eClass Scheduled Course Archiving 2022
Posted by Chris Goetz on 06 May 2022 01:18 PM

Attention eClass users,

We have an important announcement that may impact your older credit courses on
eClass.

The annual scheduled archiving of credit courses for this year has been
scheduled for May 31st, 2022. This process, described in more detail here,
mandates that credit courses can only remain on eClass for a maximum duration of
four years. Non-credit courses including sandboxes, content development
templates, research/collaboration courses, and eClass External courses are not
affected by this process.

During the archiving process, credit courses that are more than four years old
will be removed from eClass. These courses will no longer appear in a user’s
course list and instructors will no longer be able to directly copy content from
these courses forward into new courses. Instructors will be able to request a
course be restored from the archive by contacting eClass support (but please
note that no student data or submissions will be available in restored courses.)
Instructors or students who wish to have personal copies of any content or
submitted data from these older courses can copy the content from these courses
manually.

The timeline and schedule below describe this process.

Major eClass Upgrade June 2022 - Upcoming Changes
Posted by Dave Laurie on 22 April 2022 11:46 AM

Attention eClass Users,

Please be aware that in June 2022, we will be performing a major version upgrade
to eClass. This upgrade will introduce a variety of feature improvements and bug
fixes across the site.

The upgrade will require a full system outage, which has been scheduled for
Saturday, June 25th 2022 from 12:00AM until 11:59PM (24 hours).

Some of the main system features that will change in the new version of eClass
are listed below:

 * Activity completion information including expected dates, submission
requirements, and any passing grades will now be displayed in pages to
provide students greater visibility into their progress through a course.
 * Quiz essay questions can now have maximum and minimum word count limits
   applied.
 * When creating questions, instructor’s last used settings are saved and all
newly added questions will start with those settings applied.
 * Instructors will have improved visibility into any overrides applied to a
   quiz.
 * Quiz date/time restrictions are more prominently displayed to students on the
quiz description page with any grade to pass also identified.
 * Instructors will now be able to recover any inadvertently deleted quiz
attempts or assignments containing student submissions using the built-in
   course recycle bin.

This list of features may be subject to change before the upgrade takes place.
We will be providing training and support materials to prepare users for major
changes as the upgrade date draws closer.

If you have any questions about this upgrade, please contact us at
eclass@ualberta.ca. If you are interested in testing the latest features coming
to eClass and have not yet signed up to be involved in User Acceptance Testing,
please contact us for more information.

Regards,

Winter 2022 Final Exam Delivery Update
Posted by Dave Laurie on 05 April 2022 03:02 PM

Attention eClass Users,

After the issues experienced in December 2021, IST has been working to improve
eClass performance and reliability for the Winter 2022 term final exam period.
These efforts include infrastructure tuning, improvements to system diagnostics,
and re-evaluation of application traffic and processes.

One outcome of this work is that we have identified pages & tools in the system
that incur a heavy performance load. When these pages have reasonable in-system
workarounds, we will be temporarily disabling these during the official final
exam period.

Affected instructors have been contacted directly if their courses contain any
problematic content.

Students should note that the mobile app will remain off during the exam period
(with re-evaluation scheduled for this summer) and that additionally the
cross-course grade overview report has been disabled. Grades can still be
accessed within individual courses. Students using SEM should also ensure that
they update Chrome in advance of exams, as a version update in mid-March
affected screen recording permissions on macs.

When delivering online exams, instructors should review the guidelines here.

The eClass team’s extended support hours for the final exam period are Monday
through Friday 8:30AM - 9:00PM and Saturdays 8:30AM - 5:30PM.

If you have any questions about these updates or require any assistance with
using any of these exam delivery services, please contact us at
eclass@ualberta.ca.

Regards,
IST eClass Support
