DELTA staff have noticed occasional high system load yesterday and this morning
on the Moodle Courses 2324 instance.  We have taken steps to try and prevent any
full outages from occurring but it is possible users may have noticed
intermittent sluggishness and/or connection timeouts both during the day
yesterday (1/8) and this morning.  Yesterday afternoon we increased server
resources and today have implemented a load balancing change as of around 10am
to help the system absorb the start of the semester load.  We will continue to
monitor closely and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Migrating the Moodle Courses files

On Tuesday, August 8th, between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, DELTA staff will be
performing maintenance on the current Moodle Courses server (Courses 2324).  We
will be migrating the Moodle Courses 2324 file share to new NAS (Network
Attached Storage) platform.  There will be on outage of Moodle Courses 2324 only
during this time.  This work will not affect the Projects or Outreach services
or older Moodle archives.

Technical details:  The existing NAS used by Moodle is nearing end of life. 
While most of the data has already been copied to the new NAS, Moodle Courses
2324 will need to be shut down to allow for an accurate final sync of the data. 
Once that is done, the web servers will be pointed to the new NAS shares and
brought back online.

decommissioning an older file storage platform that will soon go out of

Datacenter issue causing Moodle outage

DELTA staff will be cleaning up behind the scenes for the rest of the day.  If
you see any DELTA services not working please let us know at learntech@ncsu.edu.

Update 10:24am:  We have restored the Moodle environments, courses, projects,
and outreach.  There may be some slowness for a while still.  

Update 09:13am:  The cooling has been restored to the datacenter.  We are
currently working to bring our hardware back online and see if there's been any
damage to the services.

The datacenter which hosts DELTA services including Moodle, WolfWare, and
WolfWare Wordpress is experiencing a loss of cooling resulting in high heat. 
These high temps are affecting DELTA's servers, causing an outage of Moodle,
WolfWare, and WolfWare WordPress.  DELTA staff is working with the datacenter to
get the situation resolved.

Update 2022-08-08 1:37pm:  Work on Projects and Outreach has been completed, and

On Monday, August 8th, between 9am and 3pm, DELTA staff will be upgrading the
Projects and Outreach Moodle servers to Moodle 4.  Both the Projects and
Outreach Moodle servers will be unavailable for an extended period during this
time.  

Projects and Outreach will both be upgraded to Moodle 4.0.x (matching the
version on the Courses servers).  Additionally plugins and LTI connections will
be updated to Moodle 4 versions as necessary.  Web servers will also be updated
during this time and connections to databases and storage confirmed.

Over the past few days, users may have encountered intermittent session related
issues with the Moodle Courses 2122 server.  The service responsible for storing
user sessions began experiencing memory contention late in the day on 3/27, and
the issue eventually began causing some tasks such as quizzes, exams, etc to be
interrupted as sessions were automatically purged from the system in attempt to
free memory.  The issue has been identified and addressed with a temporary fix,
which will be made permanent at an upcoming maintenance window.  We do apologize
to those that were affected.

root cause analysis, but is confident the problem has been solved for now.

have completely returned to normal.

The Moodle courses server courses2122 is currently offline.  DELTA staff is

We are pushing this maintenance window to tomorrow morning due to a
configuration issue discovered with our environment.  The new window is 8/14
from 7am-10am.


On Friday, 8/13 beginning at 12pm DELTA staff will be applying updates to all
current Moodle instances (Courses 2122, Projects, Outreach).  We expect these
services to incur roughly a 30 minute outage each.  We do not anticipate needing
