Such a simple device for keeping track of ones schedules, to do lists, ideas or
reminders. In other words, without Silver’s “accident” discovery and Fry’s
persistence to create his “bookmarks,” we probably would still be without the

that often holds important content that would be forgotten without its presence.
Sticky notes are now used for large-scale art installations, they’re used for
business networking games and brainstorming, and they’re still in-demand in
offices around the world. Post-it Notes have only been available since 1980, but
in just over three decades, they’ve achieved international stardom. That’s why
custom Post-it Notes make great promotional gifts and they’re widely used for
marketing purposes. Pads can be shaped in just about any shape – from a
schoolhouse, to a golf ball and everything in between – and they’re commonly

team began developing the product, they could only find yellow scraps of paper
to experiment with. Yet, still, one more accident would help shape the future of
the Post-it Note. That’s when Fry remembered the adhesive invention of his
colleague, and he had an “aha moment.” The adhesive would be perfect, he
thought, and Fry then started developing the notes using Silver’s adhesive for
3M. He dreamt up a bookmark that could stick to the pages, but that could also
be easily removed without damaging the paper. He kept losing his place in the
hymnal books at church. In 1974, another 3M researcher and chemist, Art Fry had
a problem. Initially, 3M couldn’t find a use for Silver’s invention, and it
wasn’t until six years later that the adhesive was put to practical use. The
‘Aha Moment’ that Led to the Invention of the Post-it Noteīut the story of the
Post-it Note doesn’t end there. The glue also kept its stickiness when applied
with pressure and was reusable.

He created a weak adhesive that could be removed easily without leaving behind a
residue. Silver had the job of developing adhesives for 3M, and although his
mission was to create a stronger, more reliable adhesive for the aerospace
industry, Silver ended up with something that wasn’t that. The story of the

Taken together, through rigorous testing and validation, we demonstrate that our
effective droplet model is a pragmatic, fast and a computationally efficient
option, if simulations of phase separated droplets in large-scale emulsions are
desired. Furthermore, we also show that our model accurately captures the
dynamic out of equilibrium behaviour of droplets in the presence of chemical
reactions and external chemical gradients. We then demonstrate that our choice
of the optimum parameters indeed leads to faithful capturing of droplet dynamics
in emulsions across a multitude of situations ranging from a single droplet in a
large system to coarsening behaviour of 100 thousand droplets. In the second
part of the thesis, we choose optimum values for the simulation parameters in
the effective droplet model using a synthetic test-case and comparing it with
the ground truth, i.e., simulations using the Cahn-Hilliard model. The effective
droplet model has many simulation parameters which need to be carefully chosen
to faithfully capture growth and drift of droplets. These fluxes also affect the
dynamics of the dilute phase itself. The dynamics of droplet growth and drift
follows from material fluxes exchanged between the droplet and the dilute phase,
which are obtained from solving a steady-state reaction-diffusion equation
inside all sectors. We then study interaction of the droplets with the dilute
phase by discretizing their vicinity into thin annular sectors. Droplets are
then well described by their positions and radii, and the dilute phase dynamics
by a coarse reaction-diffusion equation.

To this end, we consider a typical situation of many spherical droplets formed
via Liquid-liquid phase separation and are far away from each other. In such an
effective droplet model, we replace the description of the full volume fraction
field stemming from the Cahn-Hilliard model with pertinent degrees of freedom
for the phase separated droplets. In the first part of the thesis, we derive
observations from typical simulations of the Cahn-Hilliard model, and build the
theory for an effective droplet model with reasonable analytical assumptions.
The aim of this thesis was to disentangle and model the effects of chemical
reactions and external chemical gradients on the dynamics of such phase
separated droplets via numerical simulations, and thus gain insights on how cell
regulates the dynamics, formation, dissolution and stability of it's
condensates. In this thesis, we will develop a fast and efficient numerical
model for simulating dynamics of droplets which have been phase separated from a
dilute phase, without solving the computationally expensive Cahn-Hilliard
equation that describes phase separation. The cell exercises this control
through various mechanisms, two of them being chemical reactions and external
chemical gradients. Precise spatiotemporal regulation of condensates is
essential for proper functioning of the cell and its survival.

This phenomena has been observed in biological cells as well, where
membrane-less organelles, also known as condensates, form in the cell through
Liquid-liquid phase separation.

photosynthesis will cease and plants and, consequently, plant eating species
will die out. As the temperature on Earth drops, the surface water will quickly
freeze. And you will be absolutely right! But in that case the event horizon
will be even smaller.Ĭonclusion 2 : the Earth would have orbited a solar mass
black hole just as it currently orbits the SunĪs for the living things on our
planet, life on Earth, even though it will stay on its current orbit, will not
be a picnic. Therefore any planet orbiting more than 3 kilometers away from the
