It was violence. When they spoke to me — when anyone speaks to me — they speak in ghosts. That’s what words are. We don’t see them, but we feel them.” Many of us don’t know what it’s like to be deprived of language, but the main character of ‘Apparitions’ does — which means he’s also deprived of love, knowledge, understanding, and the ability to process what goes on around him, and in people’s minds. With the Deaf teenager having grown up in an extremely abusive and neglectful household, his purview finally broadens when he meets another fellow Deaf teenager, Felix, at the mental institution he’s placed in. Learning Sign Language changes everything for him, and Felix does too. But with Felix’s past, the tool that the nameless teen has acquired to communicate and navigate the world becomes a wrench for Felix to twist and pull to revolve around his own ambitions. ANNIHILATION BY JEFF VANDERMEER – REVIEW February 28, 2024February 28, 2024 Ange2 Comments This is a surreal, weird, and profound epistolary novel told through a fascinating narrative with a heavy emphasis on semiotics. With the mysterious Area X seemingly ‘destabilizing’ whatever is in it, the four scientists find that exploring the abandoned place means exploring their own identity as well. I’ve somehow managed to read 120 books in total, which is way more than my original goal of 50 books. Compared to last year, I read more indie horror books and I’ve found so many awesome hidden gems that I would not have found if it weren’t for the horror communities on Twitter and Instagram. THIS IS HOW YOU LOSE THE TIME WAR BY AMAL EL-MOHTAR AND MAX GLADSTONE – REVIEW December 9, 2023 AngeLeave a comment > “Hunger, Red — to sate a hunger or to stoke it, to feel hunger as a furnace, > to trace its edges like teeth — is this a thing you, singly, know? Have you > ever had a hunger that whetted itself on what you fed it, sharpened so keen > and bright that it might split you open?” Two rival agents, Red (from the Agency) and Blue (from the Garden) strike up a sneaky and dangerous correspondence with each other through letters. At first taunting and humorous, it eventually develops into something more passionate and serious. Despite their warring empires attempting to take hold of the multiverses through time-travelling, Blue and Red continue communicating with each other, each letter more elaborate and heart-rendering than the other, for example, by consuming certain foods or deciphering patterns in nature.
