“Poetry is always sublunary.”
—Julio Cortázar
Sublunary Editions is an independent press based in Seattle, Washington,
publishing small volumes of exciting literature.
“The longer a book is, the less literature it has.”
—César Aira
Through our Empyrean series, we publish reprints and fresh compendiums of great
unsung works from the annals of literary history.
“So can wolves and leopards be heard, when, in the icy depths of winter, they
bellow at the firmament [...]”
—Heinrich von Kleist, tr. Spencer
We also publish Firmament, a quarterly magazine of international writing edited
by Jessica Sequeira.
“To be a miscreant: a pretty good disposition for a roman-fleuve: the miscreant
is sublunary, terrestrial to the bone [...]”
—Pierre Senges, tr. Siefring
“Ambition, Disdaine, Malice, difference of Opinions, can not approach this
Place, resembling those foggie mists, which cover those Lists of sublunarie
things.”
—William Drummond of Hawthornden

Two Digging
by Carl Rakosi
He whistled and felt good because the moon dipped like a pretzel in blue wine.
Far away a dark mass moved like a cloud. It sagged down on him with set
features; it was an idea.

The New Freedom
by Margery Latimer
If you are grammatical you will shudder at times, but if you are fortunate
enough not to be hampered in that way you will sigh long and deeply. Here is
ecstasy. Now you are free to add to the race of words as rapidly as you please.
Quaint words, crazy words, words with limp arms and broken hearts. Don’t let
anyone stop you! Down with birth control!

William Gaddis and Russian Literature
by Steven Moore
I can’t think of another American-born writer as devoted to Russian literature
as Gaddis, and for that reason I am delighted that my book is being translated
into Russian. And as more of Gaddis’s novels are translated into Russian—Sergey
Karpov’s translation of ‘Carpenter’s Gothic’ was published in 2021, and his
translation of ‘The Recognitions’ is underway—I hope Russian readers will come
to appreciate his novels as much as Gaddis did those of their greatest authors.

by Sublunary Editions
Today, Poetry Magazine is running a feature review of The Collected Poems of

Moore, who zeroes in on just how important Marguerite's years as a poet prepared
her for "writing magniloquent prose, and reading *The Collected Poems* prepares
readers for her maximalist novel."
