ABOUT THE WEST VIRGINIA STATE MUSEUM

The museum section of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History
oversees and operates four historic sites and museums:

 * The West Virginia State Museum
 * Camp Washington-Carver
 * Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex
 * West Virginia Independence Hall

The West Virginia State Museum is dedicated to inspiring, educating and
enriching the lives of the public by instilling a deeper understanding and sense
of pride through the collection, preservation and exhibition of diverse cultural
and historic traditions, focusing on every aspect of West Virginia history,
culture, art, paleontology, archaeology and geology from all geographic regions
- representing the people, land and industries.

We offer a variety of free tours and activities. The tours range from
self-guided to in-depth discovery tours. Contact the Education Coordinator,
Nathan Barner, via email or telephone (304) 558-0220 ext. 185, to find the right
tour program for you and your students.

What's Up with the Fleas?

The Show Path is an approximately 45-minute tour through West Virginia history
from prehistory all the way up to the 21st century. Vistors are immersed in each
time and place as history comes alive through first-person accounts and dynamic
re-creations of pivotal events and places in the state's past. 26 Discovery
Rooms featuring artifacts, artwork, stories, music, film clips are connected to
the Show Path. Two Connections Rooms allow visitors to learn even more about
West Virginia. Touchscreens within these rooms provide the opportunity to
explore photographs, documents, journal articles, and additional information
about the state's deep cultural roots and rich history. For an overview of the
museum and its layout, view our museum map: Museum Map (English) and Mapa del
museo (Spanish), or check out the video tour from WVPBS.

HISTORY OF THE MUSEUM

JANUARY 30, 1890

The West Virginia Historical and Antiquarian Society organized in the Senate
Chamber of the State House in Charleston on January 30, 1890. Initially, the
organization had limited state support but was given a home on the first floor
of the capitol to showcase its collection.

Dr. John P. Hale, a founding member and president of the West Virginia
Historical and Antiquarian Society

APRIL 3, 1894

Governor William A. MacCorkle held a reception to announce the opening of the
West Virginia State Museum in the 1885 West Virginia State Capitol building
located at the head of Capitol Street in downtown Charleston. The museum
exhibited artifacts that were once part of the West Virginia Building at the
Columbian Expoisiton at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, Illinois in addition
to the valuable collection of the Historical Society already on exhibit. The
next day, an article in the newspaper applauded the large turnout for the event
and for the efforts of Governor MacCorkle, Colonel Bob Carr, Colonel A.D.
MacCorkle, and Captain John Baker White. Both collections continue to be
exhibited together.

Governor William A. MacCorkle

FEBRUARY 18, 1905

An act of legislature officially declared the collection of the Historical
Society to be a part of the West Virginia State Museum. The legislation to
combine both collections passed and included additional funding and a new home
for the museum. The West Virginia State Museum moved to the Capitol Annex that
had been completed in 1903. This move was a great move for the early museum
collection as it saved it from capitol fire of 1921.
Once Cass Gilbert's 1932 design of the West Virginia State Capitol was
completed, the museum's collection was placed on exhibit in the basement.

The museum in the basement of the capitol

JULY 11, 1976

By the early 1970s, it was determined that the State Museum had outgrown its
space in the Capitol building's basement and needed its own facility where it
could continue to preserve and showcase the wonderful treasures of its
collection.
On July 11, 1976, the West Virginia Science and Culture Center opened with
beautiful state of the art exhibitions of history and culture. To this day, the
collection is still housed in this environmentally-controlled modern facility.

JUNE 2009-PRESENT

In June of 2009, new renovations for the West Virginia State Museum were
completed and the museum re-opened its exhibitions and art displays with
updated, modern conservation mounts, scenic beauty, and architectural design
elements that will help to preserve the collection for generations to come.

Spot this week's #FridayFinds👀 along the Show Path of the West Virginia
State Museum. This banjo once belonged to Woody Simmons of Mill Creek,
   Randolph County, circa 1975.

Woody Simmons (1911-2005) was a talented old-time musician and competitor.
Though the banjo is pictured here, Simmons was a master of the fiddle.
Simmons was a self-taught musician and played the clawhammer-style banjo as
well as flatpick guitar. In 1930, Simmons won the first Mountain State Forest
Festival fiddle competition held in Elkins.

🪓 Feeling dull? No worries! Let's sharpen your knowledge with some
   history...

Grindstones like the one pictured here are used to sharpen ferrous knives and
tools. Typically, grindstones like this were made from a round piece of
sandstone or granite and placed in a wooden (or even metal) frame with a bar
in the middle so that the grindstone can be turned by the handle with one
hand. Much like sandpaper, each stone had a different grit.

‼ Fun fact! Grindstones have been around since ancient times.

📍 This grindstone was used for sharpening tools and dates to circa 1840. See
it on display in the Cabin Barn along the Show Path at the West Virginia
   State Museum!

   ❤🤍💙 November 11 ❤🤍💙
Today, we honor all who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

   Did You Know?
📌 In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that November 11 be known as
Armistice Day in commemoration of the cessation of the fighting between the
Allied nations and Germany during World War I that took place prior to the
official signing of the Treat of Versailles.

📌 A Congressional resolution in 1938 declared that Armistice Day was a
federal holiday dedicated "to the cause of world peace," although only a few
years later, World War II broke out in Europe.

📌 In June of 1954, Congress amended the Act of 1938 recognizing Armistice
Day to instead recognize "Veterans Day," in honor of all American veterans of
all wars. President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day
   Proclamation on October 8th.

📌 Although the 1968 Uniform Holiday Bill had changed the national
commemoration of Veterans Day to the 4th Monday of October, the first
Veterans Day under this law celebrated in 1971 created confusion. It was
decided that November 11th held so much historic and patriotic significance
to American citizens that the holiday should return to its original date.
President Gerald R. Ford signed the
law that returned the commemoration to November 11, beginning in 1978.

🧠 Okay, history buffs...Let's see if you can identify the original building
that these artifacts were once a part of. We'll give you a few hints!

📌 The building is located in Wheeling and was designed by Ammi Young and
   completed in 1859.
📌 The building is now a National Historic Landmark and serves as a museum
dedicated to the statehood movement and Civil War history.
📌 Originally a U.S. custom house, the purpose of the facility was to serve
as the regional post office—complete with offices for the surveyor of customs
   and steamboat inspector.

   Ready for the answer? ⬇

Located in Discovery Room 8: The Big City, the brick, cast-iron shutter,
floor tiles, and railing spindle were all part of the original U.S. Custom
House in Wheeling, 1859. During the spring and summer of 1861, delegates met
at the custom house and formed a Virginia state government that remained
loyal to the union. The building then served as the capitol of the pro-Union
Restored Government of Virginia until West Virginia became a state on June
   20, 1863.

⏰#DaylightSavingTime has come to an end! Naturally, we thought it'd be a good
time to share a picture of this eight-day tall case clock with painted face
and weights for operation dating to around 1810 that was once owned by WV
   Governor William A. MacCorkle.

Did you remember to change all of your clocks?

Fun Facts about the #History of Daylight Savings:
🚂 Standard time in time zones was used in the United States by railroads
beginning in 1883, but it wasn't an official law until the Standard Time Act
passed in March 1918. Although, just one year later, daylight saving time was
repealed and daylight time became a local matter.
⌚ In 1966, the Uniform Time Act provided that Daylight Saving Time begins on
the last Sunday in April and ends on the last Sunday in October. The start
and end times would change in 1974, 1975, 1986, and 2005.
🍂 Starting in 2007, Daylight Saving Time begins on the second Sunday of
March (💐Spring Forward) and ends on the first Sunday of November (🍂Fall
   Back).

📅Today marks a federal holiday. The second #Monday of each October is
recognized as both #ColumbusDay and #IndigenousPeoplesDay.

   ABOUT EACH HOLIDAY:
📌 Columbus Day was declared a national holiday by presidential decree in
1937. In 1968, it was designated as a federal holiday celebrating Italian
immigrant's history and heritage, culture, and accomplishments in the United
States. The day is named for Christopher Columbus due to his legacy of
exploration during colonial times. Columbus Day is also celebrated in several
   European and Latin American countries.

📌 Indigenous Peoples Day was first recognized as a national holiday in 2021.
The holiday celebrates Native American peoples' histories and cultures
although conversations about the holiday trace back to 1977. South Dakota
became the first state to officially recognize the holiday in 1989.

#WVHistory is intertwined with both European exploration and settlement and
Indigenous settlement. Be sure to learn more about our state's rich culture
and history when you visit the West Virginia State Museum.

Also, the entire month of #October is celebrated as #WestVirginiaArchaeology
   Month!

Don't forget to grab a copy of this year's poster about Indigenous occupation
on the #OhioRiverIslands developed by our partners at Grave Creek Mound

   🍂 October 10 🍂
#OnThisDayInHistory, the Battle of Point Pleasant was fought in 1774 at the
confluence of the Kanawha and Ohio rivers. This year marks the 250th
anniversary of the battle. Pictured here are a banquet program (replica) from
the dedication of the Battle of Point Pleasant Monument at Tu-Endie-Wei State
Park and a commemorative medal from the bicentennial anniversary of the
Battle of Point Pleasant in 1974. Both are on display at the West Virginia
   State Museum.

   #LearnWithUs! Did you know...
📌 The Battle of Point Pleasant was the only significant engagement fought
during Lord Dunmore's War, a series of colonial wars. Lord Dunmore was
governor of Virginia at the time.
📌Colonial forces at the site of the Battle of Point Pleasant were led by
Colonel Andrew Lewis and the Shawnee were led by Shawnee leader Chief
   Cornstalk.
📌 Lewis's victory at the Battle of Point Pleasant was a landmark for
settlement on the frontier and resulted in the Treaty of Camp Charlotte.
📌In 1908, Congress designated the #BattleOfPointPleasant as the first battle
of the #AmericanRevolution following the campaign led by Livia Simpson
Poffenbarger and the Charles Lewis Chapter of the
#DaughtersoftheAmericanRevolution. $10,000 was also appropriated to erect a
   statue commemorating the battle.
📌On October 10, 1909, the 84-foot tall granite monument was unveiled and
dedicated to commemorate the battle at Tu-Endie-Wei State Park in Mason
County. Additional monuments and historical markers commemorate the battle as
well as Native American history, including a memorial for Shawnee Chief
   Cornstalk.
📌"Tu-Endie-Wei" is a Wyandotte word that means "point between two waters."

   #HappyLaborDay!

Do you know the history behind today's federal holiday?

Labor Day is celebrated to recognize American workers. It was created in the
late nineteenth century by labor activists seeking recognition for American
workers during a time when quality of life was heavily impacted by
industrialization. Labor Day was sought to be a celebration of the countless
contributions workers have on America's strength and prosperity...and a day
that workers could have to rest and relax.

The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in NYC and
   included the country's first #LaborDayParade.

On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the law that designated
the first Monday in September of each year to be the nationally recognized
   Labor Day holiday.

#September is here! This month's #ArtifactSpotlight brings us to the table
pictured here and on display in Discovery Room 4: Frontier Life. It was made
by John P. Hale from the surviving boards of the former #FortLee blockhouse
in #CharlestonWV that was destroyed by fire in 1891.

   Bonus Information:
🔨 Hale was one of the founding members of the West Virginia Historical and
Antiquarian Society, the predecessor to the State Archives and State Museum.
🍞 One of the other artifacts pictured is a paddle for mixing dough from the
   #LewisburgWV area in #GreenbrierCountyWV circa 1850.
