He knows that his children will never take up pottery and that a culturally rich profession like pottery will be extinct soon. “We have no other option but to leave this profession behind. It was Brack who told the villagers that the population of the region is increasing and that the Shola (forest) would be the only source of water for the natives in the future, Brack is believed to have asked the natives to stop the felling of trees and concentrate on the conservation of the forest. “He was the first real conservator of the region,” says Mr. Raju with a smile on his face. “Brack and his wife lived in the forest for over 45 years and they did not allow any locals inside the forest. In the late 1980s when Michel Danino, a French scholar and author at Mother’s Institute of Research, Auroville, came to stay in the bungalow, he involved the locals to be part of the conservation on an experimental basis. “The locals then asked Danino to push for the removal of eucalyptus trees. Raju, a mathematics teacher who is the secretary of the Longwood Shola Watchdog Committee (LSWC). Constituted in May 1998, The LSWC was formed to assist the forest department in protecting the endangered shola forest on the northern edge of Kotagiri town. But little did the committee know that it had to fight against the measures taken by the forest department itself. “The grasslands were destroyed by planting these exotic trees that are not native to the region and not a single blade of grass grew there because of that. The forest department was totally ignorant of this and they used helicopters to disperse acacia seeds throughout the region to make the forest look rich and green. The soil here does not have the bacteria required for the growth of these exotic species and naturally as they took much longer to decompose, they started dominating the region. Mr. Raju said, “We can’t blame the forest officials. The problem is they know everything, but they won’t do anything. All they do is crisis management and retire happily.
