Located in the heart of Sundance, the Crook County Museum offers an immersive experience into the rich history of northeast Wyoming. With exhibits ranging from Native American artifacts to the infamous Sundance Kid and the Wild West era, our extensive collection provides a fascinating glimpse into the vibrant past of this unique region. NESTLED AMONGST THE BLACK HILLS AND GRASSLANDS OF NORTHEAST WYOMING IS CROOK COUNTY. History knows no borders and this small piece of the state lays out a welcome mat of western culture and unique history. In this area of the west; ranching, outlaws, Native Americans and mining not only define the past but sustain the present. As you walk through the Crook County Museum you will be taken back in time. The 7000 artifacts in the vignettes of the exhibits keep you wondering what’s around the next corner. From the home site that you can envision yourself sitting on the floor in front of the radio listening to your favorite radio show as your family gets ready for bed or waiting to be called for dinner, or imagine yourself at a highstake card game at Moses Annenberg’s Ranch A. You will be pulled into the gun vault to see the collection of century’s worth of guns. Then around the corner you get to see the original 1887 courtroom furnishings that the Sundance Kid and many other outlaws were tried in and read the grisly stories, as you wander you pass the 1874 Custer expedition of the Black Hills all in Miniature, all 110 soldiers, horses, tents and original artifacts from the trail. Down the hall you get to know our local doctors and country schools that protected and educated our citizens. THE NATURAL HISTORY OF CROOK COUNTY IS SHOWN IN EXHIBITS OF GEOLOGY, BOTANY, AND BIOLOGY WITH SAMPLES AND SPECIMENS FOR ALL AGES TO ENJOY. Around another corner you get to experience the Native American life before the white settlers invaded with dioramas of Bison Jump sites, tools they used every day, and the bone evidence that was left behind that has told the archaeologists their life stories. Your adventure continues down the hall to livery stable barn where the sounds of the blacksmith tirelessly forges and works on hot steel while an impatient horse neighs in the background. A few steps more puts you in a ranch bunkhouse where the hired men relaxed after a hard day of branding and sorting the stock. The mercantile and barber are the last stop on this adventure, you will see authentic dry goods and wares for the everyday survival in Crook County in the early days. A trunk of clothes and mounted saddles invite everybody to step back in time for a photo op. Come on in to the Crook County Museum in downtown Sundance located in the Historical stone 1923 school right next to our city park which has a statue of the Sundance Kid sitting in jail, have a seat with him and become part of our west.
