Former Mets ace Noah Syndergaard, a failure with the Los Angeles Dodgers, was
traded Wednesday night to the Cleveland Guardians for shortstop Amed Rosario.
Rosario, a seven-year veteran who will be a free agent after this season, is
hitting .265, with three home runs, 40 RBIs and a below-league-average .675
on-base-plus-slugging percentage. Rosario, 27, has a .273 career batting
average.
The Guardians, who lost to the Yankees in an ALDS last season, were two games
behind the first-place Minnesota Twins in the weak AL Central entering
Wednesday’s games. The first-place Dodgers were 3.5 games up on the San
Francisco Giants in the NL West.
Syndergaard was signed in the offseason to a one-year, $13 million contract, but
posted a 7.16 ERA in 12 starts before going on the injured list in late June.
The Dodgers claimed Syndergaard had a blister, but the club was trying to get
him off the active roster while investigating his possible trade value before he
Aug. 1 deadline.
Syndergaard’s troubles went beyond some nagging physical problems, manager Dave
Roberts said in June, indicating that Syndergaard needed a mental, physical and
spiritual reset after compiling the third-worst ERA in the majors among pitchers
with 50 innings.
“Noah has been going through it all year. It is not from lack of effort or
preparation. It’s just not working,” Roberts said. “There’s things with that
blister. There was a fingernail break tonight. He’s not going to make excuses.
He understands about performance.
“We’re going to sit down with him and try to figure out. Obviously, we can’t
continue at this pace of performance. There might be an opportunity to give him
a reset to get this taken care of.”

Syndergaard, 30, missed all of 2020 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and has
a 4.71 ERA over the past two-plus seasons. The right-hander went 10-10 with a
3.94 ERA last season with the Angels and National League-champion Phillies.
