Plan Your School Trip Free Resources Official Trailer School Trip A-Level Workshops and School Trips ABOUT WICKED Was the 'Wicked Witch of the West' really wicked or the innocent victim of a corrupt regime? Photo by Matt Crockett Photo by Matt Crockett Teacher Testimonials Press Reviews Twice voted 'Best Theatre Production for Schools' by teachers at the annual School Travel Awards, and inspired by L. Frank Baum's "classic of children's literature" (BBC Bitesize), 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', Wicked explores themes of self-esteem, discrimination, identity, fake news, and friendship, and supports programmes of study for English, Drama, Music, PSHE, and more. Adapted for the stage from Gregory Maguire's acclaimed novel 'Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West' (readers 16+) by writer Winnie Holzman and featuring songs by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked is an ingenious re-imagining of the 'Wizard of Oz' story. > "The allegorical origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West, 'Wicked' > provides a nuanced examination of good and evil, and an indictment of elitism, > racism, fascism, scapegoating and the corrupting nature of power ." > > Independent The acclaimed stage musical takes learners on an unforgettable journey beyond the famous Yellow Brick Road, placing familiar characters in an original and riveting new story that serves as both a prequel and sequel to "one of the most influential children's stories of all time" (The Times). Wicked is about "nurturing self-esteem, overcoming discrimination, and finding a sense of identity" (Drama & Theatre), and tells the untold story of an initially unlikely and eventually profound friendship between two university students, 'Galinda Upland' and 'Elphaba Thropp', and how their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as 'Glinda The Good' and the 'Wicked Witch of the West'. DID YOU KNOW? L. Frank Baum's inspiration for the name 'Oz' came from a filing cabinet in his study - there were three drawers marked 'A-G', 'H-N', and "O-Z", and so 'Oz' was born. In Wicked, the 'jewelled shoes' are silver, not ruby (as they were in the 1939 film). This is because they were silver in Baum's original story and only became ruby to make use of the Technicolor process in the MGM film. The name 'Elphaba', the central character in Wicked, is derived from L. Frank Baum's initials - 'L. F. B'.
