CROOK COUNTY MUSEUM

Step back in time and explore the rich history and vibrant culture of northeast
Wyoming at the Crook County Museum. Discover the captivating stories of
ranching, outlaws, Native Americans, and more through our extensive exhibits and
artifacts.

Located in the heart of Sundance, the Crook County Museum offers an immersive
experience into the rich history of northeast Wyoming. With exhibits ranging
from Native American artifacts to the infamous Sundance Kid and the Wild West
era, our extensive collection provides a fascinating glimpse into the vibrant
past of this unique region.

NESTLED AMONGST THE BLACK HILLS AND GRASSLANDS OF NORTHEAST WYOMING IS CROOK
COUNTY.

History knows no borders and this small piece of the state lays out a welcome
mat of western culture and unique history. In this area of the west; ranching,
outlaws, Native Americans and mining not only define the past but sustain the
present. As you walk through the Crook County Museum you will be taken back in
time. The 7000 artifacts in the vignettes of the exhibits keep you wondering
what’s around the next corner.  From the home site that you can envision
yourself sitting on the floor in front of the radio listening to your favorite
radio show as your family gets ready for bed or waiting to be called for dinner,
or imagine yourself at a highstake card game at Moses Annenberg’s Ranch A.  You
will be pulled into the gun vault to see the collection of century’s worth of
guns.  Then around the corner you get to see the original 1887 courtroom
furnishings that the Sundance Kid and many other outlaws were tried in and read
the grisly stories, as you wander you pass the 1874 Custer expedition of the
Black Hills all in Miniature, all 110 soldiers, horses, tents and original
artifacts from the trail. Down the hall you get to know our local doctors and
country schools that protected and educated our citizens.

THE NATURAL HISTORY OF CROOK COUNTY IS SHOWN IN EXHIBITS OF GEOLOGY, BOTANY, AND
BIOLOGY WITH SAMPLES AND SPECIMENS FOR ALL AGES TO ENJOY.

Around another corner you get to experience the Native American life before the
white settlers invaded with dioramas of Bison Jump sites, tools they used every
day, and the bone evidence that was left behind that has told the archaeologists
their life stories.  Your adventure continues down the hall to livery stable
barn where the sounds of the blacksmith tirelessly forges and works on hot steel
while an impatient horse neighs in the background. A few steps more puts you in
a ranch bunkhouse where the hired men relaxed after a hard day of branding and
sorting the stock.  The mercantile and barber are the last stop on this
adventure, you will see authentic dry goods and wares for the everyday survival
in Crook County in the early days. A trunk of clothes and mounted saddles invite
everybody to step back in time for a photo op.  Come on in to the Crook County
Museum in downtown Sundance located in the Historical stone 1923 school right
next to our city park which has a statue of the Sundance Kid sitting in jail,
have a seat with him and become part of our west.
