It is the brightest star in the constellation, and was discovered in 964 by the Persian astronomer Abd al-Rahman al-Sufi, although it is likely that the star was known prior to this. Alpheratzscheat is a binary star, which means it is made up of two stars orbiting around a common center. The two stars are a blue-white giant known as Alpha Andromedae A, and a smaller yellow-white star known as Alpha Andromedae B. Alpha Andromedae A is the brighter of the two stars, and is about 2.09 times the mass of the Sun. Alpha Andromedae B is about 1.53 times the mass of the Sun. The two stars orbit each other with a period of about 590 years. The two stars of Alpheratzscheat can be seen with the naked eye in dark, clear skies. It is one of the stars of the "Great Square" asterism, which is formed by four stars in the constellation of Pegasus. From the northern hemisphere, the four stars appear in the shape of a large square. Alpheratzscheat is located at the upper left corner of the square. Alpheratzscheat is an important star in astronomical circles, since it is the brightest star in the constellation of Andromeda. It is also known as the northern gateway to the constellation of Pegasus. As such, it is often used as a reference point for stargazers, and can be used to help locate other stars in the night sky.
