The girl's grandmother attended the candlelight vigil held outside her primary
school at Tweed Heads. Several friends, teachers and classmates spoke about
their… memories of Charlise – expressing their shock and sadness.

The parent of an accused child killer has described her son had lived a
"tortured" life and how she was against his relationship with Charlise Mutten's
mother.

Annemie Stein, the mother of Justin Stein, who allegedly killed Charlise last
week before he stuffed her body inside a barrel and dumped it by the Colo River
in the Blue Mountains, did not support the love affair with Kallista Mutten.

"Justin's had a pretty tortured life," Ms Stein revealed to  The Daily Telegraph
from her inner west property in Sydney.

"You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink, or choose their
partners, and sometimes it ends up in a headache like this one."

Ms Mutten, who is reportedly pregnant with Stein's child, first started her
relationship with the 31-year-old around a year ago.

She had previous run-ins with the law including a two-year stint in jail after
killing a friend while high on methamphetamines.

Ms Mutten received a three year sentence with a non-parole of two years for
dangerous driving occasioning death after she attempted to overtake a
semi-trailer in north-eastern New South Wales before she crashed.

There is no suggestion she is a current drug user.

Police have briefly spoken to Ms Mutten who is under medical supervision in
hospital after she broke down following the disappearance of her daughter.

Ms Stein has been left devastated by the alleged actions of her 31-year-old son
on his nine-year-old step child.

She described what was supposed to be her future step-granddaughter as a "lovely
little beautiful girl" who did not deserve to have her life cut short.

Stein's father, James Stein Snr, said he had never met Charlise due to the
fractured family, but was still "heartbroken" after he heard the news.

"It's a tragedy, I'd never met her, so there you go," he said.

Mr Stein Snr and Ms Stein have been separated for more than a decade. It's
believed their eldest son, James Jnr, has not seen Justin for five years.

in Mt Wilson in the Blue Mountains before she disappeared last week. Picture: 9
News

Stein came from a wealthy family who owned the lavish Wildenstein wedding venue,
two hours from Sydney, where celebrities such as AFL star Buddy Franklin and
former Miss Universe Australia Jesinta Campbell, tied the knot in mid-2017.

He was among Sydney's elite in the early part of his life after being taught at
all-boys school Cranbrook in the affluent Sydney suburb of Bellevue Hill.

Tuition fees at the highly regarded school start from $26,000 for kindergarten
children to $73,536 for boarding school students.

Stein mixed among the elite where he was taught at private all-boys school
Cranbrook, in the affluent suburb of Bellevue Hill.

NSW Police will allege Stein killed his fiancé's child some time between 7pm on
January 11 and 10am of January 12.

He is accused of driving his red ute across Sydney, towing a boat with
Charlise's body inside, where he was captured on CCTV camera at Bunnings
purchasing 100 kilograms of sandbags to help hide the corpse.

Police believe Stein purchased the sandbags to take onto a boat located at a
dock in inner Sydney where he planned to dump the body in a waterway.

But his plan unravelled after he failed to launch the boat from the dock.

Authorities will further allege the weight combination of Charlise, the sand,
and the barrel was too heavy for Stein to lift.

Instead he dumped the barrel in dense, rugged bushland on the edge of the Colo
River, around one hour from the family's property, where it sat for at least
five days before it was found by a team of officers late on Tuesday night.

Charlise normally lives with her grandmother, following the stint behind bars of
Ms Mutten, in the Queensland suburb of Coolangatta, but allowed her down to
Sydney to spend time with her mother for the school holidays.

The schoolgirl stayed with Stein and Ms Mutten at the Mt Wilson property before
she was reported missing on last Thursday night, however, it was not reported
until the next morning.

Stein was refused bail in Central Local Court on Wednesday morning.

The court heard he required large doses of drugs to help him cope with mental
health issues.

He will face Penrith Local Court on March 18.
