FIGHTING MARIJUANA ADDICTION IN AUSTRALIA

Fighting Marijuana Addiction in Australia is a very huge topic as the number of
people that use the drug is on the rise.

Marijuana is gaining popularity in Australia as individual states have moved to
make the drug legal. About 13% of Australian adults use cannabis products. The
plant has historically been used recreationally for its mind-altering effects,
which can include enhanced senses and changes in mood. In some states, doctors
can prescribe marijuana for medicinal uses such as reducing muscle spasms, pain,
nausea, and vomiting.

But cannabis may have harmful long- and short-term effects, such as paranoia and
memory loss, and it can be addictive and disrupt a user’s life and
relationships.

Synthetic cannabinoids, compounds manufactured to replicate individual chemicals
found in marijuana, are much more potent than marijuana and therefore could be
more dangerous. Doctors in New South Wales treat patients for marijuana use
disorder and are conducting leading research to advance therapies to treat it
and to better understand the effects of marijuana on the brain.


CAN I BECOME ADDICTED TO MARIJUANA?

Contrary to popular belief, people can become addicted to Marijuana. Continued,
frequent and heavy marijuana use can cause physical dependency and addiction.

Some people can develop tolerance to the effects of marijuana. Tolerance is
characterized by a need for larger doses of a drug to maintain the same effects.
Tolerance can develop after a few doses. In some people, tolerance can
eventually lead to physical dependence and/or addiction.

Addiction can develop at any age, but youth are especially vulnerable because
their brains are still developing.

Some people are also more prone to becoming addicted than others. It’s estimated
that 1 in 3 who use marijuana will develop a problem with their use. It’s also
estimated that 1 in 11 (9%) of those who use marijuana will develop an
addiction to it. This statistic rises to about 1 in 6 (17%) for people who
started using marijuana as a teenager. If a person smokes marijuana daily, the
risk of addiction is 25% to 50%.

Problematic marijuana use can include some or all of these behaviors:

 * failing to fulfill major duties at
   * work
   * home
   * school
 * giving up important social, occupational or recreational activities because
   of marijuana use
 * consuming it often and in larger amounts or over a longer period than
   intended
 * being unable to cut down on or control marijuana use

If you show most or all of these behaviors over a 12-month period you may have
cannabis addiction.


COMPARING MARIJUANA TO OTHER SUBSTANCES

All substances that affect the mind carry their own set of risks and harms, some
unique to the substance. The most well-established, long term harm of regular
marijuana use is addiction. It is often difficult to compare risks and harms
between substances. Nevertheless, based on what is currently known, the risk of
marijuana addiction is lower than the risk of addiction to alcohol, tobacco or
opioids. And, unlike substances such as alcohol or opioids where overdoses may
be fatal, a marijuana overdose is not fatal.
