James City County Parks & Rec (JCCPR) has announced its schedule of events for
May 2022 (Courtesy of JCCPR)

JAMES CITY COUNTY — James City County Parks and Recreation has released its
calendar for events happening in May.

Aquatics

Splash on Friday • All Ages FREE!
Friday, May 20, 6-8 p.m. 
James City County Recreation Center
Come enjoy family time in the pool! Free swim area and an area for our Wibit
inflatable obstacle course available! Games and prizes included. Pick up your
event flyer at the James City County Recreation Center. Non-swimmers are
required to use a lifejacket, which is provided. Registration required. Info:

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course • Ages 15+ 
Friday, May 13, 4-6 p.m., $210 includes all sessions 
Saturday, May 14, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. 
Monday-Thursday, May 16-19, 4-9 p.m.
Fee includes all supplies
James City County Recreation Center (JCCRC) and Upper County Park 
• Includes First Aid and CPR certification
• Course Prerequisites: Must attend and pass a swim test (held the first day):
300-yard continuous swim (100 yards of front crawl, 100 yards of breaststroke
and 100 yards of choice of front crawl or breaststroke). Retrieve a 10-pound
brick from a depth of 7-8 feet and return 20 yards, keeping both hands on the
brick at all times; face must remain out of the water. Tread water for two
minutes keeping arms out of the water. (Those who cannot complete course
prerequisites will be dismissed the first day.) 
• Must attend every class to earn certification
• Failure to complete competency test does not guarantee a full refund
• Cell phone use is not permitted in class and can be grounds for dismissal 
• Must be age 15 or older by the last day of class 
• Class meets at the JCCRC on the first day 
• Fee includes swim test, book and materials 

American Red Cross Lifeguard Re-Certification • Ages 15+ 
Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., $60
James City County Recreation Center (JCCRC) and Upper County Park
• Renew your Lifeguarding and CPR/AED for professional rescuers certifications
• Must successfully complete the prerequisite skills, practical skills, first
aid skills and written tests
• Failure to complete all requirements does not guarantee a full refund 
• Cell phone use is not permitted in class and can be grounds for dismissal 
• Please bring current Lifeguard and CPR card for proof of certification 
• Course does not include materials.

Lifeguards are needed to staff Parks & Recreation’s indoor and outdoor pools!
Applicants must be at least 16 years or older, have a current American Red Cross
Lifeguard Certification with First Aid, CPR and AED training and complete a swim

Pre-School Patriotic Chocolate Workshop • Ages 3-5 with parent/guardian NEW!
Friday, May 20, 5-6:30 p.m., $20 
James City County Recreation Center 
You and your child can get ready for the Memorial Day and July 4th holidays by
making fun, patriotic chocolates. Learn basic chocolate making techniques and
create chocolates in the shapes of stars and flags along with other sweet
treats. Please note food allergies at registration, tie back long hair, and
bring an apron/hand towel and one large airtight container to take chocolates
home! Instructor: The Williamsburg Chocolatier, Inc. 

Kid’s Stars & Stripes Cookie Decorating • Ages 6-13 NEW!
Saturday, May 21, 10 a.m.-noon, $25
James City County Recreation Center
Get ready for the Memorial Day and July 4th holidays and decorate patriotic
cookies in star shapes and more! We’ll use buttercream icing, royal icing and
patriotic sprinkles to put the finishing touches on our treats! Stars, smooth
icing, zigzags and lines will create our cute designs. Please note food
allergies at registration, tie back long hair, and bring an apron/hand towel and
two large airtight containers to take home cookies! Instructor: The Williamsburg
Chocolatier, Inc.

Saturdays, May 7 & May 21, 9-10 a.m.

Being active is the secret to staying healthy, and walking is a great way to get
moving! Let our walking coach guide you through the trails of James City County.
Whether you bring a friend, family or meet a new neighbor, you’ll have a blast
while having a positive impact on your health. Different trail location each
month.

Be Well in the Burg • Ages 14+ FREE! NEW!
Saturday, May 14 (registration opens May 8):

11 a.m. – Align & Flow Yoga

“Be Well in the Burg” is a health and wellness initiative to promote active and
healthy lifestyles in your community. May is National Physical Fitness & Sport
Month and we’re offering an opportunity for our community to celebrate and
promote the benefits of fitness participation. Physical activity is the key to
maintaining health and well-being, and we need a mix of physical activity to
stay healthy. All types of fitness counts! Come try a free fitness class at the
James City County Recreation Center – a single class or a group fitness sampler!
Registration opens on Sunday, May 8 at 3 p.m. Participants must register to
receive a spot through signup.com: bit.ly/JCCsignup. These wellness weekends,
held on the second Saturday each month from through Sept. 10, offer various free
fitness classes, nutrition workshops and mind/body programs. No experience

Beach Yoga • Ages 14+ 
Wednesdays, May 11-Aug. 17, 8:15-9:15 a.m., $8/class
Jamestown Beach Event Park
Take me to the river! A fun and informal way to experience the benefits of yoga.
In this inclusive flow style class, we’ll breathe, stretch and explore how
exciting our postures can be when done in the sand. Bring a yoga mat or beach
towel and water. Registration required. 

R.A.D. • Ages 14+ FREE!
Tuesdays & Thursdays – May 17, 19, 26, 31 and June 2, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
James City County Recreation Center
The R.A.D. system (Rape Aggression Defense) is a program of realistic,
self-defense tactics and techniques. This comprehensive (five days) workshop for
women begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance then
progresses on to the basics of hands-on defense training. Classes are taught by
certified R.A.D. instructors with the James City County Police Department. Call

Yoga for Arthritis and Joint Health • Ages 14+ 
Wednesday, May 18, 6-7:30 p.m., $8
James City County Recreation Center
During this 90-minute workshop, we’ll work all the major joints gently and
systematically through a full and natural range of motions to enhance joint
mobility and reduce pain and stiffness. You’ll go home with practices to add to
your everyday life!  

Indoor Cycle 101 • Ages 14+ FREE!
Tuesday, May 24, 5:30-6:15 p.m.
James City County Recreation Center
Indoor cycling classes can be overwhelming to jump into – music, seat settings,
resistance level and to clip or not to clip. We’re here to help! Proper bike
set-up can make or break your class experience and keep you injury-free. This
intro class will teach you all you need to enter the “spin” world. Put things in
full gear with our awesome tunes, control over resistance and speed, and overall
intensity. No bike experience needed. 

Techniques of Meditation • Ages 16+ FREE!
Wednesday, May 4, 7-8 p.m.
James City County Recreation Center
Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or brand new, all are welcome to this
open community meditation practice. We’ll explore different styles of meditation
techniques as well as tools that aid the meditative process. You’ll be guided in
and out of each session. Meditation can improve your physical, emotional and
mental health and well-being.

Resistance at the River • Ages 16+
Thursdays, May 5-26, 8:30-9:30 a.m., $20
Jamestown Beach Event Park
A total body workout for muscular strength and endurance – on the sand! This
class includes functional movements using bodyweight exercises and compound
movements to improve agility, endurance, strength and core. Get your heart
pumping while viewing our very own piece of the James River. Four-week sessions.
Spaces limited. Registration required. 

Drumming for Wellness • Ages 16+ FREE!
Wednesday, May 11, 5:30-7 p.m.  
Freedom Park
In this workshop, we’ll use the drum and the voice as a modality to practice
mindfulness. Students will learn basic drumming and meditation techniques, and
participate in drum circles and sound immersions to experience the use of drums
and sound in ritual, ceremony and recreation. No musical experience necessary!
All instruments provided.

Therapeutic Recreation

Got Goo? Fun & Sticky Sensory Play! • All Ages & Abilities
Wednesday, May 25, 6:30-8 p.m.
$5/family
James City County Recreation Center
Do you like to play with slime? Have you ever painted with spaghetti? Join us
for fun evenings full of yucky, messy activities. Snacks and materials provided.
Bring a messy shirt. Social distancing guidelines will be followed and
individual sensory bins will be provided for each family who registers.
Registration is required by May 18.  

Outdoors

Freedom Park Spring Photo Contest • All Ages FREE!
Freedom Park
The park is hosting a spring photo contest through Friday, May 13. To enter,
visit https://bit.ly/3OqhbrP or email your entry and phone number
to sarah.oreilly@jamescitycountyva.gov; email and phone are required for entry.
Limit two entries per participant and each photo is limited to 10 MB. Voting
will be open to the public from May 20 through the last day of spring on June
20.

Campfire Social • All Ages FREE!
Saturday, May 14, 7-8 p.m.
Chickahominy Riverfront Park
Come celebrate summer with a good old-fashioned campfire gathering at
Chickahominy Riverfront Park! Enjoy s’mores, activities, storytelling and more
around the campfire overlooking Gordon Creek.

Full Moon Hike • All Ages FREE!
Monday, May 16, 8:15-9:30 p.m.
Freedom Park
Ever wondered what animals are lurking once the sun goes down? Come explore the
PARK AFTER DARK during the full moon nights of spring and summer! In this
self-guided hike, the Park will be open late, past sunset, on select nights.
After sunset, visitors may only use Multiuse Trail 3; the full moon hikes are a
walking loop that start and end here. Users must depart the park by the closing
time 9:30 p.m. and must stay on Trail 3 after sunset.

Forest Explorers Friday: Walk & Talk • All Ages FREE!
Friday, May 20, 5:30-7 p.m.
Greensprings Interpretive Trail
Join us for this nature program on Reptiles and a guided hike with our staff to
identify native and non-native plants from bark to blossom and leaves. Programs
are held on the third Friday of every month and feature our guides who present a
nature program on a different topic and then leads children and their parents on
a trip through the forest to learn about plants, wildlife, insects and anything
else we may encounter! Weather permitting.

Outdoor Trivia Nights • Families/All Ages
Friday, May 27, 6:30 p.m., $5/team
Chickahominy Riverfront Park
Are you looking for something fun, educational and socially-distanced for the
entire family? Sign up as an individual or team and be sure to select the number
of participants at time of registration. Questions are geared for ages 12 and
older and the categories include general knowledge, animal identification,
science and more! Bring your own chairs, blankets and thinking caps for this
evening of fun! Winners receive a Parks & Recreation prize pack. Popcorn and
light refreshments available. Registration deadline is May 20. 

Williamsburg Botanical Garden Events • All Ages
Daily through May 31, Honor Box Plant Sale
Freedom Park
The Garden is FREE to visit and open daily during park hours, 7 a.m. until dusk.

Cash is accepted for the Honor Box Plant Sale. 

Explore Powhatan Creek by Kayak • Ages 16+ FREE!
Two sessions offered!
Monday, May 2, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, May 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m. 
James City County Marina
Participants will learn about the natural and historic resources of Powhatan
Creek and the James River with a specific focus on the native flora of Powhatan
Creek. Registration required by

Registration opens at least two weeks before the date of the program. Paddle
craft, paddles and personal flotation devices provided.

New Town Tunes • All Ages NEW! FREE! 
Wednesdays, May 4 & May 11, 5:30 p.m.
Sullivan Square (behind Legacy Hall in New Town)
Come out and enjoy this spring concert series right in the heart of New Town.
Bring your lawn chair or blanket as you listen to a variety of musical artists.
Food and beverages available for purchase. Gates open at 5 p.m. Co-hosted by New
Town and CultureFix. Band information is available

CAP2CAP Bike Ride 2022 • All Ages
May 6 in James City County
Chickahominy Riverfront Park
Registration Fee: $40+/day depending on day/riding distance
The CapCenter Cap2Cap Bike Ride is back for its 17th year! This annual event
showcases the Virginia Capital Trail, a 51.7 mile multiuse trail which connects
all of Virginia’s capitals – Jamestown, Williamsburg and Richmond. Presented by
Dominion Energy, this year’s event will be held May 6-7 with post-ride Party
Zones at Chickahominy Riverfront Park in James City County (May 6) and Dorey
Park in Henrico County (May 7). Included in the registration fee are an official
Cap2Cap T-shirt, lunch & beverage ticket at the Party Zone, rest stops with
snacks & water, ride support (along the Trail), water bottle, one raffle entry,
and a cheering squad on your ride day! For more information on the race format,

It’s time to kick off summer! James City County’s two outdoor pools and splash
pad open for the summer Memorial Day weekend. Chickahominy Riverfront Park
features a splash pad with a zero-depth camping themed aquatic area with ten
spray elements including ground sprays, rain tunnels, shower sprayers and our
Bass Fish sprayers. Located adjacent to the swimming pool, this water feature is
perfect for all ages and especially non-swimmers! The park offers visitors
separate restrooms, two shade structures, lounge chairs, a playground nearby, an
ADA accessible pool lift and a snack bar stocked with ice cream, drinks and
chips. After-hours rentals are available at the pools and splash pad. At Upper
County Park, ways to play feature a 25-meter pool with a slide and a toddler
pool. For your convenience, there are separate and family changing rooms with
showers, a snack bar, shade structures, lounge chairs and a playground nearby.
After-hours pool rentals are available. 

Sports
All May classes and clinics are full. 

The Lounge/Trips! • Ages 55+
National Mall
Thursday, May 12, 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Register by May 4!
$63/person; $58 for Lounge members
Trip departs the James City County Recreation Center at 8 a.m.;  return
approximately at 6 p.m. 
Come along with us as we head up to Washington D.C. Our motor coach will drop
off and pick up at the National Museum of African American History and Culture.
You’ll have five hours on your own to explore the museums on the mall.

Amish Countryside
Tuesday-Thursday, June 14-16. Register by May 13! 
$489/person/double occupancy
$589/person/single occupancy
This three day, two night stay in Lancaster, PA will include a tour of an Amish
working farm, a Sight and Sound performance of “David,” Dutch and local food

The James City County Recreation Center and the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center
are closed Monday, May 30, Memorial Day.  
All County parks, including the Stores/Offices within the parks, are open
Memorial Day.
