CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE PRACTICE

OUR APPROACH

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that has been
used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses for more than 3,000 years. At
Roots, we aim to balance the ancient knowledge of Chinese Medicine with
contemporary research, working to help our patients in their recovery from a
wide range of conditions through an integrative practice that stimulates the
body’s own healing mechanisms. Working alongside Western medical practice, we
believe in a holistic approach that takes into account the entire person rather
than only the individual symptom - assessing all factors including external or
environmental factors, your internal emotions, and lifestyle.
Visit our information page here, or learn more about our treatments or
conditions commonly treated with TCM.

THE PRACTICE

Roots is our new clinic for Traditional Chinese Medicine based on Edgware Road
in Central London. We are committed to following traditional values and using
tested techniques in a contemporary setting, providing a wide range of
professional services which are individually tailored to all of our clients. Our
knowledgeable and welcoming consultants are on hand to educate, inform and
provide treatments for an array of ailments. The practicing doctor, Dr Lucy Xu
Hang, is a qualified member of the Royal College of Physicians and has studied
traditional techniques extensively in both the UK and Beijing. Please feel free
to ask, explore and experience all that Root has to offer and see how we can
help you today.

IS TCM RIGHT FOR ME?

CHINESE MEDICINE IS EXPERIENTIAL MEDICINE

This means that it has been learned and perfected through practice rather than
theory, and whilst research and methods of treatment have developed over time -
the basis of TCM has remained true to its roots. Put simply, TCM is based on an
understanding of opposing energies within the body (yin and yang) which, when
out of balance, can negatively affect your health. As a whole this energetic
system is known as qi. When there is too little or too much qi in one of the
body's energy pathways, called meridians, or when the flow of qi is blocked, it
causes illness. The aim of TCM is to restore balance to the body by promoting
the natural flow of qi through a variety of treatments such as acupres... read
moresure, cupping or oxicombustion - in this way promoting both physical and
mental wellbeing. Slowly over time the medicinal value of herbs were learned,
acupuncture meridians were mapped and the complex theories of the medicine were
developed. This knowledge has been passed from generation to generation - both
learning from and effectively curing many millions of people. In this way, TCM
has become an extremely unique and balanced way of thinking about the body -
which unlike Western medicine, looks at symptoms in relation to the wider whole
rather than in isolation. As an example, TCM thinks of the body's internal
organs not only as individual structures but also as 5 complex networks, in
which qi flows through organ systems by way of meridians. The kidney, for
example, represents the entire urinary system along with the adrenal glands,
located on top of the kidneys. The heart, meanwhile, represents both the heart
and the brain. While we would always advise seeking conventional medical help
alongside alternative treatments, we strongly believe that TCM - which draws on
this wealth of first hand knowledge - can provide a thorough augmentative
approach to overall health. less
