Dolores Huerta & LCAC-19 Finale: Building Health Equity In Latinx Communities
6/29/2021
Dolores Huerta: Building Health Equity In Latinx Communities w/LCAC-19 Finale

The Latino Coalition Against COVID-19
https://www.lcac19.org

A new study from The University of Washington (IHME) suggests 905,000 have died
from COVID-19 in The U.S., more than double the official death toll reported by
the CDC. Yet, with almost half of the demographic data missing in every state,
we don't have a full picture of the extent of the disparities. However, suppose
we impute the missing data and recognize that Latinos make up 18.5% of the U.S.
population but account for 21.3% of deaths nationally. In that case, the total
death count due to COVID-19 for the Latino population is over 190,000.

In response to these issues, we formed the Latino Coalition Against COVID-19, a
national community-led, non-partisan, collaborative movement to build health
equity in Latinx communities. We come together to help transform the social and
economic conditions in Latinx communities by making connections with other
organizations, task forces, coalitions, and alliances to amplify local voices to
a national level. By forming meaningful partnerships facilitated by active
collaboration and shared decision-making, our collective efforts can change
public policy, reallocate funding to those who need it most, and improve the
health and well-being of Latinx communities across the country.

Our goal is to ensure Latinos have accurate, readily available, and transparent
information about COVID-19, equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, resources,
and services. In addition, we want to make sure their story is heard and that
they have the tools to overcome digital exclusion, a new social determinant of
health, to remain aware and engaged. Our virtual town halls are where we
celebrate our victories and envision ways to address the root causes that led to
the disproportionate health and economic impact of COVID-19 in our Latinx
communities.

We invite everyone from concerned individuals and their families to leaders of
organizations to join us to help change the narrative and reconfigure the
American landscape into one that is anti-racist and values social justice and
health equity for all.

Background

A recent study by Change Research on behalf of the Latino Anti-Disinformation
Lab, found that almost 4 in 10 Latino/a respondents report having seen material
or information that makes them think the COVID-19 vaccines are not safe or
effective. In addition, 6 in 10 Latino/as know someone in their household or
community who is unwilling to take the vaccine because they believe it will be
harmful to them.

Among Latinos who have not been vaccinated, the majority say they do not plan on
getting a COVID-19 vaccine or are hesitant to get one because they believe it is
not safe (51%) – this number rises to 67% among Spanish-dominant speakers.
Latinas (48%) are less hesitant to take the vaccine than Latino men (54%);
however more than one-third (34%) of women are more likely to only accept a
specific vaccine versus only 25% of men.

Of those respondents who are unsure about getting vaccinated, Latinos under the
age of 50 (78%) and that speak Spanish as their primary language at home (49%)
are among the most hesitant to get the vaccine.

Nearly 40% of Latinx respondents say they have seen material or information that
makes them think the COVID-19 vaccine is not safe or effective. Another 20% say
they have directly received wrong or harmful information about the vaccine,
primarily on Facebook (53%) and messaging apps (43%), such as SMS, WhatsApp,
WeChat, Telegram, etc.

How To Counteract The Anti-Vaccine Movement
With little or no evidence-based information to back up claims of vaccine
danger, anti-vaccine activists have relied on the power of storytelling to
infect an entire generation with fear of and doubt about vaccines.

The tools used by the medical and public health communities to counteract the
anti-vaccine movement include statistics, research, and other evidence-based
information, often delivered verbally or in the form of the CDC's Vaccine
Information Statements.

This approach may not be effective enough on its own to convince that vaccines
are safe, effective, and crucial to their children's health. Utilizing some of
the storytelling strategies used by the anti-vaccine movement, in addition to
evidence-based vaccine information, could potentially offer providers, public
health officials, and pro-vaccine parents an opportunity to mount a much
stronger defense against anti-vaccine messaging.

Advancing Innovation To Eliminate Health Disparities w/ Dr. Eliseo Pérez-Stable,
Director of NIMHD

Join The Latino Coalition Against COVID-19 & SaludConTech along with our
coalition partners to celebrate past victories and discuss the challenges that
lie ahead. The Latino Coalition Against COVID-19 virtual town hall series.
"Building Health Equity & Vaccine Confidence In Latinx Communities"

Advancing Innovation To Eliminate Health Disparities

Digital health innovations have been rapidly implemented and scaled to provide
solutions to health delivery challenges posed by the coronavirus disease
(COVID-19) pandemic. This has provided people with ongoing access to vital
health services while minimizing their potential exposure to infection and
allowing them to maintain social distancing. However, these solutions may have
unintended consequences for health equity in minority communities.
Poverty, lack of access to digital health, poor engagement with digital health
for Black and Latinx communities, and barriers to digital health literacy are
some factors that can contribute to poor health outcomes. However, there are
growing incentives and interest in making digital health interventions part of
the solution to reduce health disparities. Now is the time for innovative
strategies and bold action that leverage technology to effectively connect
vulnerable patients to health information, health promotion, and healthcare
services in ways that are scalable and sustainable. Collectively, we have the
technology, financial resources, and human capital to make significant
improvements in the health of the world’s residents, particularly the most
vulnerable among us.
Join us as we discuss the role of transformative research and examples of health
innovation that address health disparities and advance health equity for all.

In the United States we have three vaccines, there are two that use practically
the same technology, which is what Pfizer and Moderna. Pfizer and Moderna, use
something called messenger RNA. Messenger RNA, gives instruction to our own
cells to be able to recreate the antibodies and thus be able to defend our body
and create a long-term memory so that the moment someone is exposed to the
virus, these laser missiles, which are precisely the antibodies, stick to COVID
19 and our body can destroy it. And the other is that of Johnson Johnson and
uses a virus called adenovirus and we basically disguise like COVID so that our
body can neutralize it, learn and see it, so that in that way it can create
antibodies.

None of the three vaccines that we have in the United States, as I mentioned,
have COVID 19 in them, they do not have the virus. So we should feel confident
that when we give people any of the three vaccines, we are not giving them the
virus to make us sick. Not at all, rather, we are giving to our body the tool it
can use to can learn.

Vaccine distribution lags behind for communities of color – Racial data needed
to correct problem.
2/18/2021
Dr. Daniel Turner-Lloveras, Latino Coalition Against COVID-19; Adam Carbullido,
Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Association of Asian Pacific Community
Health Organizations; Virginia Hendrick, Executive Director of the California
Consortium for Urban Indian Health; Dr. David M. Carlisle, President and CEO of
Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science spoke on Ethnic Media
Services briefing.

Some 55% of COVID-19 fatalities in California are Latino while African-Americans
in New York have the highest rates of hospitalization for coronavirus. Yet
neither state was reporting racial data about who receives vaccines, until
Friday, when California published its report.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) vaccine monitor, only 23 states
in the country share vaccination data by race and ethnicity, and the persistent
pattern is that Black and Hispanic people have been vaccinated at very low rates
in proportion to infections and deaths from the virus.

“This needs to be immediately corrected,” said Dr. Daniel Turner-Lloveras,
founding member of the Latino Coalition against COVID-19 at an Ethnic Media
Services press briefing on Feb. 12. “If we are unable to measure and quantify
the disparity, it is very difficult to find a solution (to the pandemic).”

When you hear RNA messenger, you get that weird vibe that it's very close to
DNA. The good news is that the RNA messenger do not change who you are, your
DNA. DNA is practically the main instructions of your entire body. The RNA
messenger is just practically the instructions on the—for your, for your cells
to create that, that immunity, but do not, they do not change you at all with
anything. And that's something that it needs to be very clear.
