Print With all of the conversations happening about the world today, you might’ve heard the term intersectionality, but do you know what it means? First coined by law professor and social theorist Kimberlé Crenshaw in 1989, intersectionality is “the interconnected nature of social categorizations such as race, class, and gender regarded as creating overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage.” More simply, it means the places where peoples’ identities meet. For instance, a Black woman may at times encounter both racism and sexism separately, but she might also experience intersectional discrimination where those identities overlap. The wage gap is a clear indicator of the reality of intersectional discrimination. According to The Institute for Women's Policy Research, for every dollar a white man earned in 2022, a white woman earned $0.82, a Black woman earned $0.70, and a Latina earned $0.65, and the wage inequality is found both within occupations and between occupations. Watch: Learn more about the history of intersectionality and examples of how it works in this video from Teach Tolerance. Need help with this video? Click Here From ethnicity to income and education levels, identity markers do not exist independently of each other. And, unfortunately, neither does discrimination. Thankfully, we can have nuanced conversations about countering injustice for all the more knowledgeable we become. Remember: Too often, when we forget about or discredit intersectionality, we run the risk of damaging one marginalized group while trying to uplift another. Equality isn’t truly equality if help for one hurts another. Remembering intersectionality and increasing our awareness of the plight of others is key.
