MY SPORTS BUCKET LIST CHECK: A DAY AT AUGUSTA Our Resident Golf Expert, Alex Lauzon, On His Time at The Masters Practice Round Nicky G 12 Apr 2022 * * * * By Alex Lauzon from the “Course of Life” podcast Life never unfolds in the way you expect. You simply have to roll with the punches. As sports fans, we all develop our “bucket lists” of events we would drop everything to attend if the opportunity presented itself. For football fans, it’s likely a Super Bowl featuring your hometown team. College kids dream of a Final Four trip that ends in their colors winning it all. For golfers, that dream is undoubtedly a day at Augusta National Golf Club and The Masters. And my day finally came. LET'S DREAM A LITTLE DREAM First: my dream scenario. In this dream, I win that fateful Masters lottery we all willingly subject ourselves to every year. I have a full weekend VIP pass to see history (obviously), roaming the lush, green fairways at ANGC for 12 hours a day, sipping Azaleas, and crushing pimiento cheese sandwiches to my heart’s content. In the dream, it’s 70 degrees and sunny every day in golf’s paradise, right? Alas! Attending golf’s hallowed grounds where countless moments in the game’s history have been etched — it was all much more organized than how reality actually unfolded. FACT: REALITY IS STILL PRETTY AWESOME Opportunities like a day at Augusta rarely hit you in the face. My invite came in the form of a last-minute vacation re-route, snagging one of the last seats on a plane to Augusta Monday evening to attend the Tuesday practice round — and yes, Tuesday only. No VIP in sight. All this complemented by a brewing weather forecast nothing short of abysmal. Knowing time was of the essence and full day was likely to become a half day, I was beating down the front gates at 7 a.m. to salvage whatever I could out of the Tuesday practice round trip. Dreams of walking the full 18 had to be altered. The second nine, where all the magic happens, would have to do. My fantasy three-meal menu was cut to two, with so many concessions to sample but only so much time. These dreams and checklists of what to see and do at Augusta had riddled my mind for decades; very little was getting in the way. SCENE: KIDS IN A CANDY STORE One similarity amongst every patron is just that exact disposition – everyone in attendance had a child-like glee for the moment, as we were all checking off bucket list moments long in the making just walking through the gates. Augusta is on EVERY golf fan’s hit list, so a cheery demeanor is contagious as you traverse the grounds. I had never been so happy to spend $200 at the pro shop in about four minutes. SCENE: AMEN CORNER As you file through Amen Corner and grab your morning coffee and breakfast by the par three 12th tee, or stop at 16 to watch balls skip over the water or even take the walk past 18 green… the memories of Masters' past flood through. The spot where Tiger chipped in and the Nike logo hung for seemingly ever, the spot where Charlie and Tiger delivered the hug heard round the world, or where Phil finally broke through all are precious mementos of the game that lived and breathed in these same spaces. It had a meditative experience that you don’t feel at every stadium or sporting venue. SCENE: NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART What they say is true about the grounds – it IS as beautiful as it appears on camera, and it IS indeed a tough walk. The undulations make it hilly to say the least, and there seemingly does not exist a flat bit of any sort on the property. The rolling terrain, carefully cut architecture and glorious color palate all make for the mystique. Azaleas poke out in the all right places, and it’s shocking if a spare piece of trash sits unattended to for more than 15 seconds. SCENE: A LIVING WORK OF ART Augusta is not just hallowed ground for the history of a game we love; it’s a living, breathing work of art for sports fans (not to mention a master class in landscaping). While my full day there was cut to about five hours before the horn blew, it was quickly apparent to anyone in attendance that this place just operates differently. From beauty in color and presentation, to efficiency in fan experience and amenities, a day at Augusta National will become an unforgettable bucket list experience for any golfer or fan of the game. The pimiento was tasty but slightly overrated, the bathrooms really ARE that nice and it does feel good to detach your cell phone from your hands for a moment in time. THE END As for what we did with the rest of our rain-soaked day in Augusta? The answer (as would be for any tournament guest), is go eat at a chain restaurant and meet John Daly at Hooters. Truly, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Truly, “a tradition unlike any other." PGA NICKY G Dad of 3. WVian by birth. ATX for now.
