Memorial Day Features Thunderstorms in the East
Severe thunderstorms are likely on this Memorial Day holiday across the
Mid-Atlantic, the Carolinas, and the Southeast. Strong wind gusts, hail
and a few tornadoes are all possible in the afternoon and evening hours.

These thunderstorms will form in a warm and humid airmass that is in place
across the East as an area of low pressure lifts into Quebec and trails a
cold front that will push into this airmass. Behind this front, cooler and
drier air will undercut this warm and muggy airmass and provide the lift
needed for these thunderstorms to form.

The government’s Storm Prediction Center has two Slight Risk areas (a 2
out of 5 on the SPC's thunderstorm outlook severity scale). One area is
localized within northcentral Texas, including Dallas and Waco, Texas. The
second and vastly larger area is banana-shaped, stretching from the New
York/Canada border southward to the eastern half of Pennsylvania and
Mid-Atlantic Coast, just east of the Appalachians, curving westward at the
southern tip into into Georgia and southern Alabama, avoiding Florida
altogether. This area includes a high-population corridor of the U.S.,
including the cities of New York, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Baltimore,
Washington D.C., Virginia Beach, Va., and Charlotte, N.C.

Along with this Slight Risk area, there is a Marginal Risk area exending
further west of and connecting the Slight Risk areas along the Gulf coasts
of Mississippi and Louisiana. This area reaches from the eastern Great
Lakes southward along the Appalachians to the Southeast, westward across
the Deep South and northwest through central Texas into the Texas
Panhandle. There is also a separated area of Marginal Risk that includes
portions of southern Minnesota, southwestern Wisconsin, northern Illinois,
and much of Iowa. Cities included in these risk areas include Houston,
Dallas, San Antonio and Austin, Texas, and Des Moines, Iowa.

Two Severe Thunderstorm Watches are currently in effect. One watch is for
portions of the Mid-Atlantic, including eastern Pennsylvania, northern New
Jersey, and Upstate New York. The other watch is for the Deep South,
including portions of southeastern Alabama, central Georgia, and southern
      South Carolina.

Make sure to frequently check WeatherBug for updates, as a watch can
quickly turn into a warning upon imminent danger. It is important to stay
prepared for active weather. Make sure you know the difference between a
watch and a warning should they become issued. A watch means that
conditions are favorable for severe weather to take place, whereas a
warning means severe weather is imminent and you need to act fast to
prevent damage to property or even loss of life. Remember, “When Thunder
      Roars, Go Indoors!”
