the activating communication part to
help us become more familiar with each other's names. I would have also liked to
learn more practical tips on building resilience as it's so critical in our
entrepreneurial journey.
I thought Laura's session was really thought-provoking and allowed us to really
get into the 'tribe' mindset that I feel we'd need in the next few months
Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the Thursday.
Very engaging and spoke a lot of common sense
Laura was very responsive and attentive. She made you feel heard but also
challenged everyone's thought process which is critical in anyone's development.
I enjoyed it and found it useful, but it was the area of the 2 days that I have
spent most time thinking about in the past, so had less impact on me personally
She is clearly great at what she does, hence why she has helped NEF+ for so many
years. Interesting excercises which really helped with team building. I liked
the emphasis on everyone having a digital detox.
Because she was brilliant
Laura was one of the most amazing people I've ever met. I wish she was my coach!
For me, it was perfect.
I really appreciated the content Laura shared, but wished we could have engaged
with it in ways that explored our own limits and challenges rather than just
reflecting on it at large.

WHY DID YOU GIVE THIS RATING?

21 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

The instructions and expectations were clear
Philippa and Sarah both shared the value and definitions of coaching and
mentoring effectively.
Both were Clear and informative
I am looking forward to starting both the coaching and the mentoring
Both presentations were great. I think you could probably explain the difference
between mentoring and executive coaching more clearly. But otherwise it was
great.
They were clear and concise.
Understanding the difference between coaches and mentors are important
A more mature and old school way of relating their knowledge, didn’t quite
connect with the speakers but appreciated their knowledge.
Didn’t learn anything new
Really good insight in to Coaching and Mentoring and allowed me to manage my
expectations on what they are and what they are not. Both seemed very warm and
open to helping the participants.
It was very good, but seem unprepared
Yer, great, very informative about what to expect from a mentor
Overall they both did a great job of clarifying what is involved and the
distinctions between the two. Though I am already familiar with coaching and
what it entails. I think one point that could have been better clarified is what
a good fit looks like vs a suboptimal fit.
Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the Thursday.
Both gave us all the info needed at this point and both made me feel excited
about this as part of the course
Great to understand more about mentoring and what it would entail. The piece
about being there because you're stuck wasn't very motivating as I don't think
that's how everyone felt.
Content wise i think i got everything i needed. I think for the time it took, it
could have been more impactful, but it was good to meet them and understand what
would be happening.
Philippa was excellent at explaining the mentor process. I am looking forward to
starting that. However, I did find Sarah's slightly confusing but I am sure all
will be made clear when we start the coaching.
They both provided useful information
I enjoyed Phillipa's talk, but a few things Sarah said I found a bit
unprofessional/unempathetic - for example telling one of the cohort participants
that they don't look like the kind of person that would x/y/z. I would really
like to see Laura in this role/ someone similar.
Informative and helpful to know the structure. I think the conversation was
overtaken by what if the mentor is a bad match and maybe that should have been
explored more in a case by case scenario rather than take up as much space as it
did.

WHY DID YOU GIVE THIS RATING?

22 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

He got us to think about our wellbeing and personal identity beyond our business
aspirations
Very engaging
George embodied both grit and grace. He empowered us to prepare for the hard
road ahead, without neglecting the need to remind ourselves about who we are and
why we do what we do so that we can make room for ease.
Such a great presentation and it went so deep! Really made me think about a lot
of things
I loved how raw he was and how his past experiences are very involved in his
current business
I loved the vulnerability shown by George, and I found the content really
valuable.
He spent more time answering questions than on his slides, however it was a
great presentation and I learned a lot from him.
Gave me insight into another soft skill which I hadn't considered
N/A
He was great! His session was interactive and fun. He held my attention
throughout
George was really friendly, open and honest. I appreciated his vulnerability and
sharing his own personal experiences which made me feel more comfortable opening
up to the group. Also loved the design of his powerpoint!
Amazing!
Yes, very open and very genuine. Couldn't ask for more.
Thought it was great. Being vulnerable and presenting the content in simple
terms whilst adding in the humor made it a lot more relatable.
Really liked George's session. I think some questions were quite personal (some
cohort members didn't want to partake as a result, which is understandable) and
I think may be better suited in an afternoon slot, to help people open up more.
I think it's better suited prior to Laura's session, for example, as I think
both make for a good combination.
Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the Thursday.
Wow ... took me somewhere I never thought I would go on a professional course
A very deep thinker which helped me open up my own eyes about the way I think
and feel. I think taking a bit more charge of the room would have helped to
solidify the messaging and have people focus in.
George really made me think, and i enjoyed the context of what he was talking
about for us. I'm not sure if there will be a space for overall feedback, so
i'll say here, but this was the first of a few sessions that over ran, mainly
because of people asking questions that were about their own businesses. It
wasn't that these questions weren't valuable, just that it may be good to work
out how to give space for them without holding putting the rest of the session
off track.
Very open and honest presentation. Great advice and tips will be vital during
the course and beyond.
Absolutely incredible person and talk.
The heart of what George shared was good, but it was too much content and led to
a discussion of mostly people just reiterating the importance of each point
George shared. I think it would have been stronger with fewer points and process
questions that explored different viewpoints versus the same voices speaking up
again and again and assuming group think.

WHY DID YOU GIVE THIS RATING?

18 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

Very inspirational and some insights
Straight shooter, honest and direct. Exactly what we all needed.
Great presenter and his funding advice was particularly useful
It was amazing to see someone from the NEF program who has built such a massive
company
I found the whole story of Thriver fascinating, and Hamish's responses to the
questions were brilliant.
he gave practical and useful advice
Wasn’t present for the talk but heard lots of great things and eager to learn
more about him and his company.
I felt talked at. Wasn’t interactive enough
Great insight in to life running a business, the highs and lows and lessons
learnt along the way.
Super useful insights, and have taken the learnings into my own plan.
Was an inspirational talk. Would have liked to learn more about their early
days, how they built a complex business, testing their theories early on and
what kind of traction it took to secure that first funding round from seedcamp.
It was a really informative session. Hamish was structured without being too
rigid. I really enjoyed that this was at the end of the day and it really helped
set the tone for the programme.
Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the Thursday.
Very interesting, engaging and inspiring, but content was more geared to start
ups
Inspirational and down to earth. Was very honest about his journey and where he
is to date.
He was great to listen to, even from someone who doesn't have their own
business. Its a great story and i think there are some quotes/points from that
session that we all be remembering over the next 6 months
Really good to see what NEFers have done, Hamish obviously reaching great
heights. Fantastic advice, whether it be about survival or raising money. You
would struggle to find such valuable advice on the internet. Great way to finish
off the BootCamp day 1 as it made everyone realise that could be us!
Lots of useful advice. Slightly long and hard to focus on at times - maybe more
visual prompts - harder for people with learning difficulties to process
information only verbally.

WHY DID YOU GIVE THIS RATING?

20 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

The gamified approach to thinking about team relationships, trust and business
and morals was immersive.
Miss the Friday's session
Anand and his team challenged us, beyond what we had realised. I am sure, even
now, some of us are still reeling from the perspective challenge.
Loved the game but I didn’t take part in the finance sadly so can’t say!
Loved the game
The game was spot on; it got us to think on our feet, mix with our peers and
gave us a fresh perspective to business.
this was an amazing thought provocative game. It has made me reconsider how I
would like to grow my company, nourish my employees, and the impact the business
has in the world.
Was a good game, felt slightly rushed by them but that could’ve been a part of
the game.
I love the concept. Gamifying learning will always be a hit
These were my least favourite sessions. Anand and the team were great and you
could tell they had really thought long and hard about providing something
unique however, the games themselves felt long and tedious.
I thought these sessions were really eye-opening. Learning through doing rather
than 'rope learning'. The only thing that I would change would be explaining in
more detail how other teams achieved their score.
He made me see game from different views which I would never see by myself only.
I thought both games were very powerful in demonstrating complex concepts
through experiential learning.
Excellent speaker and very motivating.
Learnt a lot from this section, my only critic is that more introverted in the
group got overwhelmed by the strong, extrovert characters
Great messaging and well spoken. Was a pleasure to listen to.
This was really great. The perspectivity game is amazing, and I am already
speaking to them about how we can get them into my business to run something
similar. This is only not a 10 as it would have been great to have some more
time on the finance part a I felt that the impact of the perspectivity game came
from the discussion, and we didn't really get that in the finance part
Everyone loved the games and hearing the thought process behind it afterwards.
Team building and settled everyone's nerves about meeting new people. Would even
buy the board so I can play it again. all the presentations/speakers were really
coherent.
Amazing game, really enjoyable. Again, more difficult for people with learning
difficulties. This feedback was given to them of how they could tailor it. Would
have found it helpful to have the rules written down/a summary to be kept on the
screen as I was not able to take in all the information at the start as well as
others due to my learning difficulty.
I think simulations are great ways for people to learn together and was a nice
way to actually work in partnership. I do think there should have been better
context setting that we were entering simulations, to trust the process, and
prepare for that kind of thinking.

21 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

It was interesting having a past brief to work on. Enjoyed watching the
responses of other teams.
Miss the Friday's session
Imelda clearly articulated her expertise and gave us opportunities to challenge
our own thinking and perspectives on marketing and storytelling. A longer
session!
Didn’t take part in most of the session so can’t really say!
To be honest not interested in marketing but she was good
She was concise and broke down Marketing into easily achievable steps.
It was a practical session but I didn't get to take in the strategies that the
other teams came up with which were actually quite applicable to my business
Broke down the marketing techniques and funnels very well, the hands on approach
relating to past clients really gave me a clear views on how marketing connects
to sales and what I could implement in my business. No improvements
She was great! Lots of useful tips and pointers
Fantastic session, I really learnt a lot about Marketing, Marketing funnels and
picked up some useful tips for how to navigate marketing for my own business. I
would love to have another session with her.
Marketing is such a massive area, so she did really well in getting so many
points across in the time frame she had. Maybe a little more 'hand-holding'
during writing up our own plans, to check we were on the right plan path.
Was pleasure having her! More time and q&a wouldve been great.
It was a great overall view of marketing. Since everyone was at different levels
of their marketing knowledge, rather than a challenge, I feel it would have made
more sense to unpack a few different case studies.
Clearly knew her stuff about marketing!
Interesting exercise, would have been better to give half the groups one company
and half the other as we all had the same ideas
Very well spoken, knowledgeable and interesting to engage with!
This was definitely effected by the amount of questions people asked in the
first hour, and probably meant we had less time that we needed for the rest of
it. This was also the subject I had least experience in, and I did feel there
were some references or comments that I didn't really underatnd or have context
for.
Clearly an expert in the Digital Marketing field. I knew a little about
marketing but now I feel more up to speed. I have also passed on some of the
tips to friends with businesses. Would have been nice to know some non-digital
marketing techniques as those will be important for my business.
She was my favorite amazing!
So valuable, amazing energy and presence. Wouldn't change a thing.
Appreciated her challenges- I think she should have left a Q&A at the end for
people to ask personal questions, rather than have that take time on the top
end.

19 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

Miss the Friday's session
Both did a great job of articulating what is to be expected on the journey over
the next six months
Both clear and made the content engaging and fun!
They were great
it was consise
They made me feel welcomed and respected, was happy to help at any time and
again very knowledgeable. They showed me another perspective to the
entrepreneurship journey which was to be authentic.
Engaging and useful
Great. Really down to earth and very welcoming to all participants.
Talks about a lot of good thing, and very reassuring. Some points could be
condensed a little, but I don't mind.
Energy 🔥
Their introductions to the program were good and got us off to a good start.
Since the bootcamp was quite broad, would have been good to get a sense of what
the objective was over these two days. I'd say more time could have been spent
on the reflection pieces in a more structured form to really think about tying
the different concepts we learned over the two days together. Would have been
great to hear from Mike's experience having done the programme before and
Richard's experience overseeing the programme on some specific examples on
making the most of the programme.
Both were full of energy and I really liked how informative both were.
Unfortunately, I was not able to attend the Thursday, but most of the
information seemed clear from what I did see.
Both very welcoming, engaging and energising
Engaging people and really motivating which is critical as this sets the tone
for the next 6 months.
This was good - using my entire vocabulary there - it was obviously stuff that
needed to happen, but it didn't feel like time wasted at all
Richards opening presentation was coherent and well presented. Great intro to
the course. Mike was exceptional over the two days, everyone loved him.
Could be slightly better time-managed, some speeches a bit too long.
All clear and helpful, but something that would have been really would be to
have set norms of how we could all best communicate in the group and even have
those posted in each session. For example, asking our cohort to step back if we
have been talking too much or step up if we have not shared, speaking from the I
versus the we, active listening when someone is speaking that we give them our
full attention and coming up with a norm if people need to have tech time,
encouraging challenge, dissent from the group. Those are just some ideas.

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT THE NEF+ BOOTCAMP?

25 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

Getting to meet the team and other cofounders in person
Meeting new people and learning what other people are passionate about
Meeting likeminded young entrepreneurial thinkers.
Meeting everyone and finding out everything they do!
meeting people
Meeting the other NEFers
The opportunity to meet my peers from different races, walks of life who are
running diverse businesses.
I enjoyed all of it; from meeting and hearing the presentations to the
activities and team building etc.
the soft skills i picked
Meeting and interacting with peers.
Meeting cohort members
It was great to feel like I was taking a step towards my dreams and goals. I
left the bootcamp feeling really excited about the programme and all the things
coming up such as the mentoring and coaching. It was also great to be around
other entrepreneurs and have conversations about business. The NEF team were
also really friendly and approachable which I really appreciated.
Meeting the new cohort
The effort to drill in the idea of being venerable. Also, talking and meeting
like minded people.
Meeting new entrepreneurs... its amazing as i do not have to explain every word
to them haha.
Getting to meet and interact with the cohort through a variety of activities and
scenarios. Really enjoyed the perspectivity game, as that touched upon a lot of
the dynamism and complexity that is quite relevant to the industry I am in.
Laura's coaching session was really useful, as well as Hamish's talk. I think
both left lasting impressions and gave me things to think about for the
programme ahead.
I found it to be very motivating and it was a great icebreaker to meet others.
This may sound strange, however I like how it has made me feel ....my
vulnerabilities have been exposed and I felt quite emotional on Friday evening,
it was incredible how open, honest and trustworthy everyone was. I am hoping
that this exposure will highlight the true areas of focus and look forward to
where it will take me.
Getting together with like minded people who want to be challenged, aspire to be
the change we all want to see. It was inspirational and a look into the next 6
months.
The perspectivity game, and discussion was amazing - but generally meeting
everyone and talking to different people has to come out on top
The people. From the staff/helpers to my fellow cohorters
Learning more about myself
Laura, George and Imelda's talks. And the games on the friday
The spread of sessions and content mixed with learning people’s experiences

WHAT COULD WE DO DIFFERENTLY OR CHANGE NEXT TIME TO MAKE THE NEF+ BOOTCAMP
BETTER?

21 OUT OF 26 ANSWERED

Slightly earlier finish. After 4 concentration and focus dwindles
Shorter sessions. It was quite tiring after a whole day of constant talks
Send detailed/accurate programme resources ahead of time so we spend less time
in the details of the programme.
Maybe break up the second half of the day a bit more
I think the better the cohort knows each other the better. So perhaps each table
does a "round the table" on what they are working on and challenges etc. Then
strategically suffel the tables until everyone has spoken to each other. Also,
name tags would've been good.
Give us name tags so it’s easier to remember our names.
n/a it was really good, enjoyed it.
more ice breakers
The food
Maybe conduct the sessions in a bigger space as there were a lot of big
personalities in the room and it would often get quite loud when working in the
smaller teams.
Almost nothing, but maybe instigate a cheeky pint/drink/social after the day on
friday.
Would have been good to have name tags. Putting a name to the face is easier to
remember. The other thing is having an objective for the two days and some type
of takeaway or prompt at the end, that we could think about practically in our
business.
Perhaps timings/order of each session.
Providing resources to people who are unable to attend one of the days and
publishing the dates on the website in advance.
It was very start up focussed and it would have been interesting to balance
speakers with those from organisations that are scaling at pace.
I think the space is quite small, and therefore very loud when working/talking.
Actively getting people to sit with others and providing networking ice breakers
would have been useful.
I think this may apply to all future sessions, but how to make sure we don't
derail presenters/content with questions about our specific businesses is really
important. Keeping questions like that to the end may be the best sometimes, as
i'm not advocating stopping them entirely!
Not a lot. Concentrating for few hours straight then having a 5-minute break
where you are making connections with people was quite tiresome. Condense the
presentations slightly and give more time for everyone to get to know each
other.
Asking people with learning difficulties/disabilities how this could be better
tailored/about any reasonable adjustments beforehand. Keeping to time, more
regular breaks would have been helpful for me. The room itself I find difficult
due to the acoustics - I found the noise of everyones' voices very overwhelming.
I think a name game would have been good as an ice breaker or name tags to help
us familiarise ourselves with everyone's names. Considering it's a large group
it's been a struggle remembering names for a few of us. Also it would have been
great to give the new people who joined us today the opportunity to share who
they are, what they do and things we ought to know about them. Everyone shared
so openly yesterday and trust has begun to form, so new people coming in without
an introduction makes things awkward. Aside from that, I am really enjoying the
programme so far and look forward to what's planned for the upcoming weeks.
Create norms for the group or have us create them on how we all interact, it
becomes exhausting when the same people continue to speak up and often there is
domination of voices by the men in the group.

[FINAL QUESTION] DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER THOUGHTS OR COMMENTS?

Maybe you could bring in a mentor or coach next time to talk about their
experience with the programme ?

Nope!
I can't wait for the rest of the course.
With these long forms, maybe something other than typeform could be used as I
don't think we can save our answers on here. Also for feedback, if you let us
know that we are going to be giving feedback on each presenter ahead of time,
that would be helpful. We could possibly write it down somewhere.

A strong start to the programme!

I think it's important to acknowledge those who speak a lot more and louder than
others - this can guide a conversation off topic and make others feel more
intimidated to speak.
I think this will happen as we create our squads, but it would be great to speak
as a group as to why you have decided to add some of us from the scale up side,
and what you think it will add etc, as i'm not sure everyone was entirely sure
of the set up
I'm even more excited about the course than when I signed on! Love the
atmosphere, the people and now I can't wait to crack on.
