At The King’s Fund we have been running Athena, our leadership development
programme for women, for more than 20 years and we are currently in the process
of redesigning the content.  

This popular programme enables leaders who identify as women to work through and
apply the Transforming Experience Framework, which explores how people can more
authentically lead themselves, their teams and within systems and is used to
understand the complexities and ambiguities of experience within organisational
life. 

Given the complex leadership challenges that have arisen following the Covid-19
pandemic, we are re-designing the content to best support women (and those who
identify as women) in this new and challenging environment.  

As part of this process, we are running four workshops that will give
participants an opportunity to work through some of the concepts from the
programme, consider how the learning might apply in their individual context and
hear from women in leadership on what it means to be a leader in 2022.

ARE THESE WORKSHOPS FOR ME?

These development workshops are designed for leaders and aspiring leaders (who
identify as women) working across the health and care system and beyond. We are
keen to engage with women working in a variety of sectors and roles, with wide
experiences drawn from different ethnicities, backgrounds and geographies.  


WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

The workshops will offer you the opportunity to:   

 * connect with a diverse group of women 
 * learn about some of the central ideas and concepts in the Athena course and
   consider how they might apply in your own context   
 * have a wide-ranging and stimulating conversation about women’s leadership and
   the challenges and opportunities women face in communities and the workplace
   in 2022   
 * explore the role and experiences of women in the workplace, and the role of
   men (and other women) in contributing to a culture where women can thrive.  

Each session will take place online and is designed for up to 25 participants,
allowing for an engaging and interactive experience. 

Facilitated by Mandip Randhawa and Simon Newitt, each workshop will feature a
guest speaker and set out to explore a different provocative question or issue
related to women’s leadership in the 21st century. The sessions will offer a
rich mix of lived experience, development content, peer discussion and learning.

DEBUNKING THE CONFIDENCE DEFICIT: WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT AND THE FUTURE OF WORK

With Lydia Morgan and Diana Galloway, Young Women’s Trust

Friday 25 February 2022, 1.00–4.30pm 

In this conversation we will explore how a focus on women’s self-confidence and
self-improvement has served to obscure shared experiences of inequality in the
workplace, letting organisations ‘off the hook’ for their culture and practices.
We’ll consider what women want and need from work – and each other – at all
stages of their life and career in the health and care system to enable them to
thrive in, and not simply endure, patriarchal organisational structures and
cultures.  

Lydia is currently the Head of Participation at Young Women’s Trust. She has
worked for the charity since 2014, adding to the wealth of experience in
participation and involvement that she has accumulated in the voluntary sector
over the past 16 years. Lydia’s greatest passion is to empower people to have a
say in the decisions that affect their lives and at Young Women’s Trust she is
able to live this passion daily in a job she loves. In her current role, she
ensures that young women’s views and experiences directly inform the charity’s
work. 

Diana manages projects for social impact and currently does so as a Senior
Participation Officer at Young Women's Trust. With over eight years of
experience working with young people in the education and charity sector in the
UK, Germany and Italy, she is passionate about equipping young people with
skills to speak up, using the arts for impact and accessibility. Diana is
currently managing projects regarding digital inclusion, training young women in
facilitation skills and co-designing workshops with people in the Young Women's
Trust network.

WORKSHOP 2

PANDEMIC AND PATRIARCHY: WHAT DOES FEMINIST LEADERSHIP LOOK LIKE IN AN UNCERTAIN
WORLD? 

With Sam Allen Chief Executive Designate, North East and North Cumbria
Integrated Care Board

Wednesday 2 March 2022, 9.00am–12.30pm 

In this workshop we will examine how women take up their leadership in the
health and care system in order to transform it. The challenges of the Covid-19
pandemic and climate crisis creates uncertainty and volatility for leaders.
We’ll explore whether feminist leadership holds the key to navigating some of
the most complex challenges facing the current and future health and care
system. 

Sam Allen is an experienced NHS chief executive with a background in operational
management and leadership.  From 31 January 2022, Sam will be the Chief
Executive Designate for the North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board.
Sam is a Chartered Manager and Companion of the Chartered Management Institute
and Chair of the NHS Confederation Health and Care Women Leaders Network.

WORKSHOP 3

A WOMAN’S PLACE IS IN THE REVOLUTION

With Farah Nazeer, Chief Executive, Women's Aid

Workshop three is now sold out.

Wednesday 23 March, 10.00am–1.30pm  

In this workshop, we will consider the ways in which gender inequities continue
to shape life chances and health outcomes for women, and explore intersectional
perspectives on sisterhood and allyship. How can women (and men) work together
in coalition to disrupt, dismantle and remake the health and care system?

A policy, advocacy, public affairs, campaigns and communications professional,
Farah Nazeer has more than 20 years’ professional executive management
experience in the voluntary sector. Much of Farah’s work has been on women’s
rights, and she has campaigned at local, national, and international levels.
 Farah joined Women’s Aid as Chief Executive in March 2021.

Previously, Farah was Deputy Director of Advocacy at Action Aid UK, working to
end gender-based violence and ensure women’s economic rights. Before joining
Action Aid, Farah worked for as Special Adviser on Advocacy at Lumos.  She
previously worked for Bond, the UK membership organisation for non-governmental
organisations, where she was Director of Policy and Campaigns and then Joint
Interim Chief Executive. Farah has also worked at the Motor Neurone Disease
Association and at the Women's Institute. She was a local authority councillor
for almost a decade working on local service provision, health, environment, and
accountability.

WORKSHOP 4

BEYOND CAREERS: CAN WORK BE A SOURCE OF HEALTH, COMMUNITY AND FLOURISHING FOR
WOMEN? 

Thursday 28 April, 9.30am–1.00pm   

With Poppy Jaman OBE, CEO of the City Mental Health Alliance

Workshop four is now sold out.

The final workshop will explore the transpersonal in work, and consider deeper
themes of identity, purpose, and community as wellsprings of mental, emotional
and spiritual health and wellbeing. We'll consider the ways in which a gendered
world of work can undermine and nourish these aspects of ourselves, and imagine
what a more soulful future of work could look like. 

Poppy Jaman OBE is an internationally respected mental health advocate, national
policy adviser and social entrepreneur. A global voice of authority on workplace
mental health, she is the Chief Executive of the City Mental Health Alliance, a
coalition of multinationals working together to create a culture of good mental
health and build a global community influencing change and stigma. Poppy is also
a director at Re=Balance and a trustee for The Centre of Mental Health.

Please note, there is a £20 plus VAT surcharge to cover the cost of processing
invoices. This is in addition to the ticket price and will be added to your
invoice. There is one invoice fee per order, not per ticket.  There is no charge
for paying by debit or credit card.
