WHAT IS PARTY WALL?


WHY APPLEWOODS?

A party wall is essentially a shared wall between two properties. Owners have
certain rights in relation to a party wall and these are protected by an Act of
Parliament known as the

Party Wall etc Act 1996. This Act is designed to prevent and resolve disputes in
relation to party walls. The Act also covers boundary walls, excavations near
neighbouring buildings and ‘party structures’, which could be a wall between two
houses or a floor between two flats.

A building owner proposing to start work covered in the Act is required by law
to give adjoining owners notice in a procedure set down by the Act. Activities
such as excavating for foundations, removing a chimney breast or inserting a
steel beam can all require notice to be served.
