BLACK SKIN PRIVILEGE AND THE AMERICAN DREAM

DAVID HOROWITZ, JOHN PERAZZO

4.14
171 ratings13 reviews
The term "white skin privilege" was first made popular during the 1960s by the
Weatherman terrorists as they launched their bombing run against "Amerikkka,"
calling on whites to give up the power their skin color gave them and join the
global race war the radicals believed was already in progress. Weatherman was a
fringe group most of whose ideas were rejected by the dominant culture. But
unfortunately their views on race were not. In succeeding decades the idea of
"white skin privilege" became the new default position for racial crusaders and
race hustlers alike who believed that white skin privilege was alive and well in
our society -- not because white Americans were actively racist, but because
they enjoyed the invisible privileges and prerogatives that go along with their
skin color.

In this searing pamphlet on the racial realities of contemporary America, David
Horowitz and John Perazzo show that in fact the most insidious bias in our
culture today is black skin privilege. Black skin privilege means the press will
fail to report an epidemic of race riots targeting whites for beatings, shooting
and other violence in major American cities over the last several years. Black
skin privilege means that whites -- as in the case of the Duke lacrosse players
-- will be presumed guilty of racial crimes when they are clearly innocent and
then never accorded an apology by those who have stigmatized them. Black skin
privilege has created an optical illusion in the liberal culture that white on
black attacks are commonplace events when in fact there are five times as many
black attacks on whites as the reverse. (As Horowitz and Perazzo note, in 2010,
blacks committed more than 25 times the number of acts of interracial violence
than whites did.) Black skin privilege exists in the affirmative action programs
of our system of higher education and in our culture, where a black racist like
Al Sharpton could be regarded by the national media as a civil rights leader and
then hired as a TV anchor by NBC.

This pamphlet gives the statistics and hard numbers the mainstream media
conceal. It also probes the double standards and double talk that has come to
dominate the way America talks when it talks about race.

More Garbage Reading

This is more an essay than a book. It's the latest in my "reading books I'm sure
I'll disagree with" challenge. It's so short and reads more like an introduction
than a book, making it hard to summarize. More or less, it posits that
affirmative action hurts blacks and society by promoting the unqualified. Toward
the end, there's even an argument made that blacks might simply be genetically
inferior.

While I wish that affirmative action was based on poverty (which would halt its
abuse by wealthy minorities and women), the author doesn't quite understand how
capitalism works. For one, it's ignorant to assume that everyone who's benefited
from affirmative action is incompetent, just as it's naive of white people to
think they're all so much more qualified for things they feel they missed out on
because of affirmative action. For two, it's foolish to fail to understand how
having a diverse workforce or student body is good for public relations.

In short, this is a racist argument against affirmative action. It's nothing new
to this genre of bad books. Seeing it read widely is rather depressing.

I just love how people that read the book and have given it rave reviews, gloss
over the fact that there have been affirmative action programs for years that
have predominantly benefitted white people over people of color. Examples: the
Homestead act, the GI bill, the National Housing Act of 1934, etc. Don't believe
it could be true? Research how each of these federal policies impacted Black
people vs white people. Come on! Know you're American history people! It's a
history built off of the disenfranchisement of people of color. Don't deny that
fact.

Outstanding. Every thinking person should read this!

This was extremely well written and drives the point of it's title home using
crisp, clear language. Will be useful in any debate as the pinnacle of using
critical thinking skills.

I would have to say David Horowitz hit the nail on the head. With Affirmative
Action we elevate some people above other creating an unequal power play. This
book describe the problem very well.

Trash

Don't bother. If I could review this "book" giving it a negative I would. Total
ignorance. "Poor white man is now the most discriminated against". Boo hoo.

I would love to read this book, but laying my hands on a copy has proven very
difficult.
Could it be a certain group doesn't want the truth to be told?
I believe that's called censorship or in this case suppression of free speech.

“Black skin privilege guarantees not only exemptions from intellectual and
political standards that others are required to meet but from moral standards as
well.” -Interesting qoute

I've finished the book so I know what is happening. I agree with most things
said.

This reminds me of everyday life, because if you look at life through the Black
privileged view, you can see just how the tables of racism have turned.
