(Courtesy of SBX Youth and Family Services) By Monserrat Solis | msolis@scng.com | PUBLISHED: May 25, 2022 at 6:00 a.m. | UPDATED: May 25, 2022 at 8:25 a.m. Homeless youths and families will have a new place to live in Moreno Valley thanks to a project that will turn three homes into affordable housing. The renovations will take about a year and will house 12 youths between 16 and 25 and families with children who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness by spring 2023, said Corey Jackson, founder and chief executive officer of the non-profit Sigma Beta Xi Youth and Family Services. The goal is to house 40 to 60 residents in five years. Jackson said that, “unlike other projects, this is specifically for children. This is not a shelter; it’s permanent housing.” He added it would be the first youth homeless housing in the city. The project broke ground Saturday, May 21. Combined, the properties on Perris Boulevard are 3.97 acres. Buying the land cost $2.1 million. The rest of the relief package dollars will renovate the houses and add additional units. Currently, each house has four bedrooms with three bathrooms and two-car garages. Additionally, there is a pool, a mobile home and two metal sheds on one property, according to Zillow. The renovations will include a technology center — that will be open to the public — and an on-site unit for a property manager. The technology lab is pending approval by the city and other authorities, Jackson said. The housing program will prioritize the city’s youths who are transitioning out of foster care, but operators will be flexible for other residents in nearby cities, Jackson said. The 2022 County Homeless Point in Time count, released Tuesday, May 24, reported that 87 people were homeless in Moreno Valley. The project “is not designed for the severely mentally ill,” Jackson said. “These are college students who are living in their car.” RELATED LINKS * How Riverside County plans to spend $239 million in COVID-19 relief funds * Riverside approves controversial homeless housing * Hemet OKs center for homeless and others, despite city leaders’ concerns * $5.8 million plan targets homeless camps along Riverside’s Santa Ana River * RAND research finds the homeless avoid big shelters but want to get off the streets “I am hopeful that these programs and initiatives will help end youth homelessness, not only in Moreno Valley, but across Riverside County,” Moreno Valley Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez said in an email. The program will use the county’s Continuum of Care services network to select youths to live in the residence. SBX Youth and Family Services, founded in 1998, aims to break the cycle of poverty and violence through community organization, education and mentoring. Other youth services offered by the organization include mentoring, workshops and events. It offers a Rite of Passage program that focuses on Black youth empowerment and culture education. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Newsroom Guidelines * News Tips * Contact Us * Report an Error %5B%7B%22id%22%3A%22154%22%2C%22name%22%3A%22%22%2C%22description%22%3A%22%22%7D%5D NEWS AS IT BREAKS.
