Sensorimotor Control - What the Neck is that? Cervicocephalic proprioception
(CCP) is critical to well-functioning sensorimotor control. The connection
between the structures and functions of the cervical spine (neck), vestibular
system, and visual-motor systems related to sensorimotor control have been
studied extensively. Impaired CCP is associated with subjective complaints of
neck pain, dizziness, visual disturbances, imbalance, and falls. These
symptoms are commonly reported in individuals with diagnosed or suspected
central and peripheral vestibular disorders and whiplash-associated
disorders, including concussion and idiopathic neck pain. Currently, the
number of tests and measures used to assess physical impairments related to
the structures and function of the cervical spine are lacking in both
availability and objectivity. When an individual presents to a healthcare
provider with symptoms associated with CCP, it is critical to assess overall
sensorimotor control in order to understand the origin of symptoms and
customize a treatment approach for rehabilitation. Recent technological
advancements in wearable movement sensors have enabled the development of
tools that can quantify cervical spine movement performance and provide
reliable, objective outcome measures. The Butterfly Test (NeckCare™ System,
NeckCare™, Iceland), formerly “The Fly,” was created to assess
cervicocephalic proprioception (CCP) by quantifying sensorimotor performance
of the cervical spine. The NeckCare™ System analyzes a patient's movement and
provides data that clinicians use to create a customized treatment plan and
monitor patient progress over time. This clinical assessment relies upon
sensory information from visual, vestibular, and somatosensory systems to
