CENTRESTAGE WEATHERS THE STORM TO DELIVER FASHION AND FLAIR

Hong Kong’s leading fashion event overcame Typhoon Yagi to put on successful and
stylish shows, with exhibitors reporting sunny prospects.


Whatever the weather, nothing casts a cloud over Asia’s leading fashion expo.

The top cities in the catwalk world, including Paris, Milan, New York and
London, hold their prestigious fashion weeks in September – with Hong Kong
gamely joining in. At the start of the month, its premier fashion event,
Centrestage, returned to its usual venue, the Hong Kong Convention and
Exhibition Centre, to showcase more than 250 brands from 18 countries and
regions.


This year, the timing of the four‑day fair, organised by the Hong Kong Trade
Development Council (HKTDC), turned out to be somewhat unfortunate, coinciding
with the arrival of Typhoon Yagi. The adverse weather meant that at one point
the show had to be temporarily suspended.


To their credit, the organisers took the setback in their stride, extending the
fair’s opening times on the remaining days and encouraging would‑be attendees to
use a hybrid platform called Exhibition+, through which buyers and exhibitors
could connect and interact online.


Some exhibitors still felt the impact, however. Hui Min Poon, Manager of Yeomama
Batik, a cheongsam brand from Singapore that makes Chinese‑style clothes in
batik print, underlined the effect of the storm, saying: “Sales were a bit below
expectations for us because the typhoon happened in the middle of the fair. But
nevertheless, we have some potential buyers and wholesalers with whom we have
set up meetings through this event.”


Wendy Chan from Oud Design Store, an artisanal jewellery brand based in Lai Chi
Kok, was somewhat more upbeat, saying: “We had exhibited last year too, and it
was affected by bad weather as well. But this year, I still feel kind of
confident. We were hoping to get wholesale buyers, which so far we haven’t got,
but we have many B2C customers walking in and buying a few pieces of jewellery,
which is great for spreading awareness of our brand.”


Sunny forecast ahead


Despite the meteorological mayhem, Centrestage still proved to be as popular and
successful as ever. It attracted more than 8,500 buyers from countries and
regions including Thailand, Malaysia, Japan and Taiwan. Research carried out by
the HKTDC at the end of the fair indicated that 34.8% of exhibitors had a sunny
outlook – in contrast with the weather – and expected sales to increase in the
next six to 12 months from potential buyer leads obtained at the event.


One exhibitor certainly displaying this bright outlook was Iris Ramos, the
Founder of Duxton, a Singapore‑based brand exhibiting under the Singapore
Fashion Council. Describing what her company had achieved at the show, Ramos
said: “Many buyers visited our booth and showed interest in our brand.
Currently, five international stores have confirmed their intention to carry our
products. The fair has significantly increased our exposure and helped us gain a
better understanding of the market.”


Yeomama Batik’s Hui Min Poon underlined that positive message, saying: “The
advantage of a platform like Centrestage is that it’s a great way to connect to
people in Hong Kong who might resonate with a modern cheongsam brand like ours.”


However, the success and significance of Centrestage shouldn’t just be measured
by sales and orders, but also by the glitz and glamour surrounding the event.
The tone of the fair was set by a blockbusting preview show from top Hong Kong
designer Robert Wun, and topped off with the Hong Kong Young Fashion Designers’
Contest featuring local design talent.


Both shows attracted scores of A‑list celebrities including actress Fan
Bingbing, Singaporean fashion icon Yoyo Cao and music stars Josie Ho, Kelly
Chen, Panther Chan and Kaho Hung – a sure sign that, whatever the weather, Hong
Kong is in the front row when it comes to fashion.


The 2024 edition of Centrestage took place from 4-7 September at the Hong Kong
Convention and Exhibition Centre.
