SASSA

South African social security agency (SASSA) is a national agency owned by the
government of South Africa that was established on the behalf of Department Of
Social Developed on April 25,2025 with the aim of distributing social grants
through South Africa Social Security system. The government of South Africa
established this agency in light  of the Social Assistance Act of 2004 and South
African Social Security Agency Act of 2004.

The reason to establish SASSA was to shift the social security assistance from
provinces to the central for the provision of social security assistance with
the aim to make the services better for people. the key role of South African
social security agency is to administer and provide social grants to the
deserving people of South Africa while preventing corruption and frauds.




TYPES OF SASSA GRANTS

Grants are divided into following categories:

 1. Aged person’s grant
 2. Child support grant
 3. Foster child grant
 4. Grant for disabled
 5. War veteran’s grant
 6. Grant in aid
 7. Grant for care dependency


SRD R350 : ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA, REQUIREMENTS, APPLICATION PROCESS AND MORE

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

Before you apply for the SRD R350 grant it is important for you to check whether
you are eligible for social assistance or not. The required criteria for a
person eligible for the grant is:

 * South African citizen
 * Asylum seeker
 * Refugee verified from the department of home affairs.
 * You must be living in South Africa.
 * You must not be getting any other grant from the government.
 * Your monthly income must be less than R624.
 * You must be between 18 to 60 years old.
 * You must be not sufficient to support your basic needs of life.
 * You must be unemployed.
 * You must not be receiving an unemployed insurance fund or NSFAS.
 * You must not be living in state funded accommodation
 * You must not decline any employment or educational offer without any solid
   reason.


REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR SRD R350 GRANT:

If you find yourself eligible for the social assistance then the next step is to
submit the documents for submission. You will need to submit the required
document in soft form(electronically) only. According to the official website of
SASSA verifies the personal information of applicants online so no physical
document is required.

Keep the following documents while applying for the SRD R350 Grant

 1. If you are a South African citizen you will provide the South African ID
    number and for asylum seekers,refugees or special permit holders they will
    provide the permit number issued by the Department of Home Affairs.
 2. Your full name ,gender and date of birth(DOB) according to your ID card or
    Permit.
 3. Bank statement which shows your translation history.
 4. Your Discharge letter from a previous institution/employer as proof that you
    are unemployed.
 5. Your phone number that is registered on your name.
 6. Your home address with utility bill.


APPLICATION PROCESS FOR SRD R350 GRANT:

You can apply for SRD R350 social assistance online through mobile, PC or laptop
with an internet connection. 

STEP 1: CHOOSE ANY ONE CHANNEL:

You can apply for South African social security agency grant through following
channels and it’s up to you which one is convenience for you:

 * Visiting the SASSA SRD website.
 * WhatsApp.
 * chatbot.

VISITING THE SASSA SRD WEBSITE:

For applying South African social security agency Grant through website follow
the following steps:

 1. Visit the official SASSA SRD website. The link to the official website is :
    https://srd.sassa.gov.za/said 
 2. Once you open the website go to “How do I apply for this SRD Grant” and look
    for the button: “click here to apply online”.
 3. Enter your mobile numbers that are registered on your name.
 4. Click on “Send SMS”.
 5. You will receive an OTP on your. Enter that OTP and click “Verify Pin”.
 6. Continue step 2.

THROUGH WHATSAPP:

For applying Grant through WhatsApp follow the following steps:

 1. Save SRD official number(082 046 8553 ) in contact list.
 2. Send a message and provide information asked.
 3. You will receive an OTP,reference number and a link to the official SRD
    website.
 4. Tap on the link and enter OTP and click verify.
 5. Enter personal details including your name and ID number 
 6. Continue to step 2 explained below.

THROUGH CHATBOT:

For applying Grant through WhatsApp follow the following steps:

 1. Visit SASSA SRD website.
 2. Look for “SRD R350 Grant Assistance ” chatbot and click on it.
 3. Enter ID and Mobile number.
 4. A pop up will appear “I want to apply for SRD R350 Grant”.just click on it.
 5. You will receive a link for the chat.
 6. Continue step 2 explained below.

THROUGH SMS:

You can apply for SASSA SRD R350 grant through by dialling a USSD code
*134*7737# the keypad.

STEP 2: AGREE TO THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

Now Terms and Conditions will appear on the screen. Read those terms and
conditions and agree to them and continue to the next step.

STEP 3: ENTERING PERSONAL DETAILS:

In this step you will need to enter your following personal details:

 1. Your 13 digit ID Number.
 2. Your complete name according to the ID card.
 3. Your address
 4. Your gender
 5. Contact details
 6. Your employment and financial informations

STEP 4: CHOOSING PAYMENT METHOD:

If you are applying for the first time for the grant then you will have two
choices for the payment method. You can choose either one of them:

 * Bank account
 * Cash 

BANK ACCOUNT:

If you prefer bank account as a channel to receive grant then provide following
details and agree to terms and conditions and submit:

 * Bank name
 * Branch name
 * Account type

Please note that that account should be in your name because according to rules
SASSA can’t send money to someone else’s account.

CASH:

If you select cash as a payment method then follow the following steps:

 * Enter mobile number (registered on your name)
 * Agree to terms and conditions
 * Submit 

STEP 5: CONFIRMATION:

After completing the upper steps in the right way, you will receive a
confirmation message that your SRD grant is active.

STEP 6:SASSA VERIFICATION PROCESS:

This is the final step of SASSA application and it is related to the SASSA
administration.in the verification process SASSA will verify your personal data
from the database of department of home affairs. your details about finance and
employment will be verified. And a special assessment will be done to prevent
the fraud.

After the whole process your application will be accepted or rejected for grant
on the basis of solid reason and the process will be completed after this.


SASSA SRD PROCESSING DURATION:

The usual processing time for SASSA application is 60 to 90 day. however, this
duration may vary under different circumstances or number of applications
received. If your application is accepted then your grant will be issued from
the date you applied but in case your application is declined you will receive a
letter explaining the reason why your application for grant is not accepted.


SASSA SRD RECONSIDER PROCEDURE:

In case your grant application is rejected then you might start a
reconsideration in which you will request SASSA to review your application. But
before applying for reconsidering it is necessary for you to review all of your
personal details you provided. You can apply for reconsidering within 30 days of
rejection of your application and you can avail this opportunity only once.

For reconsidering you can can apply by two methods:

 * Through SASSA official website
 * By calling SASSA;s Toll Free number


SASSA SRD REAPPLICATION PROCEDURE:

If you fulfil the criteria of eligibility for SASSA grant but you missed the
duration for application or your gant has expired then you can reapply for the
grant and the process for reapplying is the same as applying for the first time.
You will need to visit the SASSA SRD website and enter the same information that
you entered while applying for the first time. You will be asked your ID number,
name, contact details and bank account. 

After this SASSA will review your details and make a decision of accepting or
declining your application.


SASSA SRD R350 GRANT APPEAL

If your reconsideration application is rejected and you still believe that you
are eligible for SASSA grant then you have the right that you can lodge an
appeal against the SASSA’s decision of declining your application within 90 days
of SASSA’s decision. While appealing you will need to provide your following
information:

 * Your name
 * Your contact details
 * SASSA reference number
 * Explaining the reason that why you think you are eligible but SASSA rejected
   your application
 * Proof to support your appeal

Your appeal must be submitted to ITSAA(independent tribunal for social
assistance appeals) within 90 days then ITSAA will review your application. If
ITSAA found out that you are eligible then you will start getting an amount
otherwise you will be notified about your rejection/decline of your application.




SASSA SRD GRANT STATUS CHECK

When you have applied for the grant then you can track the status of your
application. Through status check you can check whether your application is
accepted or rejected. Once your application is accepted you will have to check
the upcoming dates for gant payment through a status check. You can check the
status through following ways:

 * SASSA Official website
 * Moya app
 * SMS at 082-046-8553
 * Whatsapp at 082-046-8553
 * Through Tall Free number 0800-601011


CANCELLING SASSA SRD GRANT APPLICATION

In case your financial condition becomes good while your gant application is
pending then you have the choice to cancel that application. On the other hand
if your application has already been approved and now you want to cancel the
grant then you will have to lodge an appeal for the cancellation of grant.

For canceling first check your status on the website. If your grant status is
inactive then you don’t need to cancel on the other hand if it is active than
follow the following steps for cancellation:

 1. Open SRD website on browser.
 2. Provide SRD and phone number and click on “Send Pin”.
 3. OTP will be sent to your mobile. Enter this OTP and proceed to verify.
 4. Another interface will appear on your screen. Now look for “Cancel my grant”
    and click on it.
 5. Now select “yes”. Your grant application will be cancelled.


REINSTATE CANCELLED SRD R350 GRANT

In situations like your grant was canceled at your request because your
employment or financial status was improved and now unfortunately your financial
conditions are worsened and you need the grant again to support your basic needs
of life. So if you want to reinstate the canceled grant you need to follow
following steps:

 1. Visit SRD website.
 2. Provide SRD and mobile number and click on “Send”.
 3. OTP will be sent on your mobile number. Enter that OTP and tap on “verify
    pin”
 4. Agree to terms and conditions.
 5. Click on “Reinstate my grant”
 6. Confirm that you want to reinstate your grant by clicking on the “YES”
    button on the prompt of your screen.


SASSA GRANT PAYMENT METHOD

Once your SASSA grant will be approved the SASSA will start paying you the giant
from the day you applied. SASSA doesn’t pay an amount to the grantees on a fixed
date every month so you need to check the date for gant regularly  by visiting
the official website of SASSA SRD.

When your application for SASSA grant will be approved you will be given two
choices for payment. You can either choose a bank account or cash payment.

If you choose the bank account then your payment will be deposited in your
account on a designated date. And if you opt for a cash payment then you can
withdraw your amount from the retail outlets like Usave,checkers and spars etc.


UPDATING CONTACT DETAILS FOR SASSA GRANT

Sometimes your contact number or home address is changed due to any reason then
you must update your new contact details on SRD application. To update contact
details follow the following instruction:

 1. Open SRD website on browser
 2. Provide ID number and SASSA applicant ID number.
 3. Enter new contact details that you want to update.
 4. Proceed further and click on the “Submit” button.

Note that your contact details will be updated after 24 hours to your request
for update.


UPDATE NAME FOR SASSA GRANT

In case you have entered the wrong name or made a spelling mistake while
submitting your application then you have the option to update it. You can
update your name according to the name as mentioned on your South African ID
card. And if your name is changed due to different reasons like marriage or
divorce then you need to update your name on your ID card first.

For update follow following steps:

 1. Visit SRD website on browser and scroll down.
 2. Look for the “South African ID holder” button and click on “click here to
    proceed”.
 3. After it, tap on “Request name and Surname update”.
 4. Enter your ID, new name and surname and tap “submit”.

After this SASSA will verify your name and surname from the database of the
department of home affairs and update it accordingly. Once your details are
updated you will receive a message from SASSA to inform you about the updates.


UPDATING BANK DETAILS FOR SASSA GRANT

If you change your bank account then it is necessary for you to update banking
details for SASSA so you may continue receiving your grant without any hurdle.
The process of updating banking details is different for the citizens of south
Africa and asylum seekers or special permit seeker


FOR SOUTH AFRICANS:

If you are a citizen of South Africa than follow following steps:

 1. Open SRD website on browser.
 2. Look for “click here to proceed” and tap on it. Another page will be open.
 3. Now look for “How do I change my banking details” and click on it.
 4. Enter your ID card number. Once youtube=need your ID number you will receive
    a link in message.
 5. Tap on this link and follow instructions accordingly and provide the details
    correctly that are being asked.


FOR ASYLUM SEEKERS AND SPECIAL PERMIT HOLDERS:

 If you are Asylum seeker and Special permit holder than follow following steps:

 1. Open SRD website on browser.
 2. Look for “provide payment ID to collect payment and select any one option
    that is convenient for you.
 3. Enter phone,file and pass[ort number that you used during registration time.
 4. Follow the instructions and complete the updating process.

It is important that the bank account you are updating be on your name otherwise
it will not be accepted as according to SASSA’s rules SASSA can send money only
to the bank account registered on the name of grantee itself.


SASSA’S UPDATED POLICY FOR SOCIAL ASSISTANCE

Previously, it was mandatory for persons whom status for SASSA grant was active
needed to reapply for the grant after every three months for the continuation of
their grant but now the SASSA has reviewed their policy and decided that the
grantees will continue receiving their grants until their eligibility and the
don’t need to reapply for grant after every three months.
