ABOUT S-VYASA

S-VYASA is the world’s first institution
that provides higher education in Yoga from Under
Graduate courses to PhD.

It is the only institute with over 700 published papers on the scientifically
proven benefits of Yoga on the human body, down to the cellular level. S-VYASA’s
methodology has cured thousands of people worldwide of chronic diseases.

DISEASE SPECIFIC YOGA:

Heart Diseases
PCOS
Asthma
Depression
Hypertension

WHY THIS MOVEMENT IS NEEDED RIGHT NOW:

In India, cases of chronic diseases such as hypertension, anxiety, diabetes,
heart conditions and more continue to rise. Yoga, Ayurveda experts, doctors and
scientists have attributed this to lifestyle changes. How serious is this
problem?

Nearly 5.8 million people (WHO report, 2015) die from heart and lung diseases,
stroke, cancer and diabetes every year. In other words, 1 in 4 Indians has a
risk of dying from a Non communicable Disease before they reach the age of 70.
Physical inactivity, unhealthy diets (diets low in fruit, vegetables, and whole
grains, but high in salt and fat), tobacco use (smoking, second hand smoke, and
smokeless tobacco), and the harmful use of alcohol are the main behavioural risk
factors for the rise of Non-communicable Diseases.

Unhealthy diets and a lack of physical activity may show up in people as raised
blood pressure, increased blood glucose, elevated blood lipids and obesity.

HEART DISEASES

Heart Diseases are becoming increasingly common.
The root cause?
Diet, lack of physical exercise, bad habits and stress. But it’s the mind that
is in control of all these things. The management of Heart Diseases therefore
must include mastery over the mind, the pursuit of balance, committing to
changes in behaviour patterns, diet, exercise.

There are two major aspects of cardiovascular disease: Hypertension and Ischemic
Heart Disease/ Coronary Artery Disease.

S-VYASA has created a disease-specific yoga module, which includes varied
techniques starting from simple loosening exercises called Sushma Vyayama*, to
breathing exercises, asanas, pranayama, relaxation techniques and meditation.
S-VYASA has also conducted one of the longest follow-up studies on heart disease
in the world on how yoga can benefit individuals who undergo coronary bypass
grafting. It was done in collaboration with Narayan Hrunalaya*, one of the most
prominent centres for Cardiology.

YOGA FOR HEART HEALTH

The heart should neither be too activated, nor too relaxed. Yoga helps in
creating balance. When you practice Yoga for heart health, you train the heart
to work efficiently in extreme situations so that your heart regulates blood
supply throughout the body. Yoga includes exercise, stress reduction, and works
to keep the heart constant load under check.

PCOS

PCOS is a condition that is currently disrupting the lives of thousands of women
across India. The root cause? Mental stress, lifestyle, junk food, inactivity
and harmful habits. The real root however is the imbalance created at the mind
level. Imbalances triggered by stress, affecting the Hypothalamus and
subsequently upsetting the menstrual cycle. PCOS has many symptoms such as
obesity, acne, excessive facial hair or masculine distribution of hair growth.
If left untreated it can lead to further issues like pregnancy complications,
diabetes, cancer and other disorders.

The PCOS program is designed to help you add physical exercise to your day to
day routine, include asanas, surya namaskars, relaxation techniques. It
recommends adhering to a Sattvic diet, the benefits of which has been
demonstrated in S-VYASA’s research. It suggests quitting smoking and drinking to
experience accelerated healing from PCOS. But before all of this is the work of
reducing mental stress. The starting point of so many chronic diseases.

YOGA FOR PCOS

The following Asanas are beneficial for the treatment of PCOS: Sethu Bandha
Sarvangasana, Surya Namaskar, Bhujangasana, Naukasana, Kapalbhati Pranayama,
Savasana.

ASTHMA

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases globally. Many asthmatics
report worsening of symptoms with stress.

There’s obstruction in the airways, leading to excessive wheezing, coughing and
dyspnoea – difficult or laboured breathing. Symptoms may be worse at night, and
patients typically wake up in the early morning hours. Prodromal symptoms may
precede an attack, with itching under the chin, discomfort between the scapulae,
or inexplicable fear.

YOGA FOR ASTHMA:

Yoga leads to a correction of the bodily disturbances. It works on an emotional,
psychological and vital energy level. Integrated Yoga Therapy uses a mix of
techniques to reach a state of total silence or calmness of mind. A state of
deep relaxation and rest.

Yogic breathing techniques developed by S-VYASA help the lungs to maximize their
capacity, whereas, asanas, DRT, Cyclic meditation help repair the damage. This
does not only imply healing from physical damage but also relaxation of the body
and mind. The key is to eliminate the stress factor that causes all
psychosomatic diseases.

DEPRESSION

Depression is a tricky condition. It’s not always easy to understand the cause.
That is why it’s healing journey has to work at multiple levels. Question is,
how do we define depression? Major depression is defined as a depressed mood
experienced on a daily basis for a minimum duration of two weeks. An episode of
depression may be characterized by sadness, indifference, apathy, or
irritability and is usually associated with changes in sleep pattern,
appetite,  and  weight,  motor  agitation , fatigue, impaired concentration and
decision-making, feelings of shame or guilt, and thoughts of death.

Patients with depression have a profound loss of pleasure in all enjoyable
activities, exhibit early morning awakening, feel that the dysphoric mood state
is qualitatively different from sadness, and often notice a diurnal variation in
mood (worse in morning hours).

YOGA FOR DEPRESSION:

S-VYASA's approach to treating Depression is based on the Panchakosha concept.
The following practices are helpful for alleviating Depression.

Annamaya Kosa level - Asanas, breathing practices, kriyas, deep relaxation
technique are supposed to work at the level of Annamaya Kosa. This is the
physical level. The gross body has been formed by 'anna' (food), therefore it is
named as Annamaya Kosa.

Pranamaya Kosa level - Pranayama and breathing practices work at Pranamaya kosa
level. This is at the level of breath, vital energy or life force.

Manomaya Kosa level – Nurturing the right emotional state with the help of
devotional sessions, Om meditation, cyclic meditation and more. This affects the
level of the mind.

Vijnanamaya Kosa level - Lectures on Yoga, Vedanta philosophy, counseling,
Happiness analysis, and Maitri Milan. This is work done on the level of wisdom.

HYPERTENSION

Hypertension is an uninvited guest in the lives of an ever growing number of
Indians. What is Hypertension? Abnormally high blood pressure, combined with
high psychological stress is known as Hypertension. This chronic disease doubles
the risk of cardiovascular ailments, including coronary heart disease,
congestive heart failure, ischemic and haemorrhagic stroke, renal failure, and
peripheral arterial disease.

To accelerate healing, S-VYASA suggests a Sattvic diet including fresh fruits,
milk, sprouts, soup, and an increased water intake. The benefits of this diet is
increase in strength and stamina, restoration of health and lightness of the
body.

The practice of Kriyās like Vaman dhauti (water without salt), Laghu shankha
prakshālana (a Yogic stomach cleansing technique) is also recommended.

These are to be supported by breathing exercises like hands in and out, hand
stretch breathing,  dog breathing on chair, rabbit breathing on chair, sectional
breathing to name a few.

YOGA FOR HYPERTENSION:

Yoga works at different levels of body and mind complexities. Yogäsanas like
Balasana (Child Pose), Sukhasana (Easy Pose), Shavasana (Corpse Pose),
Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), Sethu Bandha Sarvangsana (Bridge Pose) are known to
be beneficial for Hypertension.
