ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Peter Baker and Susan Glasser were the Moscow bureau chiefs for the Washington
Post from January 2001 to November 2004 and were responsible for covering the
countries of the former Soviet Union. Baker is the author of the New York Times
bestseller The Breach: Inside the Impeachment and Trial of William Jefferson
Clinton and is now a White House correspondent for the Post. Glasser previously
covered national politics and later terrorism for the Post and now is assistant
managing editor for national news. They live in Washington, D.C.

Peter Baker is the chief White House correspondent for the New York Times
responsible for covering President Trump and his administration and a political
analyst for MSNBC. He has previously covered three other presidents for the
Times and Washington Post -- Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He
is the author of six books, including "The Breach: Inside the Impeachment and
Trial of William Jefferson Clinton" and "Days of Fire: Bush and Cheney in the

I checked this book out from the library, and I must say that this book's
portrayal about Vladimir Putin and his family life is outrageous and not true.
There's not a lick of truth to anything this author has to say about how
Vladimir relates to his family. I suspect that Vladimir's enemies wrote this
book.See my review for Vladimir's memoir First Person for more on this. As I
read the book I felt I read a carefully calculated presentation with an agenda,
and that agenda is not to tell the truth, but to defame the character of
Vladimir Putin.I did not feel I was reading a biography, but a piece of
propaganda. The book insulted my intelligence.

For several reasons, this is not an easy read. Expansive is a good description.
I was fairly naive about Putin. Seeing how he has directed Russian forces in
their merciless attack on Ukraine was a catalyst for purchasing the book. A
better understanding of Russian history, the impact of KGB influence as well as
Russian war methodology has provided me with a better understanding of this
ongoing tragedy in Ukraine. There is a certain parallel between Hitler and
"Peace in our time" Chamberlain. Very profitable read.

First book I chose to read about Putin and Russia. Labored halfway through it.
Seems very well written. My very limited knowledge on Russia held me back. I
turned to Masha Gessen's "Man Without a Face". It is difficult too.
May eventually get back to Kremlin Rising.

What surprises me most about this book is that it was allowed to be written at
all. The authors, a husband and wife team, were Moscow bureau chiefs for the
Washington Post in Russia from January 2001 to November 2004 and their reporting
background shows through as they thoroughly footnoted and referenced their facts
throughout the book.
It does not paint a pretty picture of a country that has been dominated by a
brutal state centered government most of last century and Czarist regimes prior
to that. After reading this portrayal of an increasing dominance once again of
the State over the people and how the State totally controls the media; the
court system; the educational system; the elections; and any potential voices of
opposition I finished the book with a more profound appreciation of what our
founding fathers intended to do with the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of
Rights.
Personally, I think this book should be read by any American who doesn't
undertand the crushing effect that a State dominated government has upon the
common person and then keep their eyes open to the legislation and powers being
increasingly granted to our Federal Government under the guise of protecting us
against terrorism. The fact that Bush and Putin are friends becomes clear when
you realize that they both share the same goal of increased power to the Central
Government giving them a basic common belief system.
The book itself makes it clear that such a scenario paints a very bleak and
oppressive way of life for the average citizen under a State dominated regime
which is reflected in the fact that Russia has the 2nd highest suicide rate in
the world.
As Baker and Glasser point out, the former KGB Putin was a relative unknown and
was basically manipulated into office through a state controlled media and
political strong arm tactics after Yeltsin chose him as his successor (Or was it
that Yeltsin had no choice himself?). Once into office Putin has consolidated
the power of the State and Kremlin at the expense of the people's freedoms under
what he calls "controlled Democracy".
In the chapter "Scam of the Year", Baker and Glasser detail how Putin and his
cadre of siloviki (former military and KGB officers)stole Mikhail Kodorkovsky's
Yukos Oil (Russia's largest oil company and Russia's richest man) and
manipulated it to State control using trumped up and exaggerated tax evasion
charges. Khodorkovsky's real sin was open resistance to Putin and the increasing
State dominance after a brief period of free marketism under Yeltsin.
All in all, a good and realistic account of why governments should have limited
powers and influence over private citizens lives although I don't think this is
the message the author's intended. I would suggest that anyone leaning towards a
Socialist form of government read this book and take heed. It doesn't work and
this book makes it clear why (although again I don't think it was written to
convey that message).
By the way, all of this return to State dominance in Russia was predicted in the
80's and early 90's by a former long time KGB higher up, Anatoliy Golitsyn, in
his books New Lies for Old and The Perestroika Deception. Golitsyn sat in on the
planning of this illusion of Russia's conversion to "Democracy" and acts as a
fly on the wall to the insider deceptions which ensued. I would also recommend
these books to those seeking the truth about how things work which we rarely, if
ever, are given.

Russia is getting more and more autocratic with time. The "security/stability"
mentality is winning out vs. the "Freedom of the individual". Putin has gained
much more power since this book was written. After visiting Russia I was struck
by how differently the Russian people view Putin. The rural areas seemed to
support him more than the metropolitan areas (in general). The writers of this
book compare how the Russians living in the rural areas are much different than
those living in Moscow or St. Petersburg. In the rural areas they miss their
state pensions and the stability they had financially.

It's a good read and it comes together well with what several other books
describe about the transition from USSR to Putin's Russia. It's a good
description of the mechanisms that ensured the raise of Putin's
authoritarianism, and it describes in terms I can recognize how 'elections'
happen in such a regime. It was chilling to read about Nemtsov, as this book was
completed before his assassination.
To the people who gave this book one star - sorry, but living a few years in
Russia with Western-level incomes will never give you a path to understanding
what is going on there. Many people are super-rich in Russia and surely live a
life protected from worry, but this does not mean the country's political,
social, and economic systems are not rotten to the core. Large discrepancies
between the top and the bottom of the society (both in terms of income and in
terms of outlook onto the world) were always the case in Russia regardless of
the Potemkin type of facade (tsarist, communist, putinist). Pick up a couple of
books describing the Gulag - both of the physical and mental kind. Most Russians
can't even fathom how to think independently and what life is in a society where
The Party does not watch over you in every aspect and corner of your life.

This is an exceptionally thorough, equally depressing, account of the rise of
Vladimir Nothing to Vladimir Something in the dysfunctional political
environment that emerged in Russia after the fall of Communism. The authors
demonstrate their reporters' skills in hunting down the dreary details of starts
and stops to some kind of representative government, all undermined by the
cunning Putin. But this is not a study of political maneuvering alone, though
there is plenty of it. It provides graphic episodes of dysfunction in a system
that has no accountability, and a person in Putin who fully understands it and
exploits it. It is a timely read as we watch his machinations in Ukraine reveal
the true person the authors alerted us to through everthing from the Theater
massacre to Grozny. The hardest part of the read is to keep in memory all of the
many actors, large and small, as the authors throw off their last names as if we
knew them well. This reader had to stop occasionally and go back to recall who
these characters were, as so many are completely unfamiliar to us. But it's an
excellent and timely read as Mr. Putin presses on in his quest to recover the
Lost Empire.

The book is quite well researched but it ends in 2008 and its predictions,
especially on population, have not happened and, what is worse for the poor
Russians, is that Putin has more power than Stalin, although he doesn't appear
to be killing as many. With a population of 140 million and a gdp similar to
Spain he spends inordinate sums on poor quality weapons, uses untrained
conscripts and has got himself involved in several wars which he is losing.
