PREPARING FOR SURGERY

It is understandable for a person to be worried before going under the knife.
This is why SB Aesthetics rhin are here to offer all of the specific
instructions that are designed to assist patients in this process.

Before your Santa Barbara rhinoplasty surgery, you are given very specific
dietary guidelines. If a one needs assistance when it comes to taking or
avoiding medications and vitamins, this information is also provided. Washing
your face is another area of concern. You are also going to need someone who is
willing to provide you with a ride to and from your surgery. Someone will also
need to assist you back at home for the first few days so that your focus is on
healing. Following the instructions that are provided positions you for a better
outcome.

THE SURGERY

This treatment takes place over the course of an hour. Some of the more
extensive procedures may take longer. The skin is going to be separated from the
bone during nose surgery. The cartilage that is responsible for making up the
nasal framework is also separated.

Once the cartilage and bone within the nose have been separated, the specialist
sets about the task of sculpting and shaping it to the patient‘s liking. The
step of the process is also affected by the personal technique.

A rasp or chisel is used to remove any bumps. From there, the physician is able
to bring the nasal bones closer together. This creates a narrower bridge of the
nose. Cartilage is then trimmed away so that the tip of the nose can be refined
and reshaped.

Once the nose job has been completed, a nose splint is applied. This is what
allows the nose to maintain the newly sculpted shape it has acquired. The septum
is then supported by soft splints and nasal packs. In some instances, the
splints and nasal packs are kept inside the nostrils.

WHERE WILL SURGERY BE PERFORMED?

SB Aesthetics uses has an accredited surgical center and outpatient surgery
center. For cost and convenience’s sake, these surgeries are performed on an
outpatient basis in most instances. If the rhinoplasty is more complex, a short
inpatient stay is required.

THE ANESTHESIA

General or local anesthesia is typically provided. The preferences of you and
your rhinoplasty specialist and the extent of the surgery will help to make this
decision.

Localized anesthesia offers the a light sedation. The nose and its surrounding
area are going to be numbed. General anesthesia allows the patient to sleep
comfortably while the nose job is taking place. General anesthesia is used for
safety’s sake for the majority of these procedures.

THE INCISIONS

The incision is made inside of the nostrils if the nose job is being done from
the inside. When open procedures take place (which tend to be a bit more
complicated), an incision will be made in the area that separates the nostrils
on the soft tissue. This area is also known as the columella. This is the
preferred and necessary method for tip work. The closed approach is appropriate
for patients simply looking to correct a nose bump.

THE RECOVERY

The patient‘s face is going to be puffy and they will have an achy nose for at
least 24 hours after the rhinoplasty. Pain medication is going to be prescribed
by the doctor to alleviate this discomfort. The person should plan to remain in
bed and keep their head elevated on the first day.

A small amount of bleeding may occur during your first few days back at home.
Any blowing of the nose should be avoided for at least a week so that the
healing process is not disrupted in any way.

The nasal packing is taken out after the first 24 hours and patients experience
far more comfortable once this step has been taken care of. Within one to two
weeks, all of the remaining splints, stitches, and dressings are removed.

The bruising and swelling around the eyes will subside in time. The peak levels
of bruising and swelling should take place about two or three days after the
operation. A cold compress can be applied to reduce swelling and increase
comfort. Much of the bruising and swelling should disappear within two weeks.
Some subtle swelling could take a few months to subside.

The average person should be able to resume their normal routine within a week’s
time. Feeling completely normal, on the other hand, may take several weeks. The
surgeon‘s detailed guidelines on strenuous physical activity must be followed to
the letter. As general rule of thumb, any exercise that will cause a sudden
increase to your blood pressure should be avoided for two to three weeks. Do not
hit your nose or allow it to become sunburned. Exercise caution when using
cosmetics.

Rhinoplasty Before and After

Contact lenses can be worn after surgery and wearing glasses could be more a tad
more difficult. Once the splint has been removed, the nose will still need to
heal. Patients who need to wear glasses right away must tape them to their
forehead or obtain device that allows for their glasses to rest comfortably on
their cheeks.

Frequent visits are going to be made to our offices in the months after your
surgery has taken place. This gives us the chance to closely monitor your
healing process. If there are any unusual symptoms taking place or you have any
questions about the do’s and don’ts, be sure to call a surgeon right away.

RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY

The recovery process varies from individual to individual so it is highly
recommended to follow Dr. Sheffield’s instructions very closely during pre-op
and post-op to ensure the best results and reduce any potential risks.

Here are some tips to accelerate the nose job recovery: – To minimize the risk
of bleeding, keep your head upright as much as you can. – Refrain from hot baths
and alcohol for at least 2 weeks following surgery. – Definitely do not use
decongestants or nasal sprays regardless of the degree of stuffiness. – When
lying down or sleeping, keep your head elevated with a pillow he help improve
congestion. – For dry lips, be sure to use lip balm for chapping. – Refrain from
blowing your nose for at least 1 week post-op. If sneezing occurs, cough it out,
don’t blow it out your nose. – Keeps tabs on your body temperature as an
elevated temp can indicate infection.

Since the rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, you will return to
home on the same day your surgery happens. Make sure you have arranged a ride
home before coming in for surgery. Also be sure to relax as much as possible
once getting home in order to facilitate recovery. You will also need care
during the first twenty four hours after surgery. Some blood may be swallowed in
the recovery process so nausea is a common symptom, but it is manageable.

SIDE EFFECTS OF NASAL SURGERY

– Difficulty breathing due to the internal dressing in the nasal cavity which
will improve as swelling goes down. – Possible numbness and stiffness generally
in the tip of the nose. – Some soreness, potential bruising and some swelling
usually near and around the eyes. – Bursting of small blood vessels as evident
with red spots on the skin surface. – Nose bleeding immediately following the
operation or after 1 week. – The nasal shape can change due to scar tissue
maturity. – Infection in the nose or respiratory which is treatable with
antibiotics. – If the rhinoplasty is performed from the inside, there is
scarring inside the nose but it is not visible and can be felt for a brief
period following surgery.

If any of the following symptoms arise, contact Dr. Sheffield immediately: –
Continuous please which does not stop after ten or fifteen minutes. – Subsequent
increase in pain. – A high body temperature which could indicate infection. –
The inability or difficulty to swallow as normal.

ADJUSTING TO THE NEW LOOK POST SURGERY

It is easy to feel a tad anxious when your face is bruised and swollen. This is
a feeling that we understand completely. Please do not forget that these are
side effects which will soon subside. As each day passes, the newly sculpted
nose continues to look better and better.

Within a week or so, the bruising or swelling is going to disappear completely.
This allows patients to get adjusted to their new appearance.

It could take months for the rest of the more subtle swelling to go down but
these are the sorts of issues that are not going to be visible to the naked eye.
Only you and your physician will know. While it may take up to a year before the
results have fully settled in, the improvements will be visible within a week or
two.

Family and friends may have some surprising reactions in the meantime. The
difference might not be noticed by some while others could react negatively. If
characteristics that define ethnicity are being altered, this could lead to a
negative reaction. In any case, the patient needs to be comfortable with their
decision. If the patient is satisfied with their results, this is all that
matters.

AWAKE RHINOPLASTY SANTA BARBARA

It is possible to avoid the risks associated with general anesthesia by using
twilight sedation in conjunction with local anaesthetic. The patient will notice
the difference as soon as the surgery is completed. The first two days of
post-operative recovery are typically spent overcoming the effects of general
anesthesia.. Time that may otherwise be used in the healing process is being
wasted here. When the heart and circulatory system are affected by general
anesthesia, it might hide the severity of hematoma, the internal bleeding that
occurs after surgery. This could lead to a dangerous situation for the patient
who is recuperating.

With less bleeding and less scarring, an awake rhinoplasty frequently yields
better results than other techniques and a more enhanced appearance.

CLOSED RHINOPLASTY SANTA BARBARA

If you’re unhappy with the way your nose looks, you may be seeking for a
technique to change it without scars. A closed rhinoplasty is a cosmetic
operation in which incisions are made within the nostrils and nose, resulting in
little scarring on the exterior.

Closed rhinoplasty, unlike more conventional open rhinoplasty, is often done to
reshape the tip of the nose, shorten the nose, or remove a bump or dorsal hump.
The nose of the ideal candidate would be symmetrical, with most of the reshaping
taking place on the bump or tip.

ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY SANTA BARBARA

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty for ethnic
patients involves altering the nose in order to better fit a patient’s face
while preserving their ethnic identity. This process also takes into account the
patient’s distinctive ethnic traits on the outside and inside of their nose.
Make sure your cosmetic surgeon is experienced in doing non-Caucasian
rhinoplasty if you are Hispanic, African American, Asian, or Indian.

CELEBRITY RHINOPLASTY SURGEON SANTA BARBARA

You’ve probably noticed how many actresses, artists, and socialites have had a
rhinoplasty or “nose job” if you’ve ever looked up images of celebrities before
and after cosmetic surgery. Rhinoplasty is routinely one of the most popular and
requested operations for both men and women at our Santa Barbara cosmetic
surgery center. It’s a transformational treatment that achieves enormous results
with little tweaks, so it’s no wonder it’s as popular in Hollywood as it is in
the rest of the country.

RHINOPLASTY COST IN SANTA BARBARA

Rhinoplasty procedures differ greatly from one individual to the next. Some
operations take longer and are more difficult, hence they are more costly. The

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS A RHINOPLASTY?

A rhinoplasty is the accepted medical term which describes the process for nasal
correction and reconstruction. Also referred to as the nose job, nose surgery or
nasal reshaping, this operation is designed to correct and enhance facial
symmetry through proportionality to improve the overall appearance. It can be
either an open rhinoplasty or closed rhinoplasty. The net result is to improve
self-esteem and an increase facial balance. There are a variety of aesthetic
concerns that can be addressed through the rhinoplasty which include: - A nose
profile that is too large - Having a large bulbous tip - A prominent bump on the
bridge of the nose - A nose which is either too wide or narrow - A nasal tip
that needs to be brought up or down - A greater improvement needed beyond a nose
filler Rhinoplasty is a popular surgery that according to the American Society
of Plastic Surgeons almost 220,000 rhinoplasties are performed annually, which
makes it one of the most common aesthetic plastic surgery procedures done in the
United States. It is common knowledge that because of aesthetic skill required,
the rhinoplasty is considered the most difficult cosmetic surgeries to perform
so it is important to choose the right physician. Whether it is the size, a bump
on the bride, a large profile, or the angle of the tip, consensus on self-image
concerns by the majority of people and young adults is typically related to
unhappiness about the nose. Because it is such a delicate procedure with so many
unknowns, it is important to perform extensive due diligence when selecting an
experienced rhinoplasty surgeon.

WHAT QUESTIONS SHOULD I ASK MY PLASTIC SURGEON DURING THE CONSULTATION?

Make sure to ask the following questions about the rhinoplasty: - Are you
board-certified? - How many rhinoplasty procedures have you performed and is it
a significant part of your practice? - How many of these surgeries to you do
annually? - What is the revision rate? - What is currently your most utilized
rhinoplasty technique? - Do you handle revisions if I need one in 12 months? -
Do you use morphing software so I can see a simulation? - May I see before and
after photos of your patients? - Which medical societies are you a member? - How
do you rate my goals in terms of being realistic? Dr. Robert W. Sheffield, M.D.,
F.A.C.S. is a Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon practicing in Santa Barbara,
California. Board-certified, he received his training at aesthetic plastic
surgery training at the prestigious University of Texas Southwestern Medical
School in Dallas, Texas.

WHERE WILL THE SURGERY BE PERFORMED?

Plastic Surgery will be performed in an accredited surgical center. For cost and
convenience’s sake, these surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis in most
instances. If the procedure is more complex, a short inpatient stay is required.

WHAT ARE THE ANESTHESIA OPTIONS?

Local anesthesia offers the a light sedation. The nose and its surrounding area
are going to be numbed. A general anesthetic gives the ability to sleep
comfortably while the procedure is taking place. General is also used for
safety’s sake for the majority of these procedures. We use local in the office
for all of our surgeries.

WHAT HAPPENS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE SURGERY?

The patient‘s face is going to be puffy and will experience soreness for at
least 24 hours after the procedure. Pain medication is going to be prescribed by
the physician to alleviate this discomfort. The patient should plan to remain in
bed and keep their head elevated on the first day.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PROCESS LIKE?

Most patients should be able to resume their normal routine within a week’s
time. Feeling completely normal, on the other hand, may take several weeks.
Detailed guidelines on the strenuous physical activity must be followed to the
letter. As a general rule of thumb, any exercise that will cause a sudden
increase to your blood pressure should be avoided for two to three weeks. Do not
hit your nose or allow it to become sunburned. Exercise caution when using
cosmetics. Contact lenses can be worn after the plastic surgery procedure and
wearing glasses could be more a tad more difficult. Once the splint has been
removed, the nose will still need to heal. Patients who need to wear glasses
right away must tape them to their forehead or obtain a device that allows for
their glasses to rest comfortably on their cheeks. Frequent visits are going to
be made to our offices in the months after your surgery has taken place. This
gives us the chance to closely monitor your healing process. If there are any
unusual symptoms taking place or you have any questions about the do’s and
dont’s, be sure to call your physician right away.

WILL THE SURGERY GIVE ME NOTICABLE SCARS?

If the surgery is performed inside of the patient‘s nose, no visible scarring
will take place. The “open” technique leads to a small amount of scarring but
none of it will be visible to the naked eye.
