Examples include metals, plastics, polymer matrix composites, metal matrix composites, plastics and rubbers. The proper selection of an abrasive blade requires an understanding of the relationship between the abrasive particle, abrasive bonding and the specimen properties. Today's high performance abrasive blades use alumina or silicon carbide abrasives. Alumina is a moderately hard and relatively tough abrasive which makes it ideal for cutting ferrous metals. Silicon carbide is a very hard abrasive which fractures and cleaves very easily. Thus, silicon carbide is a self-sharpening abrasive and is more commonly used for cutting nonferrous metals. The hardness and wear characteristics of the sample determine which resin system is the best-suited for abrasive cutting. In general, the optimum bonding material is one that breaks down at the same rate as the abrasive dulls; thus, exposing new abrasives for the most efficient and effective cutting operation. Shop Abrasive Cutting Cutting / Sectioning PRECISION CUTTING Precision wafer cutting is most commonly accomplished with diamond wafering blades, however for some materials the use of cubic boron nitride (CBN) is the more efficient wafering blade. In addition, optimal wafer cutting is accomplished by maximizing the abrasive concentration and abrasive size, as well as choosing the most appropriate cutting speed and load. The following table provides the recommended parameters for precision wafering sectioning. Precision wafer cutting is used for sectioning very delicate samples or for sectioning a sample to a very precise location. Precision wafering saws typically have micrometers for precise alignment and positioning of the sample, and have variable loading and cutting speed control. Typical precision wafering saws range in speeds from 50-1500 rpm or 300-3000 rpm. Higher speeds saws are required for sectioning very hard materials such as ceramics, heat treated steels and minerals. Shop Precision Cutting Mounting COMPRESSION MOUNTING Compression mounting is a critical process in metallography where metal samples are embedded in a thermosetting or thermoplastic resin within a mold. This method begins with preparing the metal sample through cutting and polishing to achieve a smooth surface. The sample is then placed in a mold with the chosen resin, and compression is applied using a machine to ensure the resin tightly encapsulates the sample. This step is crucial for minimizing voids and securing the sample for subsequent microscopic analysis. Consumables essential for compression mounting include thermosetting resins like epoxy or phenolic, molds or mounting cups, release agents, and compression equipment. These materials are selected based on their ability to provide strong bonds and minimal shrinkage upon curing, ensuring the integrity of the sample during preparation and analysis. Compression mounting not only facilitates the accurate examination of metal microstructures but also enhances the reliability of findings in materials science and metallurgical research. Shop Compression Mounting Grinding / Polishing GRINDING & POLISHING Grinding and polishing in metallography are crucial steps for preparing metal samples for microscopic examination. Grinding involves using abrasive particles to remove material from the sample's surface, gradually smoothing it down to achieve a flat and scratch-free finish. This step helps reveal the true microstructure of the metal. Polishing follows grinding and involves using progressively finer abrasives to further refine the surface, removing any remaining scratches and producing a mirror-like finish that facilitates clear microscopic observation. The consumables commonly used in grinding and polishing include abrasive papers or discs with varying grit sizes, diamond suspensions or pastes for high-precision polishing, lubricants or coolants to prevent overheating and damage to the sample, and polishing pads. These consumables are chosen based on their ability to effectively remove material and achieve the desired surface quality without introducing artifacts that could affect subsequent microscopic analysis. Shop Grinding Polishing VIBRATORY POLISHING Vibratory polishing is a common method in metallography used to achieve a smooth and reflective surface on metal samples. In this process, the prepared metal samples are placed in a vibratory bowl or tub along with abrasive media and a polishing compound. The vibratory action causes the media and compound to move vigorously around the samples, effectively grinding and polishing the surfaces. This action ensures consistent and uniform surface finishing across multiple samples simultaneously. Consumables used in vibratory polishing include CMP (Chemical Mechanical Polishing) such as colloidal silica, polycrystalline alumina, and occasionally additives like rust inhibitors or surfactants. These consumables are carefully chosen based on the type of metal being polished and the desired finish. Vibratory polishing is preferred for its efficiency in processing multiple samples and for producing high-quality surfaces suitable for detailed microscopic analysis. Shop Polishing QUALITY MATTERS.
