MORE FROM THE MIT COMMUNITY
CLIMATE ACTION

All-carbon buildings, climate-resilient crops, and tools to improve prediction
of extreme weather events are just a few of the 27 bold, interdisciplinary
research projects selected as finalists in the first MIT Climate Grand
Challenges competition.

#THISISMIT

Via @mitpics on Instagram: “We know everyone has been waiting to see the
incredible, amazing, dashing, beautiful, handsome, charming, cool young people
who make up the 2025 class council. Well, the wait is over! We are here to bless
your feed with this high quality photograph.”

HISTORY OF MIT

Phyllis A. Wallace, the first woman granted tenure at MIT Sloan, spent her
career fighting against systems that kept, and still keep, marginalized groups
from thriving in the labor market. Her work would change the way discrimination
was studied and quantified.

RESEARCH NEWS

Mechanical engineers have developed a material based on cellulose — nature’s
most abundant polymer — that is tough as bone and hard as aluminum. The material
might pave the way for more sustainable, naturally derived plastics.

ALUMNI IN ACTION

Dark Matter Chocolate, the brainchild of Laboratory for Chocolate Science
founder Ariel Segall ’04, is successfully serving up geeky sweets. “Feeding
people chocolate is a way to connect with them,” says Paul Weaver ’12, one of
four alumni co-owners.

IN THE MEDIA

Susan M. Collins PhD ’84 will become the next president of the Federal Reserve
Bank of Boston, “the first woman of color selected to lead one of the 12
regional Fed branches since the central bank system was created in 1914,” the
Boston Globe reports.
