And Just Like That… PTON Earnings

Peloton is reportedly planning to pause production right before releasing 22Q2
earnings on Feb. 8. But, what does that mean for the at-home fitness industry
giant?

Monthly Visits to onepeloton.com

There’s a lot of speculation, but pre-pandemic, onepeloton.com saw steady
traffic with peaks during traditional time frames. As New Year’s revelers looked
to uphold resolutions, Jan. ‘19 registered 2.34M web visits, and Jan. ‘20 had
3.9M. When the pandemic hit and gyms closed, Peloton had the solution. Web
traffic rose steadily, hitting its peak in Jan. ‘21 with 9.6M visits. Since
then, visits mostly trended down aside from Nov. and Dec. ‘21 – the height of
the holiday shopping season.

What else does the data reveal about Peloton’s payment trends?

It’s… Earnings Season

It’s rabbit season. It’s duck season. No, it’s earnings season, and it’s a busy
time of year. Web traffic is a powerful indicator of how consumers are engaging
with companies reporting earnings, specifically page visits and visit duration.
Here are the highlights:

UAA (Feb. 11)
It’s tough to compete with sports giants like Nike or Adidas, but Under Armour
remains a stalwart in the industry, especially by maintaining sponsorship deals
with names like Tom Brady and Stephen Curry.

Two interesting web traffic stats between UAA and its competitors are page views
and visit duration. Its page views mostly tracked higher than its competitors
throughout the year, including Nike, hitting peaks of a 5.8 page average in
January and 6.3 in November.

Page Visits and Visit Duration

While UAA is running behind its competitors in web visit duration, it’s
interesting to see it trend up throughout the year with customers staying on the
site longer where Nike, while consistent, trends down.

Twitter (Feb. 10)

We gave you a glimpse into Twitter’s business site performance last week, but
here’s a deeper look into how ads.twitter.com is performing, a key indicator of
revenue.

Twitter’s ad game is strong but didn't see much growth in web traffic throughout
the year, especially compared to TikTok, which took social media by storm.
Visits to ads.twitter.com saw just ~3% growth Dec. 2021 YoY, while visits to
ads.tiktok.com increased ~150% for the same period. In Jan. ‘21, the average
time spent on Twitter’s business site was just over 5 minutes, where it was
almost 12 minutes on ads.tiktok.com.

Toward the middle of 2021, TikTok surpassed Twitter in page views averaging
almost 2 full pages more per visit.

GameStop and Robinhood…
1 Year Later

No one will soon forget when the subreddit r/wallstreetbets users drove up the
stock price of GameStop, causing hedge fund short sellers to lose more than $1B
in a day in Jan. ‘21. We thought it would be fun to take a look at GameStop a
year later (and ahead of earnings set for March 9).

For 2021, GameStop only ranked 36 in its industry, with its competitors being
large box stores with both brick and mortar locations and a large online
presence, such as Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. With 345.5M web visits last
year, interestingly, it wasn’t that fateful January that brought the highest
volume of visitors. The holiday season drove the most visits, with 45.8M in
November and 38.4M in December.

Aside from the traffic peaks, the website maintained a steady flow of traffic
that continually stayed above 20M visits per month. These visits generated an
average of just under 3 pages and less than 3 minutes per visit on the mobile
site. For desktop devices, visits averaged between 6 to 7 pages and a range of
4.5 to 5.5 minutes.

Where is Robinhood one year later? It posted a $423M net loss because its 4Q
costs rose 162%. And, aside from its peak web traffic in Jan. ‘21 due to the
infamous GameStop stock debacle, web visits steadily declined the remainder of
the year. But, compared to the previous year, you can see that Robinhood was
tracking back to its standard web traffic pattern before the GameStop related
spike.

While GameStop has consistently under performed over the years, it continues to
work toward narrowing the gap with competitors by growing its online presence.

GameStop was the company to gain some ground after Jan. ‘21. How’s it faring so
far this year?
