TAKE A LOOK AT TRENDING TOPICS FOR TODAY, NOV. 14:

MATT PETGRAVE

Police in England arrested a man Tuesday on suspicion of manslaughter in the
death of American ice hockey player Adam Johnson, whose neck was cut by a skate
during a game.

Johnson, 29, was playing for the Nottingham Panthers against the Sheffield
Steelers on Oct. 28 when he was struck by an opponent's skate blade in the Elite
Ice Hockey League game at Sheffield's Utilita Arena.

South Yorkshire Police did not name the suspect or provide his age. He was in
police custody.

Matt Petgrave, 31, who plays for Sheffield, was the other player involved in the
grisly incident that reverberated around the hockey community and led to moments
of silence in the NHL.

Video of the incident shows Johnson skating with the puck toward the Steelers
net.

MAN ARRESTED FOR MANSLAUGHTER IN DEATH OF HOCKEY PLAYER WHOSE NECK WAS CUT WITH
SKATE BLADE DURING GAME

football practice in Orchard Park, N.Y., May 24, 2022. The Buffalo Bills fired
offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2023, with the Josh
Allen-led attack stagnating over a six-week stretch and the three-time defending
AFC East champions falling further out of the playoff picture.

Witnessing a troubling surge in turnovers and a worrisome drop in quarterback
Josh Allen's confidence provided Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott little
choice but to fire offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey on Tuesday.

The move came 10 weeks into the season and a day after the three-time defending
AFC East champions dropped to 5-5 to fall further out of the playoff picture
following a sloppy, turnover-filled 24-22 loss to the Denver Broncos.

“We need to be a confident offensive football team, and find consistent
production, and that’s really what it came down to,” McDermott said. “I'm as
frustrated as anyone out there. We're trying to win one game at a time right
now, and we get a chance to right the ship.”

He then defended the timing of the decision in making the move entering a short
week with the Bills having only five days to prepare before hosting the division
rival New York Jets (4-5) on Sunday.

MARKWAYNE MULLIN

A congressional hearing devolved into an angry confrontation between a senator
and a witness on Tuesday after Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma
challenged Sean O’Brien, the president of the International Brotherhood of
Teamsters, to “stand your butt up” and settle longstanding differences right
there in the room.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the chairman of the Senate panel that was holding
the hearing, yelled at Mullin to sit down after he challenged O’Brien to a
fight. Mullin had stood up from his seat at the dais and appeared to start
taking his ring off.

“This is the time, this is the place,” Mullin told O’Brien after reading a
series of critical tweets O’Brien had sent about him in the past. “If you want
to run your mouth, we can be two consenting adults. We can finish it here.”

ISRAELI MILITARY FORCES RAID GAZA'S LARGEST HOSPITAL IN OPERATION AGAINST HAMAS

The Israeli military says its forces are raiding Gaza’s largest hospital, the
site of a lengthy standoff with the Hamas militant group. The army surrounded
Shifa Hospital as part of its ground offensive. Israeli authorities claim Hamas
conceals military operations in the hospital, a claim denied by Hamas and
medical staff. But with hundreds of patients and medical personnel inside, the
Israeli military has refrained from entering. Early Wednesday, the army said its
forces were carrying out “a precise and targeted" operation there against Hamas.
It gave no further details but said it was taking steps to avoid harm to
civilians.

BIDEN SAYS HIS GOAL FOR XI MEETING IS TO GET US-CHINA COMMUNICATIONS BACK TO
'NORMAL'

President Joe Biden and China’s Xi Jinping have swept into San Francisco and are
making their final preparations for their first engagement in a year. Biden
expressed hope that the talks would help put shaky U.S.-China relationship in a
better place. The two leaders arrived in the city to be greeted by hundreds of
demonstrators who lined up along their motorcade routes, waving Chinese,
Taiwanese and Tibetan flags, as well as signs in support and opposition of the
Chinese leader. Biden said his broad goal was to get Washington and Beijing “on
a normal course corresponding” once again even as they have sharp differences on
no shortage of issues.

WORSENING WARMING IS HURTING PEOPLE IN ALL REGIONS, US CLIMATE ASSESSMENT SHOWS

 * By SETH BORENSTEIN and TAMMY WEBBER - Associated Press
 * Updated Nov 14, 2023

A massive new federal government report says revved-up climate change now
permeates Americans’ daily lives with harms that are already far-reaching and
worsening across every region of the United States. Tuesday's National Climate
Assessment is a five-year localized update on what global warming is doing and
will do to the United States. It paints a picture of a country that is warming
about 60% faster than the world as a whole, regularly gets smacked with costly
weather disasters and is facing even bigger future problems, including worsening
health and inequities that hurt poor and minorities hardest.

THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION IS SLOW TO ACT AS MILLIONS ARE BOOTED OFF MEDICAID,
ADVOCATES SAY

Error-ridden state reviews have purged millions of the poorest Americans from
the Medicaid program in recent months. Poverty experts are questioning if the
Biden administration is doing enough to stop states from wrongly removing people
from the government health care program. Estimates show up to 30 million people
could be dropped from Medicaid as states finish reviewing their rolls over the
next year. Advocates interviewed around the country say problems with the
government forms, websites and phone lines in states including Texas, Florida,
North Carolina and Arkansas have led to the high number of people losing
Medicaid. Arkansas' Department of Human Services says it tried to reach people
with additional calls, emails and texts.

INTERNAL DOCUMENTS SHOW THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION PAID SEXUAL ABUSE VICTIMS
IN CONGO $250 EACH

 * By MARIA CHENG - AP Medical Writer
 * Updated Nov 14, 2023

Internal documents obtained by The Associated Press show that the World Health
Organization has paid $250 each to at least 104 women in Congo who say they were
sexually abused or exploited by Ebola outbreak responders. That amount is less
than what some U.N. officials are given for a single day’s expenses when working
in Congo. That amount covers typical living expenses for less than four months
in a country where the WHO notes many people survive on less than $2.15 a day.
In interviews, recipients told the AP the money was hardly enough, but they
wanted justice even more.

THOUSANDS IN MEXICO DEMAND JUSTICE FOR LGBTQ+ FIGURE FOUND DEAD AFTER DEATH
THREATS

 * By MEGAN JANETSKY - Associated Press
 * Updated Nov 14, 2023

Thousands have marched in Mexico’s capital demanding justice for an influential
LGBTQ+ figure who was found dead at home in the city of Aguascalientes after
receiving death threats. Jesús Ociel Baena was the first openly nonbinary person
to assume a judicial post in Mexico, becoming a magistrate in state electoral
court, and broke through other barriers in a country where LGBTQ+ people are
often targeted with violence. Prosecutors confirmed Baena was found dead Monday
morning next to another person. A suggestion that suicide was a possibility
touched off widespread anger, with LGBTQ+ groups calling it an attempt by
officials to brush aside violence against their communities. Thousands gathered
in Mexico City lighted candles over photos of Baena and other victims of
violence.

ARSON LIKELY CAUSED FIRE THAT DAMAGED VITAL ARTERY OF LOS ANGELES FREEWAY,
GOVERNOR SAYS

 * By JOHN ANTCZAK, JULIE WATSON and JEFF McMURRAY - Associated Press

California Gov. Gavin Newsom says arson caused a massive fire that has
indefinitely closed a vital section of a freeway in Los Angeles. Engineers have
been assessing the situation Monday. The freeway is used by 300,000 vehicles
daily and the closure is expected to be felt well beyond the city, including
possibly slowing the transport of goods from the twin ports of LA and Long
Beach, federal officials have said. The ports are among the nation’s largest and
handle more than half the goods coming into the U.S. President Joe Biden had
been briefed on the fire that erupted Saturday.

THE MAN ACCUSED OF ATTACKING PELOSI'S HUSBAND APOLOGIZES FOR HAMMER ASSAULT

 * By OLGA R. RODRIGUEZ - Associated Press
 * Updated Nov 14, 2023

The man accused of attacking former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband
with a hammer has apologized. In taking the stand at his trial Tuesday, David
DePape echoed right-wing conspiracy theories to explain to jurors that he went
to the Pelosis’ home as part of a bigger plot to end what he viewed as
government corruption. DePape spoke for more than an hour in which he tearfully
recounted about how his political leanings went from leftist to right-wing after
reading a comment on a YouTube video about former President Donald Trump. He
said he bludgeoned Paul Pelosi after realizing his larger plan might be
unraveling.
