Violin Teaching


ABOUT ME

I began playing the violin, at the age of 7, in my hometown of Drogheda. I
started at The Sound Shop School of Music under the guidance of local teacher,
Niamh Tiernan.

I completed Grade 3 in my first year and was awarded a scholarship to the Royal
Irish Academy of Music (RIAM). At the academy, I studied with renowned teachers
Geraldine O'Grady, Ide deBurca, and Maeve Broderick. I continued my musical
development with Maeve Broderick, both during my Diploma in Teaching and
Performance and while pursuing my Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance.

While studying at the academy, I led both the Intermediate and Symphony
Orchestras. Additionally, I had the privilege of leading the RIAM Chamber
Orchestra when they accompanied the internationally acclaimed pianist and
teacher, John O'Conor on a tour of South Korea, Japan, and China. I was also a
multiple Feis Ceoil winner during my time there and a member of both junior and
senior National Youth Orchestras of Ireland

In 2008, after completing my Bachelor's Degree, I was invited to participate in
a summer course organised by the United States Department of State. This
afforded me the opportunity to collaborate with talented musicians from the
United States, Brazil, India, Mali, and South Africa and helped me broaden my
musical horizons and foster lifelong connections.

Since completing my Bachelor's Degree, I have been actively engaged as a
freelance violinist. I've performed with orchestras such as the RTE National
Symphony Orchestra, RTE Concert Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, and other notable
ensembles. This has allowed me to share the stage with some of the industry's
finest artists, including Pavarotti, Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line, The Way We
Were), Jon Lord (Deep Purple), Jeff Wayne (War of the Worlds), Zoe Conway, Jeff
Mills, Martin Hayes, Planxty, Ramin Djawadi (Game of Thrones), and Lalo Schifrin
(Dirty Harry, Mission Impossible, Bullit), to name just a few. I've also
recorded with national and international artists, as well as contributing to
various movie scores, further expanding my artistic range.

In 2016, I completed a Masters in Music Technology at the University of
Limerick. This advanced program deepened my understanding of the intersection
between music and technology, enhancing my creativity and versatility as a
musician.

Throughout my musical journey, I've also worked with a diverse collective of
musicians, visual artists, and DJs known as External Sounds. Over the course of
a decade, I actively contributed to the development and operation of our own
nightclub, The Purple Room. Additionally, I curated tent venues at renowned
festivals such as Electric Picnic and Body and Soul, bringing captivating
musical experiences to enthusiastic audiences.


TEACHING & EDUCATION


INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION OF MUSICIANS

As I reflect on my journey as a violinist, I am filled with immense gratitude
for the opportunities and experiences that have shaped me into the musician I am
today. Now, I am excited to embark on a new chapter in my musical career as a
dedicated teacher and mentor and away from the freelance orchestral scene.

While I do not teach to a certain school (Suzuki, Koday) the lineage of my
teaching can be traced as far back as Vivaldi. My own mentor, Maeve Broderick,
was a student of Max Rostal, who himself was a student of Karl Flesch and so on

I wish to guide and inspire aspiring violinists, nurturing their talents and
instilling in them the same passion and dedication that fueled me. Drawing from
my background in music education and performance, I am committed to providing my
students with a supportive and enriching learning environment.

I believe that every student possesses a unique musical voice, waiting to be
discovered and developed. Through personalised instruction tailored to their
individual goals and aspirations.

In my teaching approach, I aim to foster not only technical proficiency but also
artistic expression and creativity. I encourage my students to explore various
genres and musical styles, broadening their horizons and igniting their
imagination. Together, we will delve into the rich tapestry of classical
repertoire, embrace the vibrant world of contemporary music, and uncover the joy
of musical collaboration, whether it be in a string quartet, small ensemble or
symphony orchestra.

I try to provide my students with meaningful performance opportunities. Whether
it be through studio recitals, ensemble performances, or participation in local
events, I will empower them to shine and share their music with others.

As a mentor, I am not only dedicated to nurturing their musical skills but also
to fostering their personal growth and confidence. I strive to create a positive
and nurturing learning environment where students feel empowered to take risks,
embrace challenges, and develop resilience. I am here to guide them through
their musical journey, offering guidance, support, and unwavering belief in
their potential.


FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What level are your pupils?

I teach beginners, intermediate, advanced and mature students.

Beginner students are children who haven’t previously played the violin. They
can be as young as 4 and as old as 12 years of age. I offer a consultation
lesson for students and parents to see if the student enjoys the lesson.

Intermediate students are students covering grades 1 to 8 (RIAM/ABRSM) and also
students preparing for state examinations (Junior & Leaving Certificates).

Advanced students are students who have completed all grades and intend pursuing
diplomas and 3rd level education.

I have a limited number of spaces available for mature students. These students
range from returning to the violin after a spell away or even those wishing to
take up a hobby in their spare time.

Are classes in groups or one-to-one?

I do not teach group classes, only one-to-one lessons.

When are classes?

I teach Monday to Friday, morning to evening. I try to cater for all my
students, finding an optimal day and time for them.

How long are classes?

My classes are 40 minutes long. For advanced students classes will be an hour
minimum.

How much are classes?

A 40 minute lesson is €30, while the hour lesson is €50.

What musical exams do you prepare students for?

I prepare students for both the Royal Irish Academy of Music examinations (RIAM)
and also the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music examinations
(ABRSM).

Do you help teenagers prepare for Junior and Leaving Certificate exams?

Absolutely, even if they have never played the violin going into First Year, I
can prepare them for both Junior and Leaving Certificates.

Do you take adults too?

Sure! You’re never too late to get started.

Do you need to have your own violin to take lessons and if so, where might you
buy one and how much might this cost?

Yes, all students must have their own violin and bow. But don’t worry, for the
first couple of lessons a violin and bow will not be necessary so you will have
time to choose the correct one.

The local Sound Shop is a good place to look for a violin. They understand the
needs of the student when choosing an instrument. Prices can range from €150 -
€300 for beginner instruments. I will help in choosing a suitable instrument.

My classes are held on Beamore Road, Drogheda. Parking is available on site.
