TSUNAMI RISK MITIGATION AND EARLY WARNING SYSTEMS

The UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Programme tackles tsunami risk by bringing together
governments, warning systems, and coastal communities through coordination of
information and educational activities.

The Tsunami Programme relies on four Intergovernmental Coordination Groups
(ICGs) to coordinate regional tsunami warning and mitigation activities,
including the provision of tsunami information to National Tsunami Warning
Centres (NTWCs).

Similarly, four Tsunami Information Centres (TICs) address regional needs and
support Member States in tsunami capacity-building, development of educational
and preparedness resources, and documentation of past events.

Member States have the sovereign responsibility to assess the available data and
issue tsunami warnings to their at-risk communities.

WHAT IS THE OCEAN DECADE TSUNAMI PROGRAMME?

The Ocean Decade Tsunami Programme (ODTP) is a pioneering initiative by
UNESCO-IOC to strengthen tsunami safety around the world by bringing together
governments, warning systems, and coastal communities through coordination of
information and educational activities.
