GITHUB NEXT | VITALE

As software developers we understand the importance of a tight feedback loop.
When we can get instant syntax- and type-checking, rapid runs of the tests
affected by a change, or live previews of the UI, then we can go fast with
confidence, correcting little mistakes in logic or design before they become big
ones.

DRAGÖNSTEEL

Inspired by heavy metal logos, 1980s role-playing games, and maybe dragons and
dusty, leather-bound books, Dragönsteel is our take on a modern-ish blackletter

liberties to add a bit of friendliness to an otherwise serious style of type.

SHIFT HAPPENS: A BOOK ABOUT KEYBOARDS

It’s a book about typists competing during the Shift Wars of the 1880s;
Nobel-prize winner Arthur Schawlow using a laser to build the best typo eraser;
August Dvorak – and many others – trying to dethrone QWERTY; Margaret Longley
and Lenore Fenton perfecting touch typing; Soviet agents listening to American
keystrokes; women pouring into offices, eager to do more than typing and
re-typing; people aspiring to make the best mechanical keyboard today by
blending the past and the future.

#CSS now has `round()` and it's a big deal!

unlike say, Sass `math.round()`, this is much more powerful because it can round
across units, and at runtime.

this is super useful when you have something like a percentage value that
normally evaluates to a fractional pixel value.

```
top: 50%; /* computes to 662.27px */
top: round(50%, 1px); /* computes to 662px */
```

rounding such values will make them fit better in the pixel grid, avoiding
potential blurring issues on some (windows) devices

- I like CSS partials
- I like layering partials on import
- I like avoiding build steps

The simplest option is:

<style>
@layer reset, config, etc;
@import url('reset.css') layer(reset);
@import url('config/colors.css') layer(config);
@import url('config/sizes.css') layer(config);
@import url('config/fonts.css') layer(config);
@import url('default/type.css') layer(default);
/* etc… */
</style>

But I have a decades-old fear of 'too many' imports. Is that a real, modern
concern?

MERE DESCRIPTION

Describing what we see is harder than it seems, as it requires careful
observation and interpretation. Good descriptions can transform ordinary details
into something beautiful and expressive. Great writing often transcends mere
description by capturing unique perspectives and emotions.

“WEIRD” IS A REBUKE TO REPUBLICAN DOMINANCE POLITICS

Democrats are using the term "weird" to describe certain Republican behaviors
and beliefs. This includes their intense focus on issues like women's rights and
family control that seem disconnected from reality. The term serves as a way to
highlight what they view as extreme or nonsensical actions by Republicans.

DIGITAL TOOLS I WISH EXISTED

The author expresses frustration with the difficulty of finding, organizing, and
sharing digital content, which often leads to feeling overwhelmed. They wish for
digital tools that streamline content processing, improve recommendations, and
enhance note-taking features across various formats. Ultimately, the goal is to
create a more efficient way to discover, retain, and share knowledge in a
digital world.

HOW “INDUSTRY” MADE PRESTIGE TV FOR THE TIKTOK ERA | THE NEW YORKER

The show "Industry" blends the fast-paced world of finance with TikTok culture,
introducing characters who balance corporate life with social media fame. Its
third season is marked by energetic storytelling and a frenetic style, appealing
to viewers with quick plot twists and high-intensity visuals. As the series
evolves, it reflects a modern attitude where ambition and self-promotion
dominate the workplace.

THE ART OF DITHERING AND RETRO SHADING FOR THE WEB

This article explains how to use dithering techniques in web graphics to create
a retro shading effect. By analyzing pixel luminance and applying a Bayer
Matrix, the technique allows for a greater perception of shades in a grayscale
scene. The author also discusses color quantization and various methods to
enhance visual details while maintaining a unique aesthetic in 3D art.

EVERYTHING THAT TURNED OUT WELL IN MY LIFE FOLLOWED THE SAME DESIGN PROCESS

To create a fulfilling life, pay attention to what makes you feel alive and
adjust your path based on the feedback from your experiences. Instead of forcing
a specific vision, embrace the unfolding process by observing your context and
acting on new information. With practice and a willingness to adapt, you can
design a life that aligns with your true interests and values.

TELEVISION (PUBLISHED 1971)

Television serves as a crucial escape for many Americans, providing
companionship and relief from loneliness. Despite its negative reputation, it
has become deeply integrated into daily life, often replacing real human
connections. While some viewers are aware of their addiction to TV, they
struggle to disconnect from a medium that offers constant entertainment and
distraction.

15 CRAFTING THE NUT

The nut graph is a key part of an article that summarizes its main focus,
including important details like who, what, when, where, why, and how. It is
usually one or two sentences long and helps guide the structure of the entire
story. Crafting a strong nut graph is crucial for effectively communicating the
article's purpose to readers.

THE WAY WE INTERACT WITH APPS IS CHANGING, SO SHOULD THE WAY THEY ARE DESIGNED.

The way we interact with apps is evolving, requiring a new design approach that
focuses on actions rather than just phone interfaces. Designers should
prioritize understanding user needs and the context in which actions occur, as
apps now exist across multiple platforms. By embracing an action-centered
design, apps can better integrate into the larger ecosystem of devices and
enhance user experiences.

THE 30-YEAR MORTGAGE IS AN INTRINSICALLY TOXIC PRODUCT

The 30-year mortgage in the US is considered dangerous because it ties
homeowners to risky bets on local real estate markets. This system, supported by
government guarantees, can lead to economic instability and inflated housing
prices. As a result, many Americans end up over-invested in residential real
estate, affecting their financial well-being and economic mobility.

DESIGNING DEPTH

Composition is key in visual media, as it transforms a 3D world into a 2D frame
while conveying depth and story. Techniques like "dirtying the frame" with
foreground elements enhance visual interest and emotional impact. In both
filmmaking and software design, adding layers and motion creates a more engaging
experience for the viewer or user.

SHOULD YOU PURSUE A CAREER IN DESIGN ENGINEERING?

The article explores the role of design engineers, who blend design and coding
skills to improve product development. It highlights how they contribute through
prototyping, building design systems, and refining user interfaces. As the field
grows, there are increasing opportunities for individuals to pursue a
multidisciplinary career in design engineering.

MINI-CURE FOR DOOMSCROLLING

The author reflects on the negative impacts of "doomscrolling" through social
media, especially during difficult times. She shares her personal experience of
using a phone lockbox to limit her scrolling and regain a sense of control. The
piece raises questions about the future of social media use, especially for
children, and suggests that change is needed to improve mental health.

WHEN TO DESIGN FOR EMERGENCE

Design for emergence is a paradigm that gives the end-user control and allows
for open-ended design. It is a response to the long-tail problem, where
individual user needs may not appear important enough to invest resources in.
Design for emergence prioritizes adaptability and allows the end-user to
integrate their local knowledge into the design process. It is a departure from
high modern design and user-centered design, which prioritize control and
homogenization. Design for emergence has historical roots and has become
financially viable with the rise of software-as-a-service models. Examples of
design for emergence include HyperCard and modern platforms like Notion and
ClickUp.

PRISM: MAPPING INTERPRETABLE CONCEPTS AND FEATURES IN A LATENT SPACE OF LANGUAGE

Sparse autoencoders can reveal human-interpretable features in text embedding
models. Semantic edits can be made in the latent space of language models for
precise modifications. Automated scoring methods can efficiently evaluate the
quality of features discovered by sparse autoencoders.

IN THIS ESSAY I WILL: ON DISTRACTION

The text explores the theme of distraction through the lens of writing and
reading, touching on the challenges of focus and the allure of diverse
interests. Bouvard and Pécuchet, the protagonists, exemplify the struggle
between seeking knowledge and getting sidetracked by new passions. The essay
delves into the complexities of attention, productivity, and the constant
temptation of distractions in daily life.

THE THING THAT GETS YOU TO THE THING

The author reflects on rewatching the TV show "Halt and Catch Fire," expressing
a deep connection to the characters and their development over the seasons. The
show's evolution, particularly in character dynamics and personal growth, is
highlighted as a significant aspect of its appeal. The author appreciates the
complex relationships portrayed in the series and finds comfort in the realistic
depiction of family dynamics, acknowledging the deep emotional impact of the
characters' journeys. The document emphasizes the show's ability to capture the
essence of personal growth and self-acceptance through the characters'
transformative experiences and relationships.

IMAGE TO PROMPT - HOW TO REVERSE ENGINEER A PROMPT FROM JUST AN IMAGE

The text discusses how to reverse engineer a prompt from an image using AI tools
and techniques. It explores the morality of creating similar images and provides
methods to generate prompts from images. By understanding art styles and using
tools like CLIP, you can create your own images from inspiration found online.

NEW LIBERAL ARTS

The text discusses the evolution of liberal arts in the twenty-first century,
emphasizing the importance of creativity, exploration, and growth in learning.
It also touches on the significance of journalism and storytelling in shaping
society and building community in the digital age. The new liberal arts aim to
integrate various fields, including creativity, media, and culture, to navigate
the complexities of modern life.

TURNING THE TABLES ON AI

Artificial Intelligence is becoming prevalent in tech companies, offering a
"think less" approach. The text encourages using AI to prompt critical thinking
and create original content. It emphasizes the importance of owning and refining
AI-generated content to enhance writing skills.

ROBIN SLOAN: BINDING THE MOON

An interview with Robin Sloan about his novel Moonbound, a sci-fi adventure that
captivates from the first page. Sloan discusses the influence of geography on
the book's creation and how it engages with AI and speculative elements. The
conversation delves into genre, scale, and the importance of "planetary writing"
in storytelling.

LARES SMART HOME ASSISTANT: A TOY AI AGENT DEMONSTRATING EMERGENT BEHAVIOR

Lares is an AI agent in a smart home simulation that can interact with the
environment using function calls. The agent follows user instructions, makes
decisions based on its knowledge, and can exhibit emergent behavior. The
approach showcases how simple AI agents can solve basic problems and may have
practical applications in controlling smart home devices.

WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LISTEN TO WHILE DESIGNING?

Mariana, a Senior Product Designer at Vercel, finds inspiration in her daily
routine, including open water swimming and personal projects. She values taste
and craft in art and design, constantly seeking new sources of inspiration like
traveling and appreciating art. Mariana emphasizes the importance of practice
and exposure to great design for ambitious designers, offering a UI Engineering
course for those interested.

RESEARCH AS LEISURE ACTIVITY

The text discusses the concept of "research as leisure activity," emphasizing
intellectual inquiry driven by passion and curiosity outside traditional
academic settings. It highlights how individuals, including writers and cultural
critics, engage in research as a form of leisurely pursuit to connect ideas and
broaden their understanding. The idea suggests that research can be a fulfilling
and enriching activity for anyone dedicated to intellectual exploration.

UI DENSITY

Interfaces are becoming less dense, focusing on providing valuable information
over time. UI density involves both visual and information density, aiming to
maximize value for users. Designing for UI density involves making intentional
design decisions to enhance user experience.

OPEN YOUR MIND

The document delves into a detailed exploration of how space is perceived and
utilized in design, particularly focusing on digital product design. It
discusses the importance of understanding the purpose of space and how it
relates to surrounding elements, introducing the concept of semantic spacing
tokens for better communication and systematization. The document also covers
the application of density shifts to manage relationships and spacing within
design systems, providing guidelines for using CSS to implement spacing tokens
effectively. Ultimately, it emphasizes the significance of designers using a
shared language to control space and density in designs for a more cohesive and
user-centric experience.

MEANINGLESS CURVES AHEAD

The text discusses the challenge of creating a semantic nested rounding system
for design elements, focusing on how to calculate rounding values based on
element relationships. It explores difficulties in determining these values and
suggests starting from the bottom to establish a base rounding level for all
nested elements. Ultimately, the text concludes that creating a comprehensive
layout system may be more practical than trying to implement a semantic nested
rounding approach.

ON THE IMPORTANCE OF STARING DIRECTLY INTO THE SUN

The text discusses the concept of the "illusion of explanatory depth," where
people think they understand things better than they actually do. It explains
how this illusion can hinder scientific progress by preventing us from realizing
our gaps in knowledge. The author uses examples from history to show how
challenging it can be to uncover the least obvious truths due to our
preconceived notions.

BUILD YOUR OWN HTMX

The text discusses replicating the core functionality of HTMX in a simplified
manner. It emphasizes implementing essential features like triggers and event
handling. The goal is to achieve basic HTMX functionality without worrying about
advanced attributes at this stage.

HEAT DEATH OF THE INTERNET

The internet is becoming harder to navigate with different prices and confusing
content on apps and websites. People are facing challenges like excessive ads,
unclear information, and disrupted services. Overall, the online experience is
becoming more frustrating and complex for users.

A CLOSER LOOK AT PARISIAN STREETS

Haussmann transformed Paris by creating wide boulevards and uniform building
facades for public health and housing needs during the Second Empire. While
initially criticized for monotony, the Haussmannian streets eventually allowed
for architectural expression and ornamentation, reflecting the changing tastes
of the time. Despite early constraints, the regulations were later relaxed,
leading to more ornate and individualistic building designs in Paris.

THE REVENGE OF THE HOME PAGE | THE NEW YORKER

Digital journalism is shifting back to traditional home pages as social media
becomes less reliable. Publications like The Verge and Semafor have seen success
with redesigned home pages. The trend highlights a return to loyal audiences
seeking curated content directly from trusted sources.

challenging. It highlights how the mindset of venture capitalists and the
pressure to follow "The Apple Way" can impact startup success. The example of
Humane's struggles and the importance of understanding market dynamics and
customer needs are emphasized.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MODERN CSS (SPRING 2024 EDITION)

This text explains new features in modern CSS, such as Container Queries for
styling based on container size. It also covers topics like View Transitions,
Nesting, and Cascade Layers for more efficient and powerful CSS styling.
Additionally, it introduces concepts like Anchor Positioning, Scoping, and the
color-mix() function to enhance CSS capabilities.

WHEN “SEMANTIC TOKENS” ARE NO LONGER SEMANTIC.

Design tokens are a fundamental practice in design systems, divided into
primitive, semantic, and component tokens, each playing a crucial role in system
creation. Semantic tokens, an abstract layer referencing primitive tokens, are
vital for making design choices while maintaining flexibility. However, the
challenge lies in finding the balance between overly generic or overly specific
semantic tokens to ensure clear intent and scalability across diverse design
scenarios. The key is to establish the right level of abstraction and common
associations to create semantic tokens that are impactful and adaptable to
various use cases within a design system.

BLUESKY’S STACKABLE APPROACH TO MODERATION

Bluesky aims to empower users by letting them shape their online social spaces.
They have introduced Ozone, an open-source moderation tool that allows
collaborative content review and labeling. Users can now run their independent
moderation services within the Bluesky app, offering unprecedented control over
their social media experience. The platform emphasizes safety, customization,
and user empowerment through a stackable ecosystem of moderation services.

DESIGN SYSTEM GENERATIONS

Generational change in a design system involves recognizing triggers for change,
understanding scope, and assessing the scale of the impact on adopters. Changes
can be internally or externally driven, requiring communication,
consensus-building, and planning to ensure a smooth transition. Updating design
assets and code packages, along with documentation, is crucial during a
generational shift. Tools, practices, and testing methods may need to evolve
alongside the design system to support the changes effectively. It's essential
to consider the implications of these changes on adopters, communicate
effectively, and prioritize long-term values to successfully navigate a design
system generation.

OKAY, COLOR SPACES

Color spaces are constructs that help predict color mixes and matches, with CIE
XYZ being a useful one developed in 1931 by the International Commission on
Illumination. Unlike perceptually uniform color spaces like CIELAB, CIE XYZ
struggles with creating even gradients and transitions between colors. While
color perception complexities make achieving perfect color spaces challenging,
new models like Oklab aim to improve color tasks in digital contexts by
transforming CIE XYZ data to better fit color comparisons.

DESIGNING FOR SUPPORT TEAMS

Designing for ops and support teams requires a different approach than designing
for consumer apps. When creating dashboards for these teams, it's important to
consider factors such as the user not being the customer, the need for all
relevant information to be on one page, the importance of navigation speed, the
value of consistency in design, the usefulness of keyboard shortcuts, the need
for easy copy-pasting, the benefits of server-side rendering, the value of
logging and displaying actions, the importance of sharing links, the role of
URLs as part of the UI, and the usefulness of exporting to CSV. By considering
these factors, designers can create user-friendly and efficient tools for ops
and support teams.

CORY DOCTOROW: WHAT KIND OF BUBBLE IS AI?

AI is a bubble that exhibits all the hallmarks of a classic tech bubble. The
largest AI models are expensive to make and run, and there is a lot of fraud
within the industry. AI companies are betting that their customers will buy AI
for highly consequential automation and fire workers, but early indicators
suggest that this bet won't pay off. The universe of low-stakes, high-dollar
applications for AI is so small that it may not be enough to keep the commercial
Big AI sector running.

A UNIFIED THEORY OF FUCKS

The author presents a theory of "fucks" in which people are born with a finite
number of them. When they run out, they are gone forever. However, the author
has since revised this theory to include the idea that one can give and receive
"fucks" from others. The author argues that it is important to give "fucks" to
living things, such as people, the environment, and oneself, rather than to
institutions or systems. The author suggests that good work is the art of giving
a "fuck" about the living.

THE "BASELINE" SCENE WAS ACTUALLY WRITTEN BY RYAN GOSLING

In the movie Blade Runner 2049, the "baseline test" scene, which is one of the
favorite scenes of the author, was actually written by Ryan Gosling. The
baseline test is a fictional test in the movie that involves asking
uncomfortable questions to determine if a replicant (synthetic human) is
becoming more human. The author discovers that Gosling used a technique called
"dropping in" to analyze writing from the book "Pale Fire" by Nabokov in order
to understand his character. The technique involves creating a spontaneous,
emotional connection to words, and it is used by actors at Shakespeare & Co. The
baseline test in the movie is a twisted adaptation of this technique, where the
replicant is taught to suppress emotional associations with the text.

IF IT DOESN’T SHIP, THEN IT DOESN’T COUNT

The author reflects on their perspective as a designer and the importance of
shipping their work. They express frustration when their designs are not
implemented or abandoned, feeling like their efforts were wasted. They also
acknowledge the impact on their reputation as a designer if their work doesn't
make it to production. The author sees the importance of learning from these
experiences and improving their skills. Ultimately, they question the purpose of
their designs if they are not out in the world helping people.

SCALING DIGITAL STRATEGY IN COMPLEX ORGANIZATIONS

In this podcast episode, Josh Clark from Big Medium discusses the challenges
that big, complex organizations face when trying to scale their digital design
and delivery. He emphasizes the importance of improving processes to achieve
faster time to market and better outcomes for customers, especially in times of
economic uncertainty. While design systems are valuable for scaling design and
development, Josh highlights that they are not enough on their own. He stresses
the need for leadership commitment and a collaborative process to make design
systems truly effective. Josh also shares strategies for making the financial
case for efficiency-building efforts and aligning them with business goals.

EIGENQUESTIONS: THE ART OF FRAMING PROBLEMS

This document discusses the art of framing problems, particularly in the context
of decision-making and problem-solving. The author shares their experiences at
YouTube and Coda, where they developed techniques for framing problems
effectively. One example they provide is the "link out" question at YouTube,
where they reframed the debate as a choice between consistency and
comprehensiveness. They also emphasize the importance of finding the right
question (eigenquestion) to guide the decision-making process and highlight the
inclusive nature of framing, which involves incorporating diverse perspectives.
The document concludes by offering tips and techniques for becoming a skilled
framer.

A LIBRARY OF WORDS

Roget's Thesaurus is not just a synonym dictionary, but a unique and interesting
library of words. It was created by Peter Mark Roget, a Victorian polymath, who
wanted to classify and organize words in the English language. Unlike a
dictionary, which explains the meaning of words, the Thesaurus helps users find
words to express ideas. However, many publishers have organized the Thesaurus
alphabetically, which destroys its unique categorization system. The original
edition, with its side-by-side layout and opposing categories, is a more
sophisticated and powerful tool for writers and thinkers.

EIGENSOLUTIONS: COMPOSABILITY AS THE ANTIDOTE TO OVERFIT

Eigensolutions are solutions that generalize so much that they expose links
between seemingly unrelated use cases, in contrast to overfitting, which occurs
when solutions are too specific and don't generalize sufficiently. Designing
eigensolutions requires a shift from linear design to composability, where
solutions are designed as compositions of smaller, more general features.
Creator tools, such as developer tools and design tools, often face challenges
in addressing diverse use cases and balancing UX, use case coverage, and design
effort. To address this, designers can prioritize low floors and high ceilings,
implement higher level abstractions as shortcuts, and consider layering with
lower level primitives. Shipping eigensolutions can be challenging due to the
higher engineering effort required, but they can provide a broader set of use
cases and improve the user experience.

In many practices, designers face a shift from designing discrete artifacts to
creating conditions in which dynamic systems can thrive and evolve. Designers
must embrace working with *systems of systems* (information-product-service
ecologies, other socio-technical systems, and nature itself). They must also
embrace designing conditions for others to design; the *design of design*
(meta-design, developing platforms on which others build).

— How Might We Help Designers Understand Systems? (sciencedirect.com)
