WELCOME INDIAN SOCIETY OF AEROSPACE MEDICINE

Aerospace Medicine (also known as Aviation Medicine) is a branch of Preventive
or Occupational Medicine, which deals primarily with the health related issues
of aircrew/ astronauts and also that of the passengers (Civil Aviation). The
specialty strives to treat and prevent conditions to which aircrew are
particularly susceptible. It also applies knowledge of the Human
Factors in aviation and hence plays a vital role in aircraft accident
investigation. Aerospace Medicine is an evolving and challenging field. Keeping
the pace, Aerospace Medicine practitioners endeavour to help humans in adapting
to the unnatural and hostile aerospace environment, to optimise their
performance and to match them with the latest technical capabilities of the
machine.

The Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine (ISAM) is the only Society in the
country which deals with this niche speciality. The Society provides an
opportunity to its members and the aviation industry to have scientific and
evidence based discussions on the various aeromedical aspects of Aviation
industry both civil and military.

The Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM), one of the major functional arms of
the Society, is a premier Institute of the world. It conducts training and
research in the field of Aerospace Medicine apart from carrying out evaluation
of its clientele, the aircrew from both military and civil streams.

The origin of the Society dates back to October 1952, when, the Air Force
Medical Officers stationed in Delhi area formed the “Aero Medical Society”. The
guiding light and architect of the society was Wing Commander Ajit Nath, Deputy
Director Medical Services at Air Headquarters. The first meeting of the Society
was held on 22nd and 23rd January 1954. Since then the Society has been
immensely contributing towards the research and progress of the Speciality.
Eventually, in 1987 keeping in view the growing prowess in space foray, the
society was renamed as "Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine (ISAM)".

It has been the persistent effort of all the Society Members to accomplish the
set goals and attain greater heights by addressing all concerns related to human
including aerospace safety in a scientific and cogent manner.

Over the years, the membership, scope and functions of the Society have
advanced. Currently the Society boasts of large membership base with Members
primarily being Aerospace Medicine Specialists from Indian Air Force, Indian
Army, Indian Navy and the Civil Aviation industry. The members of the Society
also include eminent Scientists from DRDO, doctors both military and civil,
Bio-medical engineers and Pilots both from India and abroad.

Aerospace Medicine being multi-disciplinary, requires integration of not only
the biological sciences viz Physiology, Psychology and Clinical Medicine but
also coherently involves other sciences such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
and Engineering. Towards this, the Society has been establishing symbiotic
relationships with technical Institutes of national repute working in these
specialises fields.

The Society through its relentless efforts over last six decades has contributed
immensely in meeting the needs and aspiration of aircrew. The Society has
achieved excellence in maintain the scientific tempo by promoting conduct of
meaningful scientific research. Contribution made by the Society and its Members
has effectively enhanced the operational effectiveness of aircrew and promoted
aerospace safety.
