The Certified Fire Inspector I (CFI-I) credential helps skilled personnel

application of NFPA 1, Fire Code; NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of
Sprinkler Systems; NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and
Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems; NFPA 72®, National Fire
Alarm and Signaling Code®; and NFPA 101®, Life Safety Code®, the CFI-I
certification promotes professionalism and career development and ensures a
uniform, fair process for certification that is accessible to all candidates who

Prepare to take the exam on your terms with CFI-I Learning Paths. Now you can
customize your journey by choosing individual training courses or a full
Learning Path designed to offer everything you need to help get ready for the
CFI-I exam.

CFI-I Exam Proctoring—Available Worldwide
The exam is based on the job performance requirements for Fire Inspector I as
defined in Chapter 4 of the 2014 edition of NFPA 1031, Standard for Professional
Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner. The exam is a 4-hour
maximum, open-book exam, with 100 multiple-choice questions. The exam is
available at more than 400 Prometric computer-based testing centers around the
world. 

The CFI-I certification can help professionals responsible for performing fire
inspections and/or those who need to showcase that they meet the qualifications
for a fire inspector as outlined in NFPA 1031 and are proficient in the use of
the reference materials, including:
 * Building contractors
   
 * CMS life safety surveyors
   
 * Code officials
   
 * Facility managers
   
 * Fire service members
   
 * Insurance professionals
   


HOW TO APPLY

 1. Download the candidate handbook (PDF), familiarize yourself with the
    program, and determine if you are eligible
 2. Ensure you are signed in to your NFPA.org profile. If you are not, you will
    not be able to access the application portal.
 3. Enter the application portal.
 4. Once in the application portal, follow the prompts to complete the
    application, upload any required documentation, and pay.
 5. Upon completion of your application and processing of your payment, you will
    receive an email with your eligibility number, and instructions on how to
    schedule your exam.
 6. Complete the Practicum workbook and the Practicum proctor affidavit (found
    below in the Reference Materials section) and submit them in the application
    portal to be reviewed by NFPA staff.
 7. Once you have passed the exam and NFPA has approved your Practicum, you will
    be certified. Information about your certification number and expiration
    date, how to print your certificate, and how to recertify can all be found
    in the application porta

HOW TO RETEST AND RECERTIFY

How to retest
Sign in to your nfpa.org account, and complete the retest application in the new
certification management system.

How to recertify
To recertify, go to the certification management system, click the certification
name under "recertification" on the dashboard, and follow the instructions to
submit your recertification application.
