Brent Taylor, 63, had run the White Lion Hotel in Rawtenstall for 16 years when a renewal of leases by Stonegate Group meant he felt he had no other option than to leave. Brent had run the pub with his wife, Ann, who died last year. The pub hosted a memorial garden dedicated to her. The White Lion Hotel was community-led and had been a pub Brent says he could have run 'blindfolded'. They hosted a long list of clubs there on a weekly basis, including a quiz team and pool teams. He will now move to The Railway Tavern on Bury Road by the end of the month with hopes to open on Friday, August 26. Sharing the news on social media, Brent said: "It gives me great sadness to announce that after 16 years of running a fantastic pub, The White Lion Rawtenstall will cease trading at the end of this week. Please can I thank all of my wonderful friends from the bottom of my heart for their custom over the years. It's going to be an emotional week for me and hope everyone will call in for a drink or two to say goodbye." On a 'brighter note', he added: "On a brighter note I will be moving shortly to The Railway Tavern on Bury Road and hopefully opening on Friday 26th August for the Bank Holiday weekend." After losing his wife Ann in 2020, Brent Taylor feels he has 'lost everything' after being given 'no option' to continue as landlord at the White Lion pub in Rawtenstall In March this year, Brent spoke of the challenge he faced when a renewal in leases with Stonegate Group meant he was given 'no option' to continue as landlord. Brent told LancsLive at the time: "I've got loads of memories here, I feel wrong leaving her behind. She was my life and I'm really upset and heartbroken at all, it isn't something I should be going through now." Since announcing his move to The Railway Tavern, supporters of both Brent and The White Lion have shared their best wishes for his next chapter. Alan Heys wrote: "So sad to see this come to an end. Have had some brilliant nights in the Lion. Made many new friends in there. Best wishes in your new venture. We will come and see you."
