have adopted, and new approaches to learning they execute with authority on
their path to earning a FIVE on their exams.

Let's Talk To Find Out If Our Program Is Right For You

FORMER COLLEAGUES AND PARENTS OF STUDENTS HAVE QUITE A BIT TO SAY ABOUT OUR
SERVICES ALSO . . .

“Karin is one of the most intelligent, well-travelled, and sophisticated
educators that I have had the honor of working with in my 30 years of teaching.
I have never seen a colleague work harder to create, implement, and (most
importantly) assess and provide authentic feedback for students. Karin is
absolutely on a mission to help students become skilled and confident writers.
She spends hundreds of hours outside of school working diligently and with
incredible focus to not just ‘grade’ student writing but to help our students
revise, edit, and reconstruct their writing with specific goals in mind. The
evidence of her success is the pilgrimage of college students who come back
every break to see her.”

— KAREN T. (former colleague)

“Ms. Uhlenhop designs lessons that are relevant, motivating, and engage students
in active learning. . . . [She] creates a learning environment where all
students feel welcomed and respected, one that is both safe and consistent for
her students. She is a teacher that students trust and admire and is an asset to
our community. Ms. Uhlenhop  holds her students accountable and to high
standards . . . [and] provides constant feedback and support to assure all
students are capable of achieving their academic as well as personal goals. She
is a teacher that students, parents, colleagues trust and admire.”

— GINA P. (former administrator)

“I don’t know what he’s done or how he did it, but I can honestly say that I
have nothing negative to say, except that he somehow transferred his enthusiasm
for history and politics to me, seeing as I can’t stop reading and watching
documentaries, and eerily looking for ulterior motives behind the words and
actions of our politicians.”

— ADESH P. (former student)

“Thank you for putting up with my annoying emails. Thank you for answering all
of my pestering questions. Thank you for being understanding, compassionate, and
empathetic. . . . I always knew I was interested in the English language, but it
was you who made me realize my love for literature.”

— NANCY A. (former student)

“During my thirty-eight years as a teacher, rarely have I seen [another teacher]
approach their subject and students with the enthusiasm and caring that Mat has
this year. . . . It is a pleasure to see a teacher demand, and get results, of
his students the way he did this year. . . . On a personal note, Mat taught my
son [who later became valedictorian] in AP history. I can honestly say that he
has never been pushed as hard in his high school career as he was by Mr. Astrom.
His thinking skills and in-depth understanding have been raised to the college
level. I think this speaks very highly of Mat’s abilities.”

— JIM W. (mentor-teacher and former colleague)

“Mat brought two things to his teaching that are basic to his nature: his
respect for the students in his care and his easy way with them. He is
comfortable with his students. Consequently, they respect him and are
comfortable in his classes.”

— SALLY H. (former mentor and administrator)

“Annika comes home from her history classes excited to tell us about the class
discussions. . . . Mr. Astrom has been able to teach specific concepts in
history, such as going back to source documents and using a wide variety of
resources. . . . He has also been able to teach Annika how to write essays,
study more effectively and how to prepare for exams. . . . Annika has a
diagnosis of dyslexia and often felt insecure about her abilities at school. By
incorporating specific strategies for studying, [she] is much more confident in
her academic abilities in general and is experiencing success in her other
school subjects as well . . . and is much more confident that she will
successfully complete college.”

— SUZANNE H. (mother of former student)

“I wanted to take the time to say thank you for everything you did to support me
this year, both academically and personally. . . . Your innovative activities
and enthusiasm are something I dearly admire, and I'm grateful that I can trust
you to give me good life advice. My love for diverse cultures grew because your
class was always engaging and interesting. . . . I don't know how, but you
worked miracles. For the first time in my life, I feel utterly proud of my
skills as a writer, and that's all thanks to you. I'm endlessly grateful for
your unconditional concern for me and your students. It makes you an
unforgettable teacher.”

— EUGENIA W. (former student)

“I don’t remember if I had the chance to thank you for what you taught me during
my senior year. I grew in so many ways that I didn’t realize until now.”

— Katlyn M. (former student)

“Mr. Astrom is one of the best teachers you will come across. His is by far the
best and most dedicated teacher I have been taught by in all 12 years of my
education. With his expert help, you will emerge with a deeper understanding of
not just the facts and events of history, but also who we are and what it means
to be American. . . . And the more time that passes, the more I have come to
realize that the skills I gained extend far outside the classroom. With all the
critical thinking and investigative skills we’ve learned, it’s become second
nature to me to look past the surface details, whether it be what we see on TV,
what we read, or what we are told, in order to find the unbiased truth for the
pure satisfaction of being informed and knowing what is going on around the
world.”

— ROBBIE A. (former student)

WHY DO YOU NEED US?

GREAT QUESTION! IN SHORT, IT’S BECAUSE WE ARE EXCEPTIONAL TEACHERS.

BUT LET US TRY TO EXPLAIN WHAT THAT MEANS IN OUR OWN WORDS . . .

KARIN UHLENHOP

As a kid, I loved stories - reading them, writing them, living them, or
imagining them. While I was raised in Wilmette and graduated from New Trier in
1989, my inspiration came from the vast world around me. My journey has taken me
to some of those fascinating places, but I am not done yet . . .

My view of history and literature changed when I entered high school and was
handed The Odyssey - the first book I ever hated - and was required to write
analytical essays. For the first time, reading and writing became daily
expectations and, at times, dreaded chores that came with deadlines. But I still
loved the stories behind the assignments.

My twenties were marked by professional uncertainty as I tried to find a job
that I loved, that engaged me in the way I saw my parents and my friends
enthused by their careers. With more free time, I found myself drawn again to
reading and writing for pleasure, and I was also exposed to colleagues’
children, whose energy and inquisitiveness was infectious. People began telling
me I should be a teacher.

Eighteen years later, I love my career. I spend my waking hours with teenagers,
reading and writing and speaking and listening. We share ideas and stories - our
own and others’.  I try to help them understand that the written word matters.
While they may not directly experience the caste system of India as in Arundhati
Roy’s The God of Small Things or the concentration camps as in Elie Wiesel’s
Night, they are likely to encounter forces similar to those that created those
societies, and they must be empowered to use their own words and their
individual voices to build a better future. Even more importantly, though, I
believe literature and language especially matter because they have the power to
create a shared understanding of diverse experiences and cultures. Though it may
feel like it sometimes, we do not live in a bubble.

Today, I love The Odyssey and I love helping young people through their
journeys, however epic or ordinary they may be. The obstacles of high school may
be less fantastical, but students’ ability to overcome them, to grow and learn,
is just as inspiring and heroic.

MATHEW ASTROM

My roommate thought I was a dreamer. A professor at Penn claimed I was a
romantic idealist born of a different era and thought I was just the type that
was needed in a classroom. Those friends in the profession who know me as
“Fearless Leader” watched my career over the years and wondered how did that
happen?

My journey to this place began with a thirst for academics, an adventurous
spirit, and the desire to improve the conditions around me. I am the type to
jump right in. With teaching, I knew quickly that I was in the right place
because I liked children and could communicate well with them. My first job
teaching Science and PE to tiny people in a tiny elementary school showed me
that I simply needed to find the right subject matter and age group.

Mission accomplished. History is it, and the high school audience is my best
fit. Twenty years later and a world of educational experiences in my backpack, I
am poised for the next adventure - GLOBAL EXPERIENCE TEACHING.

So what do I do, and how have I gotten to where I am today? That is not an easy
answer, nor is tracing the journey and miles over the years. Ultimately, I try
to make one good decision after another, weighing the information in front of me
and the experience behind me. Mistakes along the way - a few, no doubt!
Once-in-a-lifetime moments and a collection of personal treasures (including
friends and student success stories) - more than I can count.

My teaching philosophy has always centered on accelerating the learning process
of students, increasing student time on-task and student attention (which
correlates directly to increased academic achievement), and providing students
with an abundance of options to connect positively and effectively with their
academic, emotional, social, and physical needs. The quality of a teacher can
make a tremendous difference in the way children approach learning and grow into
life-long learners. I believe, and those I have worked closely with in the past
agree, that I am one of those teachers that makes a significant difference in my
students’ learning.

DEALING WITH COVID-19:

CAREFULLY MANEUVERING AROUND THE OBSTACLES

EVERY STEP ALONG OUR JOURNEY HAS BETTER PREPARED US TO HELP YOU AS NAVIGATE
THROUGH THE COMPLEXITIES OF YOUR FUTURE.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CLOSED SCHOOLS.

Everyone’s goal, in local communities and across the nation, is to prioritize
the reopening of schools as safely and as quickly as possible given the many
known and established benefits of in-person learning. In the meantime, students
must deal with an assortment of virtual and hybrid education, which often pales
in comparison to in-person learning. They must do so in front of a computer
monitor with a “Zoom-room” full of students they may or may not know. GETeaching
is here to bridge the gap. We excel at distance learning techniques and
specialize in pushing students toward high achievement no matter the setting.

LIMITED CONTACT.

Even in a hybrid learning model, students will only be able to participate in a
limited capacity with their teachers. While cohorting, alternating schedules,
and staggering schedules do increase teacher-student communication, high school
classes are still large and overwhelming for many teachers and students. For
many students who are finishing up their high school career and preparing for
life after graduation, more personal attention is needed. GETeaching is here to
help students achieve their college dreams. We excel at improving academic
analytical writing skills that benefit students at the university level.

NO TIME.

Students, teachers, and parents all have their schedules stretched to capacity
as we rigorously try to fill-in academic gaps when our schools cannot. The
effort needed for preparation and the pace of instruction for teachers in this
medium is unsustainable. Despite what should be ample time on our hands, the
time needed to “catch up” from lost instruction seems to disappear. GETeaching
is here to alleviate some stress on students by providing highly-organized
academic consultations. We excel at getting getting normally high-achieving
students back on track and pushing strong students to superior levels.

Let's talk about how we can help with YOUR situation.

WHAT CAN GETEACHING OFFER YOU DURING THIS TIME OF CRISIS?

SMALL AND PERSONALIZED GROUP INSTRUCTION FROM EXPERIENCED, AWARD-WINNING,
PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS.

Limiting our teaching to small groups chosen to best fit the student’s growth
potential, we can increase time on task and provide extraordinary educational
opportunities and personal support to our students. The small cohorts excel as
trust and routine, not to mention positive peer pressure and high expectations,
build over time along with friendships and student camaraderie. This is THE peer
group you want for your child! Our students are all in it together, leaving no
one behind and sharing the goal of exceptional scores for everyone.

HIGH-LEVEL TEACHING IN AN ONLINE ENVIRONMENT.

Small groups. Safe environments. Sanitary conditions. Our health and the health
of our students are a top priority, and we understand the risks associated with
forming groups of students in academic pods or in classroom settings. We also
understand that top students thrive with extraordinary peer groups guided by
expert teachers. That means attention to detail, providing meaningful feedback,
and fostering a GROWTH MINDSET in students. Our competitive and fast-paced world
is not going to stop as the pandemic carries on. It will end, though, and we
want our students to be positioned to succeed when it does. Adapting to and
learning in this new environment is part of that process. Our personalized
approach with our 100% online sessions will ensure that your student will not
fall behind in the content or skills necessary to be a 21st-century, academic
rock star.
