DEAR SOCCER...

A RETIRED PLAYERS THANK YOU TO THE BEAUTIFUL GAME.

Andrew Larsen

Andrew Larsen
The 2022 World Cup begins Nov 20 and we are highlighting stories about the
beautiful game.

Like most boys and men, I have been playing sports since I could walk, and also
like most boys I started playing YMCA soccer at a very young age. I've worked my
through all the various levels starting with the days of herd ball and making my
way through club, high school, and collegiate soccer.

Now, I sit in my living room this summer, no longer playing the game for true
competition and watching the Euro's and Copa America tournaments. I want to
write a thank you to the beautiful game that we call soccer also known as the
real football.

Dear Soccer,

Thank you. Thank you for the countless hours of practice and sweat. Even though
we all hated running suicides, Liverpools, or timed two miles. You are the
reason that I'm still in a half-decent shape. Every ounce of sweat was worth it.
Thank you.

Thank you for the hours of lost sleep. Whether it was getting up at 6 AM to
travel to a tournament or traveling in some dinky school van and getting home at
1 AM from a long trip away. Playing FIFA with your mates all night long. Not
sleeping because you're nervous about tomorrow's championship game. Thank you.

Thank you for the life lessons. Finding the ability to push through adversity
and run one more sprint, make the last ditch slide tackle, score in the 90th, or
make a game changing save. Learning to be organized. Finding a way to balance
school, home, girls, fun, and most importantly soccer. I can thank you for
teaching me these skills.

Thank you for always being there. No matter what time of year there was always
soccer. From club seasons in fall or spring. To indoor soccer in the winter.
Practices never stopped and playing was always fun. If I was sad I could go play
soccer and feel better. If I wanted to hang with my friends we'd grab a ball and
go play. I can thank you for always making me happy.

Thank you for introducing me to a second family. My brothers. No matter what
team I was on or how old I was we were all brothers. Grinding through the aches,
the pains, the victories, and the losses. In college this was very true. My
freshmen year we were the tightest family of them all. We all loved each other
and had each other's backs. These guys were my brothers and do this day I can
call any of them and they would be there for me. So thank you for my family away
from family.

Most importantly, thank you for the memories. All the victories and all the
loses. All the practices where it was freezing cold or hot as hell. Whether it
was raining or snowing. I remember all the traveling we did. The inside jokes,
the parties, the celebrations. Too many memories to count. Scoring last second
goals to win the game, winning a tournament on penalties, exploring cities we
traveled too, the long bus rides. So many memories. Thank you for that.

Sincerely,

A retired player of the beautiful game.

WEIGHT ON MY SHOULDER

AFTER FOUR YEARS OF WEIGHT ON MY SHOULDERS, IT FEELS GOOD TO SPEAK OUT.

Hannah Cason

High school; the best four years of your life, at least that's what it's
supposed to be. High school morphs us into the person that we want to be.
Walking into my freshman year, I was ready to start the new school year. These
next four years will help me figure out who I want to become. Of course, I was
nervous to the point where I was shaking and felt like the world was moving at
100 mph. But, my nerves got the best of me, and I was out of school for the
first week. I was terrified to walk in the crowded hallways and have hundreds of
other students near me. By the second week of school, I had an orange paper in
my binder that allowed me to leave class early. By the end of the first month of
school, I finally could walk in the hallway without anything triggering my
anxiety. But then, my world stopped.

I was sitting at home, about to start my homework and I got a call from my mom,
"Hannah, your grandma isn't doing well". I remember lying in my bed, staring at
the ceiling thinking of the memories that we have shared. She's been in and out
of the hospital for years now. Knowing that I had little time left with her, I
decided to go see her. It was a Tuesday, around six-o-clock, very cloudy, no
rays from the sun were popping through the clouds. We pulled up to the nursing
home, put the code into the door, and walked in. I remember a long dark hallway
with machines everywhere, then we turned right and we were at her door. The room
was dark; the only light coming from the television and my cousin's phone
screen.

The room was filled with whispers, asking how she has been doing, did she wake
up, or if there is anything we need to know. Then I looked to my right. There
she was, lying in her bed in a peaceful sleep. Just by looking at my grandma I
could tell that she wasn't doing well. She was in a coma; her mouth was open and
her head leaning to the right. She's been in a coma for a couple of weeks now
and everyone knew that she wasn't waking up anytime soon. She was so pale and
lost a lot of weight. She looked so different to the point that I could not
recognize my grandma.

Throughout the visit, my cousin would make phone calls to update. Sometimes
people would ask to talk to my grandma over the phone. There was a study going
around seeing if you could hear the people around you while you are in a coma. I
know it sounds crazy, but; when the phone was up to her ear, her breathing could
get heavier. When I would talk to her, I could see that she would start
breathing faster. That's how I knew that she could hear me and everyone around
her. With cold tears dropping from my eyes made my cheeks sting, I had everyone
around me and I remember thinking, "Whenever you are ready granny, I love you."
Then we left.

We got in the car and went to get my little sister to go out for dinner.
Everyone had long faces; no one wanted to be there. All we wanted to do was to
go home and just be alone. Next thing you know we were home and the sun fell.

It was the next day and the sky was gloomy, no sun to be seen. By the time I got
home, I felt something heavy on my shoulders and I knew something was wrong.
Finally around five-o-clock my mom finally walked into the door from work and
got changed for her volleyball game. She pulled my sister and me into the living
room, all lights were off and the window was open letting a breeze in. "Your
grandma passed away in her sleep last night," Mom said. My jaw dropped and my
eyes were burning to fight the urge to let tears run down my face. I looked at
my sister and she was speechless. Of course, we all took a moment to let
everything sink in. We hugged and cried for what felt like hours. Then it was
time for my mom leave with her friend to go out for the night. For the rest of
the night, I was locked into my room, not wanting to have any human contact. I
still felt the weight on my shoulders like something or someone was still there.
It remained for days.

Days passed like a blur and it was the day of her funeral. I didn't want to get
out of bed, but I had to be strong for not only myself but my little sister. I
was fourteen and my sister was eleven when my grandma passed. It was hard for
her to process what was happening, so I had to fake it until I made it. I wore
my strapless black and white dress with my hair straightened. After my hair was
done, I got my flats and we left the house. It was a nice sunny day, only a
couple of clouds in the sky. Once we got to the funeral home, the parking lot
was filled with people of all ages. We got out of the car and met my dad at the
door, then walked in.

Walking into the building, I saw my aunt and uncle sitting on the couch right
next to the door. Once again, I felt something on my shoulder and it only got
heavier throughout the service. I walked up to my uncle and asked, "How does she
look?" "She looks like she is in peaceful sleep," he replied, "She is smiling
and has her favorite outfit and glasses on." Then they finally opened the door.
I followed my uncle and aunt into the room and got in line to see her. He was
right. She looked happy like she wasn't in any pain anymore. That was the first
time in years that she looked like she wasn't in pain and that she had nothing
to worry about. All of her jewelry standing out, the blue from her shirt popping
out the little color left in her skin. After saying hello to her, I took my seat
on the front right bench next to the pictures. I examined every picture on the
board and had flashbacks about the times we shared. I couldn't listen to the
music that was being played. I was casting everything out. I am pretty sure I
went through a whole box of tissues during the service. By the time the service
was over, the room was filled with whimpers and when everyone got up the room
went dead silent. It was time to leave and we left for the cemetery.

It was a short drive and by the time we got to her burial site, there was a
heavy breeze and the sun was shining right down on us. She was buried next to
her son and daughter, finally reunited with them. Everyone was around her casket
and was given a pink rose. With tears running down my cheeks, I set the rose on
the top of her casket. As she was going down, a blue butterfly flew around
everyone and once the butterfly flew away, the pressure on my shoulders was
gone. The first thing that came into my mind was that the butterfly represented
her leaving us and going home to heaven. Then two butterflies came, and I
thought that it was her two children that passed before she did.

The weight on my shoulders was gone but I knew that she was still there. Writing
this paper right now, I can feel the weight on my shoulders and how heavy it
felt when she first left. It makes me feel safe and makes me know that she will
always be there for me when I really need someone. I will always have her in my
mind and having her with me now is all I need.

A LOVE LETTER TO FEMALE FRIENDSHIPS

TO QUOTE SEX AND THE CITY, "'MAYBE OUR GIRLFRIENDS ARE OUR SOULMATES AND GUYS
ARE JUST PEOPLE TO HAVE FUN WITH."

Glorie Martinez

This is a response to On losing a best friend to a boyfriend.

As a kid, some of the first stories I was exposed to were Disney movies and
fairytales. My impressionable mind was filled with images of beautiful
princesses, dashing princes, and the all-consuming power of true love.

In those narratives, every relationship besides the bond between two lovers was
secondary—practically meaningless, in the grand scheme of things. Only two
people rode off into the sunset, and we called it a happy ending.

I was a tomboy growing up. I tried to distance myself from these early ideals,
feeling embarrassed at how "girly," and unrealistic they were. Still, even as an
awkward middle-schooler, a part of me longed for that fairytale romance that
would swoop in and bring color to my otherwise mundane life. I wanted to meet
somebody who lit me up. Someone who felt like my missing puzzle piece.

As I got older and went to college, I did meet people who felt like they were
cut from the same cloth. But to my surprise, they were my friends, not my
romantic partners.

There's a richness to the bond between female friends that I've never felt in
any other dynamic. We can share laughs, be a shoulder to cry on in tough times,
and cheer each other on, but it goes further than that. As women, we relate on a
level that no one else can truly understand.

We know what it's like to exist in a world that often feels hostile to us: a
world that tells us we aren't pretty enough, aren't smart enough, aren't tough
enough, can't be taken seriously. We know what it's like to feel in danger and
devalued. We also know how it feels to be treated the opposite way— put on a
pedestal by romantic partners who can't see our true depth, who see us as manic
pixie dream girls rather than complicated human beings in our own rights.

When we connect with each other, we provide a space for each other to be seen.
From doing each other's makeup to listening to angry outbursts and holding each
other through tough breakups, we're here for it all: the good, the bad, and the
ugly.

Being able to witness other women through the ups and downs in their lives and
have them witness mine is the closest thing I've felt to a soul bond. So, to
every woman who's been my friend over the years, whether we still talk or not,
I'd just like to say two things: thank you, and I love you.

THE HURTFUL CHURCH

THE CHURCH IS MADE OF PEOPLE AND PEOPLE CAN ONLY HURT YOU IF YOU LET THEM.

Kate Thompson

Every time the doors opened, I was there. Youth group was my scene every Sunday
and Wednesday. I knew everyone's name and they knew mine. Many people probably
have a similar story. I tried to be nice and tried to do the right thing. I
loved Jesus, and still do and genuinely pursued a relationship with Him.

High school came and went. The friendships, the boys, the teachers, the drama,
the school work, the basketball games, the tears and the laughs. I never
believed that I would continue relationships with people from my high school. I
know people change and people move on. One thing I did think was that the people
from my church would continue to be apart of my life.

After graduation, everyone went their own way. Many to college or technical
schools. Some straight into their career. I decided to take a different path and
move abroad. I signed up and flew to Spain to volunteer for a year. One of the
hardest and best years of my life. I became very lonely during the first few
months of my trip. I remember thinking about all the people who promised to be
praying for me or promised to reach out, and they didn't. Of course I had a few
strong relationships with girls from back home who were always there for me, and
I am VERY thankful.

I was hurt, but it was my fault. I was hurt because I wasn't expecting people to
drop me, but how could they not when they have lives of their own?

When it came time to move back I was SO excited, yet naive again. I expected all
my friends from before I left to be there when I got back. To be excited to see
me.

I remember the first day I was back, walking into church during VBS in which
many of my friends were volunteering. I walked into the main room and one girl
who I grew up with, turned to a few other girls that I had shared many years of
close relationships with, and said, "why is she here? I dont want her here?",
they agreed.

She didn't know I heard her, but again, I was hurt.

Months went on, and I was lonely. My church didn't acknowledge what I had been
through, the things i saw while being abroad, the hard times i suffered through
without their help.

I was hurt. I continued to let myself get hurt over and over again until I
decided to leave.

I started distancing myself and attending another church.

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS

DEPRESSION IS ...

Karen Corrales

The Narrative

If you asked me last year what I loved doing I’d say traveling... but today is
completely different.

Everyone talks about how depression isn’t that serious or to just hang out with
friends so you won’t be that sad, but the truth is depression takes over your
whole body and it’s sortve like you’ve lost control of yourself. To be honest,
writing this and sharing this with you all has already given me anxiety because
most wouldn’t expect this from me, nor family, and in fear that I would be
judge.

I have gone through several traumatic experiences from when I was a young child
to recent months, all in which have affected me tremendously in ways I never
thought could even happen. I always told myself I will never let what has
happened to me be the reason I stay in pain and anger in my heart.

Depression has made me lose interest in absolutely everything that I loved doing
before.

Depression is staying in bed because it’s so difficult to participate in life.

Depression is having too much anxiety to go out and do things.

Depression is believing that my life isn’t worthy anymore.

Depression is wishing I could be as happy as my friends but I feel like I won’t
ever be.

Depression is watching the time go by, literally hour after hour, then it’s 9pm
and you’ve realized the day is gone already.

Depression is ....

DEAR TEXAS...

HSH = HIGH SCHOOL HEARTBREAK.

Daphne Carrillo
13 November

www.youtube.com

Growing up in a small town is weird. You grow up knowing all the same people as
everyone else. You grow up knowing everyone without really knowing that you know
everyone. For me, I lived in my own bubble. I had my circle of friends that
liked what I liked which meant that we all got along because we liked each
other. I remained in my bubble for pretty much all of my elementary and middle
school careers. I continued to live in my bubble until the second semester of my
freshman year was approaching. I remember the day that schedules were handed out
for the next semester. I looked at my schedule and skimmed it as most people do,
when I noticed that the one name everyone said you didn't want on your schedule
was on mine. There it was, staring right back at me. Stufflebean. As a freshman
in high school, you pretty much listen to what everyone else says about the
good, bad, and the ugly. Word on the street was that Stufflebean was the mean PE
teacher because you couldn't just coast through her class if you wanted to pass.
So, little freshman me ran to the guidance office and demanded that my teacher
be switched. And after many failed attempts there was no way I was getting out
of Stuff's class, so on the first day of the second semester of freshman year, I
cried to my big sister, hiked up my red PE shorts and walked onto the Roundhouse
floor, not knowing what to expect.

I can remember looking around and thinking I have no friends in this class. I
already hate PE. Looking around I saw about nine other faces that I knew by
name, most of whom I had never actually talked to. So I thought to myself,
"what's the simplest way to break my leg right now??" Now, let's take a minute
to go back to my opening statement. As I mentioned growing up in a small town
means that you grow up knowing everyone without really knowing them. My first
day of PE class was a true testament to this. Looking around, I could identify
the names of all my classmates, but the one classmate that we'll be discussing I
had never really spoken to before this. For privacy purposes, we'll call him
Texas. I'd seen Texas around before, I'd been playing soccer with and against
him for most of my life. I would later come to find out that Texas knew me as
"kick him in the shins" girl, a phrase that speaks it for itself. All I really
knew about Texas was that he played soccer and was a country boy. That was
pretty much it. Little did I know that I would soon know a LOT more about Texas
than I had ever thought. Flash forward to June 2019. High school is over now and
freshman year Daphne is long gone. As I write this, I'm sitting alone in the
dark of my room, doing what some might call, wallowing in my pity. A lot has
changed since my naive self stepped foot on the Roundhouse floor for PE that
day. For starters, I now know the true feeling of betrayal. I now know what
people mean when they say that you don't finish high school with the same group
of friends, let alone with the same best friend. I now know who my real friends
are and who I want standing next to me when I reach the top. It's funny to me
that I was so naive at one point. So stupid to think that people are honest. And
that when a boy says he loves you, he means it. I was stupid to think that just
because you love someone with your whole heart doesn't mean that they feel the
same way about you. So, you're probably wondering what this has to do with
Texas...

After being in PE class together for a little over two months, Texas and I
started dating. Neither of us was technically allowed to be dating at this age,
so we kept our relationship on the down low. In fact, it was so far on the down
low that we didn't even know if we were really dating. Nonetheless, Texas and I
became best friends quickly. It didn't matter that we didn't like the same
things, we liked each other and that was good enough for us. The next three
years were full of some of my favorite high school memories, like... nights at
the pond, screaming Lizzo at the tops of our lungs in the car while doing stupid
dances, ice cream dates, the occasional kitchen dance, mixed in with more laughs
and smiles than I could ever begin to count. I was in love, and I thought he was
in love with me. It was this person that I had "known" all of my life that I was
now knowing better than I ever thought I would. Three years later and the truth
came out. It wasn't just me. You know the feeling when you've cried so much from
being scared that it starts to feel like you can't breathe...and you kind of
just let it happen because well maybe my time is now...that was me. I can't
really tell you how I functioned. I can't really tell you where I was or what I
spent my time doing because I don't know. But I can tell you that I couldn't
breathe. I couldn't stand to walk around when everyone else's worlds were
perfectly fine and mine was crushed...I imagine my world was similar to what the
apocalypse would look like. Sometimes, even now that everything is okay, I still
can't breathe. Maybe it's because I haven't forgiven fully yet. Maybe it's
because I'm forcing my foot into a glass slipper that doesn't fit. Maybe it's
because I know that I'm setting myself up to be hurt again. I don't know how
long it's going to hurt for, but if it doesn't stop soon not even an inhaler
will be able to save me.

So, Dear Texas...

I thought I finally knew you. But maybe I didn't. Even so, I knew I loved you.

ABUSEMENT PARK

HORROS OF SEAWORLD

Erika
13 November

upload.wikimedia.org

The term amusement park has always been surrounded with positive correlations,
but in the case I will present today, a certain park has had almost nothing but
negatives to be said about it in recent times. SeaWorld has been one of the most
well-known and sought out parks for generations. However, would visitors of the
park still have the same warm glow on their faces and overwhelming joy if they
saw the abuse these sea creatures must endure every day? Would parents even want
to bring their children to a facility that, behind closed doors, tortures and
degrades these animals? When I was young, I always dreamt of going to SeaWorld.
When I eventually went, I fell in love with the park. I remember sitting in the
stand of the Orca show, admiring the huge creature right in front of me. As I
grew up, I learned the true horrors of it, and now am strongly against the
business. While SeaWorld entraps all sorts of sea life, Orca whales are the most
discussed in terms of their inhumane treatment. Orcas are forced to learn how to
perform several hours a day, which is something that the species is not
naturally capable of doing. This puts both Orca whales and their trainers in
extreme danger. It is true that SeaWorld has a successful rehabilitation program
and gives a large sum of their money to sea life conservation, however it is
necessary that a compromise is made that ensures the safety of Orcas as well as
their other sea life, if not the total release of them.

Over the years, there have been multiple signs that SeaWorld is abusing their
Orca whales and depriving them of a satisfactory life. The corporation is known
for kidnapping their Orca whales from their families and natural habitats.
SeaWorld is supposed to be a rehabilitation center where they take in strictly
injured animals and help them heal, however this is not what is happening with
these Orcas. They are being taken against their wills from their families and
forced to live in tanks unfit for their sizes, all for a larger profit. On
average, an orca can swim 140 miles per day. For an Orca in captivity to swim
that distance, it would have to take over 4,280 laps in their tanks.

Despite their popular name "killer whales," there has only proven to be one
attack on a human from a wild Orca whale, and yet trainers of captive whales
continue to die or become injured in some way. This is due to the extreme stress
and anxiety Orcas acquire while being forced to perform and socialize by means
that are not natural to them. The SeaWorld amusement industry is dangerous for
both the Orca and the trainers for this reason.

Living in captivity is simply unhealthy for Orca whales. Their dorsal fins
collapse due to not having enough space to swim around. They break their teeth
from chewing on their tanks' iron bars and concrete because of how stressed and
anxious they are. This may result in painful dental drilling with no anesthesia
provided. Orcas are also highly social animals in the wild that travel in stable
groups, usually with fifteen Orcas total. Typically, the Orcas stay with their
mothers. When in Captivity, they are forced away from them and must live with
other whales that speak totally different languages than them and are not
familiar with at all.

When contemplating this situation, as a business student, the whole concept
appears hypocritical. Businesses, as well as any other person, makes decisions
on how to spend their money based on cost versus benefit analysis. SeaWorld
claims majority of their profit goes towards sea life conservation, yet they are
hurting and putting those same sea creatures in the danger their money is
supposed to be preventing. They spend money capturing, housing, feeding, and
training the Orca whales, but with what real benefit? They cannot truly be
helping the sea life by torturing a portion of it in the process.

I understand that SeaWorld's amusement park is enticing, children after all have
no idea what happens below the surface of their waters. It is important,
however, that the adults who do recognize the discrepancy happening and seek
change. I am not recommending shutting down the business, due to its potential.
I am strongly against the continuation of the Orca shows, for the safety of both
the whales and its trainers. Any animals that are not at their "rehabilitation
center" for the right reasons should be released. If there is no injury, there
is no valid reason to keep the animals in cages or tanks, they deserve freedom
just as much as any other human or species does. If SeaWorld truly wants to
conserve the oceans, then they will understand taking away the sea life that
inhabits them for personal profit is not a solution, it is simply adding to the
environmental crisis. SeaWorld claims their mission is to rehabilitate and
conserve sea life. What I have stated are ways no ensure those policies, not
through the actions they are currently practicing.

SeaWorld has proven to mistreat their Orca whales for the sake of profit. They
are kidnapped from their homes and families, deprived of proper living
environments, poorly taken care of, and end up living less than half their life
span as a result of this. Trainers are in just as much danger, having to deal
with these overly stressed and anxious animals. Besides from this, they are
keeping animals for longer than needed for rehabilitation, all for show. Animals
are meant to live freely, not in a cage or tank.

grades I am extremely hard on myself and always try to push myself to achieve
the best grades I can have. That all changed last semester when I stopped
pushing myself, stopped caring for a class and ultimate failed said class.
Shocker.

I really did try at the beginning of the class and when I started to fall behind
I let myself sink. It was not the brightest decision by any means and I have
never checked out of a class like that. It came back to bite me in the butt when
I saw that F on my transcript and a lower GPA. Once again shocker.

I cried. Cried in the shower, in my bed, to my mom. But I was not crying because
I failed the class, I was crying because of my disappointment in myself. I knew
that I could of tried harder and I chose not to. I was also crying because I
knew my family was disappointed in me. They did not yell or scream because they
knew I was going to be hard enough on myself.

Once the tears dried and I collected myself I came to the conclusion that I only
had myself to blame and I had 100% learned my lesson.

I thought that I had failed as a college student and that I had messed up my
future (a bit dramatic) and screwed up my GPA forever.

That was far from the case.

I am retaking the class with a completely different attitude. I am focusing all
I can into the class knowing that I am able to achieve a passing grade if I put
the effort into it.

I came into college with the notion that I would never fail a class or never
receive a low grade and that is just not the case. Because even in classes I try
my very best in, I still struggle. College is hard. One semester might be the
best thing to ever happen to you, while the next slaps you off that pedestal
real fast. I am not saying college is not enjoyable, but, it defiantly has its
'boohoo' moments.

Bottom line is, failing a class isn't enjoyable or something to be proud off,
well in my case it wasn't. But, it was not the end of the world, and especially
not the end of my college career. I learned from it and now I know I can not
just check out of classes when I fall behind. I have to buckle down and work for
the grade I want and deserve.

If you have ever failed a class, just know the end it not coming and the sun
will still rise the next morning. You will be able to achieve the grade you want
if you ask for the help you need and try your best.
