PROSTATE FOCAL THERAPY, THE NEW STANDARD AT STANFORD

Focal therapy is aimed towards treating the cancerous portion of the prostate
gland, minimizing its spread, and preserving surrounding healthy tissue. This
reduces the risk of side effects, such as erectile dysfunction and urinary
incontinence. By using MRI to guide focal therapy, we can design, build, and
execute customized treatment plans for each of our prostate cancer patients.

EXPERIENCED INNOVATORS IN FOCAL THERAPY

Stanford Medicine physician-scientists are on the front lines of developing
novel therapies. Our team of radiologists and urologists who are experts in MR
guided focal therapy offer these innovative procedures. Our goal is to treat
your cancer with modern techniques so you can get back to your active lifestyle
with the ones you love.

REAL-TIME MRI IMPROVES YOUR OUTCOMES

MR imaging is radiation-free and is the best way to visualize detailed prostate
anatomy. During prostate focal treatment, we monitor treatment progress in
real-time via frequent MRI several times a minute to provide efficacy and
safety.

WE OFFER THREE OPTIONS FOR FOCAL THERAPY

(Hover to see more)

TULSA

TULSA (Transurethral Directional Ultrasound for Thermal Ablation) is a
cutting-edge treatment for prostate cancer. It utilizes an ultrasound device
placed within the urethra to deliver targeted energy in a sweeping motion to the
treatment area.

The TULSA system incorporates cooling mechanisms to protect surrounding anatomy.
MRI is integrated for precise tissue targeting, real-time temperature
monitoring, and immediate evaluation of treatment results.

EXABLATE

ExAblate® Prostate, also known as High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)
utilizes ultrasound waves to precisely heat and ablate targeted prostate tissue.

The treatment is performed using a transrectal approach, guided by MR imaging
and real-time thermometry data to optimize outcomes. The clinical team uses
specialized software to create a personalized treatment plan and contrast images
are used at the end to confirm successful delivery.

CRYOTHERAPY

Cryotherapy, also known as cryoablation, is a minimally invasive treatment for
prostate cancer. It involves freezing cancerous prostate tissue to destroy the
cancer cells.

During the procedure, small needles are inserted into the prostate gland, and a
gas that causes cold temperatures is circulated through the needles to freeze
the targeted tissue. Imaging techniques such as ultrasound or MRI ensure precise
targeting and monitoring of the treatment.
