Perioperative and Consultative Medicine

Worldwide, there are over 200 million noncardiac surgeries performed annually.1
Since the landmark article by Goldman and colleagues2 in the late 1970s to
characterize cardiac risk associated with noncardiac surgery, researchers have
made significant gains to identify vulnerable patients and minimize
perioperative risk. The American College of Cardiology (ACC) has subsequently
given us multiple editions of perioperative cardiac guidelines.3 The field of
perioperative medicine was born, and the research has blossomed to encompass
many other organ systems. Office-based internists and hospitalists have noticed.
At the Society of Hospital Medicine CONVERGE Annual Meetings, perioperative
medicine lectures are among the most well attended. Along with cardiologists,
surgeons, and anesthesiologists, hospitalists and office-based internists also
have become many of the scholars of this field. Many are contributors to this
issue.
