SOME OF THE BEST THINGS TO DO ON THE BIG ISLAND

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CAPTAIN COOK BAY

BIG ISLAND'S PREMIER SNORKEL DESTINATION

Captain Cook Bay (aka Kealakekua Bay) is one of Hawai'i's most spectacular coral
reefs. Because it is a Marine Life Conservation District fish are plentiful and
swarm over the well developed reef that slopes steeply from the shore into the
nearby deep water. Spinner dolphins are also commonly seen resting in the Bay.
The surrounding area contains many historical and archeological sites such as
religious temples, or heiaus, and includes the spot where the first European
settler to reach the islands, Captain James Cook, was murdered.

KILAUEA VOLCANO

Kīlauea was created around 300,00 to 600,000 years ago as tectonic plates
shifted over the Hawaiian hotspot in the earth’s underlying mantle, and it
continues daily to lay down some of the newest land on the planet. The best way
to see the magnificent and powerful forces of Pele, goddess of fire, is by
helicopter, but much can be learned on guided expeditions too. Kīlauea’s lava is
not currently flowing into the ocean however this otherwordly sight is worth
seeing.

artist enclaves. It is the birthplace of King Kamehameha, the first ruler of
